“Visited in the morning, first brewery after leaving Bamberg since it opens at 10. We were the first guests, but at first just lurked around since we were not positive it was opened. Some locals came shortly after. Medium sized 2 room classical wooden interior. There is a biergarten in the back. 6 beers on tap, quality was good to very good. Great prices. I'd say definitely worth a stop.“

“Visited November 2019. Much more spacious than Wagner but still fairly cosy. Quite loud but not excessively so. Decent beers on offer at the usual bargain prices. I really liked the ambiance here.“

“Visited in November 2019. Cosy and peaceful in spite of it being full, mostly with pensioners. Quality beer at bargain prices. Not the most exciting place but with plenty of charm.“

“20 minutes from Bamberg by bus 907 / 917. Get off at Merkendorf Kirche. Wagner is right around the corner, but, alas it was closed today. Two great things about Hummel are #1: they have lots of beers on tap. 9 or 10 today. #2: 250ml pours, and no one laughs at you (at least not at your face). You can sit in the beer garden and go through the lineup at your own pace and don’t have to drink half liters of each. For me, that’s great.“

“Decent beers, not on the same level as Hummel though. Felt like the beer garden was a parking lot.“

“This place had the best beer and food on our trip to Bamberg. We even ended up buying a couple of extra cases of beers from their store. They had a wider selection in the store compared to the pub.“

“A quite large biergarten in a small village, yet crowded around noon. Nice beers, nice food, very fast and friendly service.“

“Visited a couple of times with my parents, great cosy traditionel countryside brauhaus. Not far from Bamberg, placed in a smaller village, easy to park close by. Seems very familyrunned, in a nice way. Cosy atmosphere, friendly service, cbeers served in good condition, and food are typical franconian, cheap prices. For sure worth a visit ;-)“

The interior is a bit dull, surely old, but it doesn’t manage to give the good impression of other bars. The service is flexible and allows for multiple samples; although the choice in the end is for the splendid Raucherla; also the number of beers available is not bad. I got a shot of their Bockbier Schnaps, and it’s very good too (sweet, herbal and hopped).“

Old place, old looking, not much charm to me. 5 tap beers and 3 bottles, but Wagner is not the best brewery around.“

“I biked here out of Bamberg. It was the first open brewery I found on a long bike ride. I sat outside at long picnic tables with the children’s play area in the back, making this feel very authentic. Only other locals during lunch on Monday, and the server did not speak any English. It was a relaxing spot to eat in the shade.Low prices for food and beer, which was great. I believe this place had more beers available than any other brewery I went to in Germany.“

“Just around the corner from Brauerei Wagner. The beergarden was rather crowded so we ended up sitting inside. We all had dinner here. Typical Franconian pub grub, which I like! Impressing beer range: 6 beers on draught and 2 bottled beers. This is for me the main reason why I give Hummel higher rating than Wagner. Räucherla Märzen and Kellerbier were my favourites. Also a decent Maibock Hell. (Hell can sometimes be decent....) (Visited April 29th 2012)“

“Our first stop in Merkendorf, a small village with two breweries! The bicycle trip from Bamberg gave us a slightly sore ass and a Wagner beer in the beergarden was what we needed. 3 draught beers on this day. Wagner Weisse was my favourite. Nice place. (Visited April 29th 2012)“

“Nice brewery located not far from Hummel. People living in this "dorf" must be happy. We sat in the garden and all beers we tried were of good quality. Will gladly return.“

“Visited 27.04.2012. Traditional nice Brauereigaststätt with a beer garden in the backyard. Surprisingly many beers on tap to be located in such a small "Dorf". Their smoke beer was good. Food was ok.“

“Visited March 2012. Decent enough place and well worth a visit especially if you’re visiting the Hummel tap just down the road. Cozy room with good service. I had four draught beers and they were good but not up to the standards at Hummel. Beers available in 1/2 and 1/4 litre glasses. Line 917 from Bamberg stops close by.“

“Visited March 2012. One of the best brewery taps I visited. Lots of wood and high ceilings, and a bright and cheery atmosphere. The food looked good, but I’d eaten at Goller. Friendly service. There was a plasma TV in one room, but thankfully it was off. I thought the wooden hanger on the table showing the beers available was a good idea, as at some of the taps I went to it was hard to tell what was on. There were 6 draught beers on. I had 4 of them and all were solid with the Raucherator being my favourite. Would like to go back, spend more time and have a meal. Great place.“

“Interior a bit dark, very traditional in fact, but not really cosy. Food menu is standard for the region and good, beer selection not as big as Hummel, but quality is good. Both are easily reached by bus from Bamberg, lines 917 and 927 combined give you a connection every 1,5 hours during weekday afternoons.“

“Traditional Brauereigaststätte, not too dark interior. Really a locals place, but visitors are welcome. Friendly service, good value food. Very big beer selection, esp. for the area, normally 8-10 beers at the same time, half on tap. All in 0,25 and 0,5 litre available. Good beers. Outside seating at the back.“

“Typical Bavarian brewhouse interior. Nine or so beers available, 4-5 on tap. Tried the kellerbier, rauch and pils and found them acceptable with the rauch perhaps the best, but certainly didn’t get the dirty character my friend Ernest experienced, so either our tastes are vasty different or we had different kegs/batches.“

