“Not the most interesting supermarket for beers, and prices tend to be higher than the others, and they have a small selection which tends to be what everyone else sells. It's not often you'll find anything of genuine interest. They do some of their own label stuff, which is usually a rebadge. They usually have local beers, but so do all the big supermarkets these days. I usually only buy beers from the Co-op if they are reduced.“

“Of the large UK supermarket chains, M&S doesn't have the largest craft beer selection, but it's always worth checking out. They have some own-brand beer (brewed by the great and the good of UK brewing) that ranges from the sub-pedestrian to the genuinely delicious. The rest of their beer range changes with time, but currently there are beers from Amundsen, Bear Republic, SKA and Mikkeller. The prices are surprisingly decent as well, with seemingly endless '4 for 3' promotions and the like. As with most supermarkets, it's a good place to go for the occasional haul rather than as a mainstay, but you'll find some ticks, especially in the larger stores.“

“I enjoy the changing selections over the last few years, the beers they produce, although contract brews, with not much information regarding whether they are a rebrand or not are generally pretty tasty brews. The other beers on sale often from abroad are usually of a good standard too. Well presented, although the cost is usually a little more than other supermarkets, the regular six for five offers good value.“

“Minimal, but clean environment, in other words a soulless place. The choice of beer and cider is pretty good, I would say slightly better than average with some good deals to be had.“

“Ubiquitous grocery retailer all over the place with plenty of largely distributed craft beers available at almost all of them. I've got plenty of decent and not so decent beers from here, you'll probably end up here looking for some munchies and try some of the beers, they're not all bad.“

“Have visited the Cheltenham location occasionally. One of the better looking supermarkets if such a thing can be complimented on - seems a little more upmarket than the others. Selection is probably the best of all the supermarkets at the moment, decent range of craft and traditional, good amount of craft from overseas too. Worth noting they also have a range of their own beers brewed at various UK and Belgian breweries. Pricing can be a little higher than the other supermarkets but generally still quite good, probably cheaper than what you'd pay at any dedicated bottleshop. Overall I'd say M&S are currently the best supermarket for beers in the UK. It won't beat any dedicated bottleshop but will be a good source for anyone looking to get hold of good beers.“

“Supermarket, visited several locations including Cheltenham and Stafford, have used online once. Garish green and beige decor means I can only give it 1 for ambiance, worst look of any supermarket I think. Service is about average for a supermarket, no real complaints but nothing outstanding either. Selection has improved a lot in the past year or so, obviously stocking a large range of lagers and traditional stuff but upping their craft game now, competing on a level near Morrisons and M&S. Nothing to blow your mind but great for people new to craft beer. Value is obviously quite good with it being a supermarket and them typically stocking lower priced stuff, when the craft offerings are on offer there's some good deals to be had. Overall worth checking out if you're fairly new to craft beer, but it is just a supermarket so not much more to be said.“

“Seriously upped their game of late, ten years too late, and now no longer consistently the worst UK supermarket for beer but worthy of mention as a source. Selections currently favouring the northern English, canned and hoppy. Got so excited on my last visit I had to requsition a second trolley. AND THIS IS ONLY FOR BEERS I HAVE NEVER SAMPLED OR SEEN BEFORE. They’ve got plenty of others too. No ambience- it’s a fucking supermarket and as the chaviest of the lot, you’re as likely to get pick pocketed as buy something decent. Service? Got IDd at that stinking hellhole of a megastore in Leicester aged 38, bless the myopic old fools. BONUS POINT. Up there with Booth’s these days and definitely worth a look.“

“Tricky to mark this group of small to medium sized supermarkets as they appear all over the place in various forms. On the beer front the tend to have their own brand beers, currently brewed by Robinsons, national easy to get beers and very occasionally a few locals. I never manage to pick up a load of beers from a visit to a Co-Op but it is possible to get the odd one or two.“

“Visited Birmingham New St station on 20th May 2017. Range in M&S is one of the best for a Supermarket, especially as they have outlets at most major railway stations, a good mix of their own brand plus some other craft cans such as Sierra Nevada, Northern Monk and Anchor. Prices are decent, service is variable but one of the better shops and handily located“

“Got to be number one in the supermarket stakes now that they’ve started to sell more than just their own branded beers.. At least in the larger stores near me they have a much better range than the competition, including Waitrose. They may not compete with dedicated bottle shops, but have a whole array of beers you would not usually expect to get at a supermarket. Have got a couple of English County ticks recently (Merseyside and Nothrthumbria). It’s worth noting that those you find in railways stations and so on are a separate franchise so are not going to offer the same range.“

“Not bad at all! I visited Marks & Spencer Foodhall in Aberdeen. Great beer selection for tourists and open seven days a week. I think this store in Aberdeen had more than 200 bottles and cans, among those many from local Scottish breweries. But still, more English ales than Scottish. For me as a Norwegian, it was nice to see two cans from Lervig and two bottles from Nøgne Ø. And, believe me, these are more expensive back home in Norway! The service rating is for well organized beer section.(Visited March 12th 2017)“

“This is for the Stansted Airport convenience store, though I have been to one larger UK store too, but Stansted’s fresher in my mind. Basically, it’s a food store, but has a small fridge packed with their own-brand beers. I guess maybe 40 different ones, and after a 6-month gap, I was up to 6 ticks. That’s why I always stop there when I arrive in Stansted. Of course, we’ll want a sarnie for the train ride to Cambridge, and the selection’s great, and given that we’re captive customers the price isn’t too much of a rip-off. So we’ll be doing the same next time we arrive too.“

A decent supermarket beer choice not the best but also nowhere near the bottom of the league either. I would suggest that the likes of Booths and then perhaps Waitrose would be top choice for most UK folk and then you’ll find M&S occupying the top of the next tier.

