“Stopped in on a Thursday evening, large crowd. They had good indoor and outdoor seating areas, lots of space. We had a few snacks, more there for the beers. They were decent, nothing stood out. Seltzer was not good, pass on that. Otherwise, decent atmosphere, so so beers, if in the area, give them a try.“

Loco Patron (Tempe) (Restaurant)
222 S MILL AVE #115
“Visited for dinner on a Friday. Located on Mill St, near ASU. Friday night had loud music and a party crowd starting to build. Featured 5 Loco Patron beers, and a couple of other local beers. Service was great, and my Arizona Amber and shrimp tacos were both great. Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time. I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Space is much bigger than you would expect from outside, and even when you walk in you don't realize that it keeps getting compartmentalized all the way down. Comes off kind of like a college bar that just so happens to make their own beer though. Service has the same vibe, jacked dudes and ditzy girls that don't really know a whole lot about the beer aside from the notes on the menu. Food was hit or miss too, or at least the pizza I had really sucked. There are probably way better places the further you get from Arizona State, or maybe not, Phoenix may just suck that much. They did have a varied selection of styles, as well as a full liquor bar, so you will not be thirsty.“

“Visited on a Thursday evening in February 2019. A rather small bar with friendly locals that was not completely full during the visit. The service was nice as was the selection. A big plus for the bottle shop next door.“

“Visited on a Thursday evening in February 2019. A large and fairly crowded place in downtown Tempe. The patio was quite nice and the service was nice. The beers were ok. Flights available.“

“Visited on a Saturday early evening. Pretty large establishment and it was packed. I did find a single seat at the bar and had a flight of the beers that interested me. The place was a bit too busy to be enjoyable at this time of day on a Saturday. Might be a better time if you go at a different hour. Beer quality was okay, but not outstanding.“

“Visited on a Saturday early evening. There was actually a bouncer outside checking IDs. There were two doors to choose from, and I wasn't sure which was the right one. He directed me to the left, which put me into a darker bar. The beer taps lined the back wall beside some coolers of bottles. It was actually a pretty good selection. I picked up a few AZ ticks and a NM beer. Didn't see an option to do a beer flight. Pricing was good and service was great. I would recommend this place.“

“Visited on a Saturday afternoon. The place was pretty much empty. It has a feel of a dive-y college town bar, which I believe it pretty much is. But I don't particularly mind that. The bartender took a little bit of time to stop by, but once he did everything was great. I had a flight of four, then he gave me a few more samples at no charge. Perhaps the fact that I visited at an off time improved my experience over the past couple reviews. I would go back. No reason to think I wouldn't.“

“Visited on a Friday afternoon. The place was pretty busy at this time. It's in a bit of an industrial type area. Once inside there is a bar with about ten seats. Friendly service. They offer flights of their own beers, but have a bunch of guest taps. All pretty good quality. I finally got to try the La Cumbre IPA here. That was a nice surprise. Overall this is a pretty good spot. I would recommend this place to anybody visiting the Phoenix metro.“

“A liquor store full of bottles and cans. As mentioned here earlier some of the bottles are old, some new. At least I found some fresh local ones in cold. All bottles and cans available as singles. That's a plus. Reasonable prices.“

“Visited around 10 pm on a Thursday night. It has quite the curb appeal with a large outdoor seating area with water spritzers around the seating to keep you cool. Inside is fun as well, with lots of bile themes throughout, as the name might indicate. Huge bar, with parts inside and outside. Very friendly and helpful bartenders working. Good selection of both their own beers, and guest taps. Quality of the beers is mostly very good. Nice variety in styles as well. Highly recommend visiting if you can!“

“In a recent 5-day stay in Tempe we ended up coming back here twice, which is rare for us anywhere. The beers are fine, but unexceptional. Food was very good, though why they insist on calling the very fine pizzas ’flatbreads’ is beyond me (yeast raised dough, shaped by hand stretching, topped, and put in a hot oven. how is that not a pizza?) roast chicken done in the pizza oven also a winner. Place itself is huge and very handsome in a faux-industrial exposed ducting way.“

“This is definitely more of a college campus beer bar than a brewpub. Just a few blocks from ASU stadium and in the middle of the Mill Ave. nightlife district, even during my mid-week 11am visit, the place exuded college bar more than anything. They have more of a decent list of guest taps than beer list of their own. Service was friendly, the one house beer I tried was OK. Hey, if you’re around, and have the capacity after other higher quality stops, drop by. Brewery #798.“

“Located in an industrial mall, within an even large industrial area, this place has an old living room feel to it. Maybe 10 beers on tap, all available for ordering in samples. Their flights of 5 were only $6, a screaming good deal. Their beer quality was mixed -- some infected, some competent, some good. Service was friendly and generous. Not a top tier place in Greater Phoenix, but a fun and chill, slightly out-of-the-way spot.“

