| 86 /100 107-2 IWASEO-MACHI Great place. A must visit if you are in the area, and even if you aren’t. One of the best brew pubs in Japan. In a beautiful old Japanese warehouse-type building, 130 year old traditional building with a magnificent garden and 20m long tables, each made of one piece of Japanese cedar. Food is Czech / Slovak inspired, with fabulous local sausages, pates, and jerky, homemade kraut and mustard, and Okinawa cheeses. Beer is half brewed here, half at their bigger facility. The lagers are world class. The ales are adventurous, often include local produce, and were all solidly made. 500ml for ¥800 is a steal in Japan. Come here. You will not be disappointed. |
| 66 /100 Takoku Shokusai Oeuf (Bar) 2 CHOME-1 SHINTOMICHO Bar next to Tokayama JR Station (5min), hidden in an alley behind Toyoko Inn Toyama 1 Hotel.
No bottles. Good selection of Japanese (5) and American (1) taps. A bit expensive prices for the high quality beer (starting at 720¥/half pint, 1200¥/pint).
Expensive and strange food menu composed of a mix of Thai, Indian and Spanish recipes. Ordered a 690¥ sausages plate (disapointing. 2 medium size supermarket-like sausages with ketchup and Dijon mustard). The Spanish food part of the menu looked extremely expensive and "not too spanish"
There’s a 300¥ cover charge. |
| 70 /100 Liquor Shop Yoshida (Beer Store) 2 CHOME-11-1 INARI MOTOMACHI, TOYAMA-SHI, TOYAMA-KEN 930-0010 Small liquor shop inside a mall 20min away from Toyama JR Station.
Wide selection of Japanese craft beer (mixed with some commercial ones) with a short but decent selection of foreigner craft beer (Belgian, German and Scottish brands. The selection of American brands is really short but of high quality: Avery, Evil Cousin, AleSmith, Victory, Epic).
No English speaking staff. |
| 44 /100 Albis Toyama (Grocery Store) 930-0003 TOYAMA-KEN, TOYAMA-SHI, SAKURAMACHI, 1 CHOME-1-1 Supermarket next to Toyama JR Station.
Assorted selection of regular and craft Japanese beers. |
| 66 /100 102 HIGASHIIWASEMACHI, TOYAMA, TOYAMA PREFECTURE I added this place because Iwase is a nice looking street in the historic port area of Toyama City and this shop is owned by Masuda Shuzoten a nearby sake brewery who bought and restored this beautiful old Moriake earthen warehouse and built a 13C cellar for sake, wine and a handful of OWA Beers - they had 750ml bottles of the 2015 Yuzu and 2013 Sakura. OWA beers seemed common in Toyama, weird. Anyways, while it isn’t a must visit the atmosphere is great, the cellar impressive as well and the selection of sakes very nice. If you decide to visit the Iwase area in Toyama be sure to pop in. I wonder if you can visit their brewery... |
| 68 /100 Takoku Shokusai Oeuf (Bar) 2 CHOME-1 SHINTOMICHO Location changed from before and I’ve updated the address, right near barbanco but seems a bit more reasonably priced. 2F location all dark wood with seating for 38 at tables and 5 at the bar. International food (Spain/Thai/Indian) paired with domestic craft beer. A nice enough place. |
| 72 /100 Liquor Shop Yoshida (Beer Store) 2 CHOME-11-1 INARI MOTOMACHI, TOYAMA-SHI, TOYAMA-KEN 930-0010 Located in the Apia Mall near Inari-Michi station on the Toyama Chiho line(1 stop - 200 yen) is this small shop specializing in wine and craft beer. An impressive selection of American craft imports(Almanac, Sierra Nevada, etc.), the 750ml OWA Yuzu+Ume lambics I haven’t seen anywhere else in awhile(4000 yen) plus a very solid selection of domestic craft - roughly 100-150 beers in all. Decent enough prices overall. Cash only so hit the ATM. |
| 56 /100 barbanco (Bar) 2 CHOME-5-3 SHINTOMICHO No wifi which is a shame but 8 taps all on. Prices were high(800-850 yen) for halfs but all drafts were imports when I went: Radeberger, Schofferhoffer, Lost Coast, Lompoc, Breakside, OWA, Victory & Brewdog but they had a nice mix of styles. Bilingual menu makes it a cinch to order.
A bit stand offish staff when we went for lunch, not so knowledgeable either - he had to ask the manager? for details on the beer but she knew her stuff.
They seem kind of stingy, no free water, no samples, a bit of a turn off actually. Lunch runs 800 yen for a pretzel sandwich to 1300 yen for chicken rice. It includes a drink (OJ, Grapefruit juice, coffee or a tea syrup soda) and a tiny espresso shot of soup plus a salad. My sandwich was fine and the salads were nice, the chicken was a generous portion but pink while the rice was bland. 300 yen table charge even for lunch if your order alcohol. No wonder we were the only customers here, this place is really Wringing every last penny out of you. However, they’re pretty much the only game in town for craft on tap... To sum up stylish, cool but overpriced. The high price, so-so food and not so welcoming staff hurt the high marks from the great stylish ambiance. It’d be great for pricey import drafts in Toyama but that table charge on top of expensive half-pints means I am unlikely to pop in again this visit. It’s a game it was so promising looking online - style over substance I guess. |
| 92 /100 Takoku Shokusai Oeuf (Bar) 2 CHOME-1 SHINTOMICHO A great find before heading off to the Alps for a week’s walking. There were 30 bottled beers and one tap. They had a selection of Minoh beers (I love their stout) and an interesting selection with about 6 of the 30 from the US. The other room was full with a group and although I didn’t try the food, the dishes looked very tasty!
The bar is family run and I found all the servers very friendly and welcoming. In addition, they have great taste in music and I was listening to Radiohead while drinking Minoh stout...

| 86 /100 Takoku Shokusai Oeuf (Bar) 2 CHOME-1 SHINTOMICHO This was an unexpected find in Toyama while I was at a conference. First off, great owners, and a small but great atmosphere. Food was cheap and great (wide selection of small and large dishes). There is one tap. This time it was the Kinshachi Fruits Draft Lemon, which, yeah. But they change kegs often and have had San Diego IPA’s and exciting things. The bottle selection is nice and reasonably priced. Stone IPA was their only import. |