I think what is interesting is the variation across the stores. For example three that I’ve been in lately had a huge difference in terms of what they stocked, I would say that the large new’ish’ store near the M40 junction at Banbury has probably the biggest selection I’ve seen in any of their stores with upwards of 100 beers, at the other end of the scale was Shrewsburys town centre store which was pretty poor on choice and Bicester near me which sits somewhere in the middle.

Beer choice can be pretty good with Siren, Thornbridge, Oakham with some of the more traditional breweries such as Shepherd Neame, Adnams etc also jostling for shelf space. Prices are almost always decent and frequently you’ll find some multi buy deal. Just remember most of the beers will have been brewed for M&S so it’s worth checking them out to see whether they are aliases and if you may have already had them from that brewers regular range. Even for a UK rater I pop in to an M&S now and again, it’s a reliable source of decent beers.“

“Always a decent selection of beers, mostly own labels from well known National or Regional British brewers, Continental brewers usually used for Lagers/Pilsners/Wheat beers. Beware of aliases and label changes before buying! Still like the stores, food quality always at the higher end (like their prices).“

“The Coop has shops all over the place and, for general groceries, I like them. The beer range varies according to the size and location of the store. It wouldn’t be my go-to supermarket for beer but it’s always worth a look if you happen to be in there anyway. (Last visited - Littleborough store, 14 May 2015).“

“Due to having their won beers/ciders brewed for them, easily the most interesting of the UK chains for beer. Current (June 2016) breweries offered include SIren, Thornbridge, Wild, Yeastie Boys, Hitachino Nest, Lervig. A more interesting choice than many dedicated beer shops, and pretty reasonably priced.“

“A strange supermarket for food M&S, preferring to sell everything own label which always made beer hard to judge. Now they have widened the range to keep up with craft beer culture and you can normally tell which brewery they came from by applying some common sense. Decent range, most of the brews maybe a bit safe but it’s good. Better now than every supermarket except Booths (maybe I have home town bias there!)“

“Review based on vists to several Asda stores, but most recently the large store at High Wycombe. The cheapest of the "big 4" UK supermarkets and it shows. The beer selection is distinctly average - almost all of the UK choice being the standard pasteurised range from the big regionals. The service is generally abyssmal and moronic, although you do occassionally strike it lucky and find someone intelligent and friendly (usually they’re students on summer/ weekend jobs). That said, it is significanty cheaper that the rest of the "big 4", and if anyone is new to rating and wants to do the UK "standard" beers cheaply, this is probably your best bet. They regularly have the majority of their beers on cheap multibuy deals (3 UK beers for £5 at the time of writing, including even the stronger 6%+ beers), and have recently introduced a range of £1 beers. Their own-brand range (both in beer and food) is generally decent too. So, yeah, it has its place, but if you’re looking for anything even slightly unusual this is not the place for you.“

“Review based on a couple of random Asda’s, Woking and Stevenage. The latter had an OK range, the former not so hot. Just regional staples such as Marstons, Fullers, Robinsons etc. Pretty low budget supermarket in general so the range tends to be basic british stuff and cheap overseas macros. You sometimes come across a good deal, such as 4 Courage RIS for £5, but compared to the other large supermarkets Asda are firmly bottom of the pile for me. There will of course be some stores, larger ones, that do have better ranges but I’m basing my view on an average store.“

“Coming back from my experience of M & S in Belgium (before they had to close due to major losses), they always seemed like a luxury place, cool to buy a couple of things but too expensive to actually start getting food from there. In London that impression carried through & it counts for the prices of their beers as well. They have a lots of stuff under their own brand, all of them look like label beers, most of it probably not too good and for random mildly interesting tick’s the prices scared me away. I just opted to scroll past as a visitor there is not much to do here beer-wise.“

“As a place to pick up beers you could do worse than Marks and Spencers. The locations that I visited did not carry too many outside labels. However the house beers represent a wide variety of British styles (and beyond). Contract brewed by some of the better breweries they may not be great but they are one step above mass market swill. If you need to do some shopping and don’t mind paying more for better quality then stop by the beer aisle when doing your weekly grocery shopping. Otherwise there is no reason to go out of your way.“

“Most Marks and Spencer shops with a food section have at least a small stand of their own brand beers alongside the wine shelves. If you’re lucky there may be as many as 40 or 50. The labels say they’re brewed especially for M&S but I think most are rebadges. If the brewer isn’t listed, you may be able to guess where the beer is from; for example, the “Sovereign”, with its picture of two swans on the label, is surely “Windsor Knot” from Windsor and Eton. The quality of the beers I’ve had has been very consistent, as is the case with M&S food. (Last visited 24 June 2013).“