“Like most other Bavarian brewhouse interiors but more drag and uninviting and dark, I guess I’d say. Beer quality was seriously poor, both the pils and kellerbier were flabby and dull and tasty of dirty phenols. Worth a try perhaps if you’re out for the whole experience and want something to measure the truly great Franconian beers against.“

“Surprisingly disappointing. All three beers (pils, weizenbock, dunkler bock) we tried were very dirty (concrete, DMS, rotten fruit, old socks, etc.) and the place itself had a rather odd retirement home feel to it. Service was friendly and polite (smiles even!). Didn’t try any food. The little wooden hanger at each table with the laminated pics of available beers gave the impression of a trendy American brewpub. Despite the high ratings here, in TAR’s and my opinion, you should skip this place in favor of the far superior Höhn in Memmelsdorf and (of course) the world-class Gänstaller Drei Kronen in Strassgiech.“

“Visited 14/7/2011. I Managed to catch the direct lunchtime 917 bus from Bamberg and had about 1.5 hours in the pub before it went back. It was a hot day and all the customers (and brewery staff) were sat outside in the courtyard. The three beers sampled were good quality, the pork steak with fried potatoes and kraut tasty and the service efficient and friendly. Prices were cheap. Would definitely visit again - a great experience.“

“Was served by the old owner I think. We walked out the back to get me some bottles. Everytime he went to get them he came back 2 minutes later and asked me what I wanted to buy. That happended 3 times :-) The beers are good and the service is friendly. Close to Hummel Brau!“

“Large and local brewpub. There was a big sort of wedding when I visited on a sunday in July. Very friendly waitor who took me to their warehouse and showed me which bottles they had avalaible. I had a beer from tap and walked out with 5 bottles. They brew quality beers!“

“Nice little Gaststätte with 5 beers on tap and an additional 6 bottled beers, selection is probably unsurpassed for a Franconian brewpub. The meals are cheap and excellent, service is attentive and friendly. It’s a half hour walk from Drosendorf (last stop on bus 907 from Bamberg) and definitely worth the little detour.“

“Much less renowned than Hummel but equally good, if not better, in my opinion. When I was there both the ungespundetes and weizen were incredible, and they were equally good in the bottles I got to take away which is unusual for kellerbier. Has an advantage over Hummel for ambience, both in terms of the main bar and beer garden. There was a massive stage set up way out the back when I was there for the church festival. Wonder what it’d be like when full? Didn’t eat.“

“Fairly typical Franconian brewpub style with a relatively broad range of excellent beers. Friendly, relaxed vibe and massive servings of good food for pretty cheap. I asked if I could grab a few bottles to take away and they got the brewer who walked me through the entire brewery to go to a cool room tucked way in the back. Not sure why they didn’t have any in the gaststätte but it was nice of him to let me in the back. Merkendorf is a pretty good place for beer!“

“There should probably be two entries for the brewery and for the keller, they are in different locations. The brewpub is easy to find and has a large enough beer garden that we were almost fooled into thinking it was all in one place. Thankfully the brewpub was closed, because otherwise we might have just hung around there instead of looking for the keller, which is a classic even if very hard for us to find. The whole village was drinking up there--there were very few people on the street because all were at Hummel keller. My only gripe was they served us in an unmarked krug whereas all the locals receive one with the logo. It’s an unnecessary insult to beer travelers who obviously go out of the way to seek out their brew. If they assume a tourist will steal the krug, why not simply ask for a pfand? This has not happened to us anywhere else. Anyway, the beers were out of this friggin world so it made up for it. The rauchbier was excellent, but just avoid the Cowboy Schwartz, that was crap.“

“Not sure I can rate this properly, it was closed for a family function, so I’ll judge it as a beer shop. The owner took us through to the sales area and sold us a bunch of beers for next to nothing. Also got a look into the brewery, the outside area is simple but nice. The beers are all outstanding.“

“Friendly countryside pub, not oversized....Quite nice, smaller beergarden in the backyard with a view to the large - by franconian standards - brewery. O.K., worth a detour, if You are looking for the Hummel-Gasthaus !“

“This place is a real gem in the Franconian countryside. The brewer here is really having fun, and it shows. He had 10 available beers when we visited! This is particularly impressive when you consider the fact that most breweries around these parts are in the 1-4 beers range. Moreover, these beers were all at least decent, but in some cases brilliant. The 5 on tap were all clean and flavorful, the Pils being my favorite. Of the 5 bottled (which I brought back home), the Räucherator (smoked doppelbock) is the definite knockout imho, a truly complex, scrumptious, and never exaggerating lager. The place has your typical Franconian countryside decor, so a small room with long, wooden tables, and a group of old men playing cards. Classic. Check these guys out, they’re only a few kilometers from Bamberg.“

“A very friendly countryside locale, full of regular patrons playing cards. Every beer they offered that day was okay, but all were very approachable to the point of nearing blandness. The Weisse was my favorite simply because it didn’t make me investigate it to find any flavors (and they were well presented as well), but others were simply very timid and lacking in character. The next time I’m in Merkendorf, I will head straight for Brauerei Hümmel, only a few steps away.“
