Saltpeter Wines (Grocery Store)
72 NEW STREET
“Posh wine shop - one of those places where they don't actually seem to intentionally not stock that much. If memory serves, the only had the stock down one wall. The centre of the shop is taken up by a large thick wooden table used for tastings. The uber hipster European dude who was running the shop was sat at the table and used an iPad. Didn't spot a till. Thing may have changed but at one point they were selling beers via an initiative organised by Ipswich's Hopsters bottle ahop. And they only stocked around 20 beers but they were all from respected UK craft breweries. I was hoping for some local ticks, which the one brewery. Although can't really complain about Little Earth Project. If I was local I'd definitely be dropping in. The guy was pretty friendly, explaining how they'd had a Little Earth Project meet the brewer a few days previously.“

“Nice old quayside building but otherwise a standard Adnamd shop. Some beer and then as much wine, spirits and kitchenware. My son was particularly interested in the latter. Kinda intrigued that they get enough business to maintain these shops. I guess Adnams customers are loyal.“

“On the main road west from the station and very walkable. this is a quaint public house building with a fair bit of room inside, but plenty more at the back and beyond its car park. Traditional in style, it's a welcoming Adnams pub selling its own brews and the odd can of its current special. Both keg and cask available.“

MARKET HILL,
“Beyond the Shire Hall - a little further uphill, this old pub building, which has gone through a few modernisations through the years had a car park doubling as outdoor space during my post-covid visit, although a few of the seats were permanent. The inside was not open yet but available to view via a toilet visit. It's pretty much the same on the inside as the out, with some old structural elements upset by modern interior design. They have several local cask options from microbreweries so drink-wise it's certainly better than some other places in the town.“

“Uphill from the Old Mariner, this is an old building in the middle of attractive housing with the road still on the rise. All is level in the building though and it's traditional inside, with tile floors and a cosy enough front room where the bar and its couple of guests on cask exist - both were local too on my visit with some Green King options to complete the selection. It has a lovely atmosphere and a pretty walled garden area at the rear beyond its conservatory, which also has seating in it, and also bridges the gap between the main building and the toilets, which may have once been separated from the bar room at one time.“

“Traditional pub on a curve in a residential street in the upper part of the centre. All is very welcoming inside with the bar against the back wall to the left of its central entrance, seating is either side of this. Three cask with an Exeter Brewery regular the most interesting choice of an otherwise nationally known selection of keg and hand pulls. There's a decent leafy garden area at the back as well as a car park, but if you are coming here by car how you get into the car park is unclear as it's a long terrace street out front.“

“Corner pub closest to both the Harbour and the railway station opposite. I guess the nautical naming of the pub won out of the two options! Traditional in design with an 'L' shaped bar, with its long side eventually allowing access to outdoor seating towards its rear. There's also some tables out front by the main road, in the sun. This place is a Greene King concern with guest casks outnumbering its own, but these proved to be the nationally available St Austell Tribute and Fullers London Pride when I was there. It wasn't the most exciting selection in Woodbridge to say the least. The weather was nice though!“

“Corner pub at the lower end of the commercial street with lovely red tiles to compliment its name. It's traditional in design, welcoming with a central front facing service area with seats around it, with some looking out at the traffic crossing. For those coming by road there is a car park at the rear and a partly covered terrace area between this and building. Cask ales were often seen national on my visit but two craft keg ales were also available.“

“Across from and visible from the train station entrance, this is a light and airy modern looking brewery shop with a mix of ales, wines and spirits, as well as merchandise and food stuffs - all with the Adnams brand. Expect to find their regular brews and current specials.“

“Historic pub, dating back to around 1540. Modest but ok selection of cask ales with a mix of GK and guests. Multi-rooms wrap around a central bar, with drinking areas to the front and left side and a dining room on the other side. Has a lovely suntrap patio garden at the back. Rugby features prominently and gets very busy when the international games are on which does make getting service a challenge. Watch the opening hours as shuts 3-5pm weekdays, also on the pricey. Certainly one to include in any tour of Woodbridge. (#406).“

“This old pub dates back well over 200 years. Has a feature tap room with 4 cask ales served in perfect condition alongside a selection of other mainstream keg beers. Service is good. Prices average. Not a tickers paradise but should be included in a Woodbridge pub crawl for its history and how well the beers are kept.“

“Woodbridge is a lovely town set on the river Deben but lacks a pub with a river view. This place is the closest to it, set between the main thoroughfare and the station/river so is a popular stop for those on a river walk. It's also a really nice old pub and does good food. It's only the beer selection that lets it down really with a couple of common GK beers and obvious guests.“

MARKET HILL,
“One of the oldest, cosiest and best pubs in Woodbridge, and the last to be independent of brewer/pub co. Very welcoming landlord and really nice vibe inside. Offers up to 6 local cask ales and a variety of mostly mainstream keg beers. Famed for their selection of over 100 gins. Very keen prices £3 a pint before 6pm and not much more after. No longer do food.“

“One of the bigger Adnams stores set in a prime location in Woodbridge. As well as selling 20+ Adnams beers and a selection of other beers and ciders, there is a big range of wines and spirits together with a huge array of kitchen supplies. Genuinely nice place to browse though quite expensive, but then that sums up Woodbridge in a nutshell!“

“Situated at the end of The Thoroughfare in Woodbridge (the end less people tend to venture) is this very good pub/restaurant which returned reinvigorated to the Woodbridge scene a couple of years back. Has a reasonable selection of taps with normally around 4 mainstream cask ales and the occasional guest ale, plus selection of lagers and a few craft beers. The food is very good, service is good and welcoming. The pub is an attractive old building with exposed wood, has a large patio garden at rear plus a large car park. Gets very busy Friday/Saturday nights. Not the best beer selection in town but certainly one to visit if in Woodbridge. Update - disappointingly the beer selection is reducing, last couple of visits it's been poor. Still a good food pub though.“

“Good pub this, have enjoyed many visits. Has a decent selection of 4 or 5 changing guest beers complimenting 4 Adnams beers. Very nice old interior with low ceilings, exposed beams and real fires, and for warm days it has easily the best beer garden in the area. Dog and child friendly. Fair prices, good service, food is decent enough but nothing special and a bit overpriced. Bi-annual beer festivals are very good. It’s probably the best all round pub in the town.“
