“Visited on Saturday 19th January 2019 for lunch. Multi roomed country pub with the focus on tradition. The place was pretty busy with most folks eating ... we took a table in the bar area as we had the doges with us. Great choice of cask and gravity dispense ... 15 different beers and ciders (bladder boxes) all told including the 9 beers coming fom no less than 8 different breweries ! I can recall ... Crouch Vale, Rebellion, Pictish, Purple Moose, Oakham and Wye Valley amongst others so a good all round choice with bitters, goldes and a porter. Service was prompt and friendly and the portions were good and the food of a decent quality ... homemade fishcakes (3 of them !) with chips and salad for under a tenner. A proper country boozer and one we'll definately head back to soon. Food is lunchtime only but not on Sundays surprisingly!“

“Very little has changed here since the earlier reviews, in fact the place is beginning to appear slightly past its best, but at least it hasn't been turned in to a country restaurant - the fate of many country pubs these days.“

“Visited here on the 8th leg of the Thames Tipple 28-11-09. This was another one of Fin’s bonus pubs that we visit whilst on the way home. There were ten/eleven cask beers available including, Dark Star Winter Meltdown, Pictish Porter, and Burton Bridge Thomas Sykes Ale amongst the more often seen likes of Hopback Summer Lightning etc; The beers were fine, the place quite busy and the locals were very friendly. I must say as decent as it was I probably prefer the charms of the nearby White Horse at Hedgerley over this. One thing definately to mention about this place, at £1.60 for a half of 10% Thomas Sykes ale at The Royal Standard either the pricing was very wrong here or extremely reasonable.“

“As above. On a recent visit, beers on cask were: Cains Bitter, Hopback Summer Lightning, Hydes Jekyles Gold, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, Adnams Bitter, Burton Bridge XL Mild, Tom Wood Shepherds Delight, Old Speckled Hen, Everards Tiger Bitter & Caledonian Deuchers IPA. Each cask is usually all used up after 3 days or so, so the beer is always in peak condition, and there should be plenty of new beers each time you visit.“
