“What do you get when a great US brewer and his lovely family build a life in a tiny village in the Czech countryside, some 25km south of Plzeň? Well, one of the Czech Republic's least Czech-style, but by all means best craft breweries. Yup, Chris' brewing skills are as good as the name of the brewery is hard to pronounce for a foreigner. The brewery itself is located on the ground floor of the family's house, and there's a bar with a pleasant little wooden patio looking pretty much at his lawn - there's a playground set as well for the kids too (unsure if it's year-round)! 8 beers appear to be regularly on tap, varying from a simple golden ale, through various hop-driven styles to occasional specials that stray out of the mold, and they tend to be good to fantastic. There are some 0.75 bottles to buy occasionally, and, if you order in advance, 1l PET bottles. Food? Seemingly snacks-only. Service? I'm positive the Baerwaldts will treat you well! :D 'Murican spoken. All in all, a great place to get a beer, a fantastic pit stop if you're driving around the area (with a designated driver) - and if you see a Zhůřák beer somewhere, especially if you see the brewery at a festival, make sure you prioritize it, even if "you aren't in CZ for modern styles"! :) How to get here: By car, with a designated driver, take the route towards Nepomuk and Blatná, pass Chocenice and the moment you see the Zhůř sign, turn right on the path, and and very soon you'll be able to see the brewery's yard to your left. No car and/or designated driver? Tough luck. Well, buses 432 and 462 head there from the bus terminal by the Plzeň train station to the "Chocenice, Zhůř" station in the village. Doublecheck brewery FB for working hours first. 462 has a 14:50-15:28 connection (weekends too) and 432 has a 15:35-16:18 connection on weekdays. Your choice. Don't forget to press the stop button! Going back, on Friday, your last bets seem to be 432 at 19:06 and 462 at 20:17. 462 goes back at 17:28 on the weekends - so you don't get to stay long, but enough I reckon. Double-check hours at the station at the other direction when you arrive.“
