Wolverine Market (Grocery Store)

“Though a nice clean and worthy place of getting some beers, Ryan’s is just a touch better in amount of bottles. Though I tend to like Walsh’s the best (IMO), this place is worthy to check out when in the area and you can’t find what you’re looking for at Ryan’s or Walsh’s.“

“Really nice clean and easy going atmosphere. Well thought out lay out of the restaurant and bar. Their BBQ was good and paired well with Two Hearted I had. Would go back if I lived closer.“

“Pretty good place, fairly clean with a pretty good size of Michigan cans and bottles. There was some Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin breweries’ beers there. Prices seemed somewhat reasonable.“

“Nothing special but definitely good clean friendly service. Clean store. Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania beers. Jake was their beer guy, good guy used to give me big bear hugs. Oh hell, he’d give anyone big bear hugs. Made ya always want to go this store even if you didn’t buy anything. And that’s what I did sometimes when roaming through the "thumb" of Michigan, just go in and say "hi."“

“One time when I was living in Michigan, I found myself in the "Thumb" trying to find the Coast Guard Cutter that’s in Port Huron (Hollyhock, I think that was the one), anyways, well, found myself in this market and got some Odd Side to take back to the Soo. Ah, good times and a friendly place.“

“Vinny’s Market has a great selection of beers and a very at home atmosphere. Vince is a great guy always willing to share beers with his customers. The selection is great with tons of stuff from Founders and Odd Side. Altogether a great place to talk beer, buy beer, or just hang out.“

“When I visited: Easter Weekend 2013. What I had: Bell’s Consecrator Doppelbock and Short’s Hopstache Ale on draught, Texas-style brisket, pulled pork and chicken, jalapeno mac & cheese, cornbread, a couple sauvignon blancs for the lady. What I liked: laid back and inviting atmosphere, worn-brick-on-wood decor suits the BBQ theme well, lots of space between tables, quick and affable service, small but carefully selected beer menu, phenomenal smokehouse fare, excellent prices. What I disliked: 7 taps, one cask, and a limited bottle list make this more of a beer-friendly restaurant than a top-notch beer bar, but there’s really nothing to dislike about this place. Would I go back? Absolutely. Overall rating: 84“

“I have been a happy customer of Wolverines Market for years. They have a great beer selection, super friendly and knowledgeable staff. They offer some harder to find bombers and 750’s as well. Not to mention a fantastic wine selection. If you are in Port Huron, its definitely worth stopping by.“

“Port Huron’s other store, 4 minutes down the street from Ryan’s. Not the selection that Ryans has but I find the prices can be better at times. All the stock was fairly fresh, and the serice here is extremely helpful (the area where it trumps Ryan’s imho). Hopefully they expand more on their beer offerings - would love to see more MI seasonals.“

“I stopped in here with my girlfriend while doing a cross-border beer run in Port Huron. Quay Street brewpub, Wolverine Market, and Ryan’s Party Store are all within a few minutes of each other, so we made a day trip of it and visited all three places. Ryan’s has roughly four times the selection of Wolverine but you have to watch for beers that are out of code and the prices are slightly higher. As examples, the sixers of Stone Pale Ale were best before last month, several Rogue bottles were produced in 2008 and had layers of dust on them, and various bombers were in the double digits price wise. Hence I focused on the fresh and reasonably priced stuff. Ended up grabbing Sierra Nevada Celebration, Tumbler & Northern Hemisphere, Moylan’s IPA, DIPA & Impy Stout, Southern Tier Heavy Weizen & Mokah Stout, a 750 of Saison Dupont, Victory Hop Devil & Storm King Stout, New Holland The Poet, Avery Collaboration & Czar, Lagunitas Maximus & Little Sumpin’ Ale, North Coast Old Stock Ale & Old Rasputin, and others that I can’t remember. A case and a half of these bottles, several of them bombers, ran me $150 - pretty expensive though not bad considering the caliber of beers. The staff weren’t nearly as friendly as the Wolverine folks but they did give us some empty six packs and a couple 2-4 boxes to carry the beers with. The owner explained to me that they don’t break apart six packs because nobody would want the leftover brews. As a result I wasn’t able to buy a few bottles that I snagged from sixers but I still managed to get a good haul of decently fresh, world class beer. Overall, this store has the largest variety in town and it’s a very convenient border stop for beer-deprived Ontarians. I will be back for many more beer hauls in the future. “

“My girl and I came here while doing a cross-border beer run in Port Huron. Upon entering the store we were greeted by Nate Bakko, the young guy who’s responsible for bringing in all the quality crafts and imports as of late. His dad, Andy, is the wine sommelier for the store and he’s given Nate some freedom to order stuff from Founder’s, Dogfish Head, Avery, Stone, and Bell’s, among many other breweries. The beer selection is tiny but high quality and seemingly fresher than a lot of the stuff that’s available at Ryan’s. I grabbed a Samuel Smith Taddy Porter, DFH Olde School Barley Wine, Avery Maharaja, Founder’s Red Rye, Centennial IPA, Breakfast Stout, Porter, Imperial Stout, and Pale Ale, Great Lakes Nosferatu, and Bell’s Java Stout and Porter. These twelve beers only cost me $35, which is reasonable by Canadian standards. Beyond that, you can break apart six packs (which you can’t do at Ryan’s) and the staff are ridiculously helpful and friendly, as they chatted to us the entire time we were shopping and grabbed us a bunch of empty boxes to put the beers in. Based on our solid experience here I’m convinced that Wolverine is worth checking out before heading to Ryan’s. Nate and staff are doing great things with the beer and they know how to make their customers feel welcomed. I will definitely be back here on future trips.“

“Ryan’s doesn’t look like much when you walk in but the back of the store is a little piece of beer heaven. There is one long shelf and wall of refrigerators crammed with hundreds of different beers. Lots of American craft breweries represented including Stone, Bell’s, Arrogant Bastard, Rogue, and New Holland, supplemented with a decent selection of Belgians (Rochefort, Chimay etc.) and other European brews. A great place to pick up a great beer and close to the bridge for Canadians searching for brews they can’t get at home.“

“Not much for ambiance, the place looks like a divvy convenience store. But the staff is super friendly and went out of their way to make us happy. Brian, the owner, cleared out a shopping cart for us and answered a whole ton of questions and made some pretty good suggestions too. Even through in a few freebies with his expert advice. Call ahead for any requests, he’s more then willing to take custom orders. They have some decent selection, but not great.. that being said, custom order and you’ll get what you want if Brian can get it for ya!“
