| 70 /100 Battesford Court (JDW) (Bar) 100 NEWLAND STREET “ We wasn’t really expecting to stop here at 08:20 on a Tuesday morning, but having disembarked at Harwich we hit big traffic issues on the A12 owing to a vehicle fire. We pulled off and was heading for a Sainsbury’s Nr Chelmsford for breakfast but there shone a JDW beckoning us to pull over and pop in for brekkie. The Battesford Courts is a good sized JDW, located in the centre of this pleasant looking little town. Inside it has managed to maintain many original features, lots of old wooden beams and joists, also it likes really tidy no grubbiness to be seen. Lots of patterned brickwork throughout, unsure how much of this is original though. It goes back some way though is typically a little gloomy something that always blights JDWS. Beer choice looked pretty decent, quite a few cask options that I’d not seen before, but then there was a beer festival on. Overall a jolly decent Spoons.“ |
| 74 /100 NEWLAND STREET “This is a Greene King house which advertises a separate cask bar with 14 hand pulls. Plenty of those are Greene King but there are plenty that are not. The 2 beers were in good nick. Pub was busy so they must be doing something right! Worth going in if you’re in the area.“ |

| 60 /100 Battesford Court (JDW) (Bar) 100 NEWLAND STREET “A respectable looking Spoons on Witham High Street. Inside, especially upstairs, the extensive timber framing gives away the age of the building. For a Spoons of this size the number of taps are fairly modest. The collection of characters are the usual Spoons suspects, Old Codgers, Families having a meal and one or two less savoury looking types. Only had the one festival cask beer here, it was fine as was the service. There is a car park three minutes walk away down the High St.“ |