“Right next to Taste of Tops, this bottle shop has an extensive selection. Warning: much of the product is very old, so I’d recommend against buying hoppy beers without checking the bottling date first. Prices seem reasonable for the area. Worth a visit.“

“Visited around 11pm on a Friday night and the place was maybe half full. Semi-modern, compact establishment with a great selection of [mostly non-AZ] beers, all displayed nicely on a television screen. Custom flights of 4 available for $8-10 (depending on beer price), which is a great deal for a bar. Very friendly and quick service. The best beer stop for me in Tempe. Highly recommended. And don’t forget to check out the bottle shop next door.“

“Massive establishment right in the downtown of Tempe, but just ever slightly off the beaten path, so it doesn’t have the nauseating college scene vibe that places along the main roads do. Several bars and plenty of seating. About a dozen house beers on tap when I visited, all available in custom flights for a reasonable price. A couple of decent beers, the rest fairly unexciting or slightly off the mark. Friendly service and very comfortable environment. Recommended if you’re staying in the area.“

“Located right in the middle of the University district, we visited -- perhaps foolishly -- on a Friday night. The place is decked out almost like a dance club, with horrendous tunes blasting. They had 5 of their own beers on tap, plus a bunch of guest taps that weren’t particularly interesting. House beers were rather unexciting (a few terrible ones). Prices are reasonable given the area. Wouldn’t recommend going out of your way, but if you’re staying in the area, maybe a visit during a less busy time would be better.“

“What a massive building. It fits right in to downtown Tempe, seems like it should be part of a large corporation and that there is a ton of money behind it. The patio area was very expansive and since it was March and not quite unbearably hot yet, we took advantage of that. The beer list was pretty safe, as I kind of expected, with a barrel aged imperial stout being the most standout. The couple lagers we had were perfectly good though. If you’re down on Mill Avenue this is a great stop.“

“Very large and impressive place, blending an almost overwhelming outside space with gaming areas, neat picnic tables, beach chairs, a massive wooden ceiling structure and a multi-roomed, many bars, different atmosphere interiors. Spectacular, must have cost a fortune and unlike other places, it does not feel overwhelmingly corporate at all. impeccable beers. The German styles were particularly good efforts (Pils, Dortmunder, Marzen). The perfect example of what money can bring to craft beer: expand horizons by attracting new crowds and have them drink perfectly executed brews.“

“Old school brewery bar, very large and spacey with a lot of staff. Surprising location, across the street from residential areas, but seems to have been part of the neighborhood for a while. Fairly crowded on a Thursday afternoon. I’ve not eaten, but was impressed by the large sizes of the plates being delivered all around. Broad tap selection, everything is decent, but nothing particularly memorable was drank here. Atmosphere seems to vary a lot depending on where you’re seated which makes the place suitable for many tastes, but also a bit too large to be very charming. Good spot, cheap prices, but not worth a big detour, especially in the Tempe area with better options.“

“Stopped in for beers on a Friday afternoon drinking outside in the January sun, nice. Really affordable to drink flights during happy hour. I thought their standard beers wwere solid and the special beers they had on, a helles, a dunkel, a schwarzbier, were pretty good and enjoyed a barrel aged cherry porter, nice job.“

“Stopped in on Tuesday afternoon. Pretty dead inside. I asked about flights and was told they only serve flights of their own beers, and since they only had two on tap; no flights. The bartender offered me free tasters, so I leveled with her and told her that i just wanted to try her beers; I was happy to pay and didnt want to stiff her, but I didnt want full pours. She was super nice and insisted on giving me samples, and offered me samples of the guest taps as well. Classy service all the way. Unfortunately, the beers were fairly, well, crappy. Thats really too bad, because i felt well treated enough to want to go back.“

“Mellow mushroom is on the corner of 7th and Mill; basically on the way to Pedal Haus; seemed stupid to NOT stop in. Fairly standard, if spacioius, MM decor, certainly more modern and less hippiesque than most; lot of mushroom stuff all over the place. I actually scoped the place out and headed to the bar where I checked the taplist out. Nothing really stood out as exeptional, but it was certainly a local focused list. Service was pretty attentive. Place was pretty dead on a Tuesday afternoon.“

“Stop number two. I parked a few blocks away at a meter and walked, but it turned out that there was plenty of parking closer in. Cest la vie on that one. Pretty large space off of Mill Avenue. Lots of outdoor and indoor seating, interesting layout, very modern. I took a seat at the bar and was the only one there. Ordered a flight of four served in a custom box that was interesting. The Stone collab Berliner was seriously below par, but otherwise the beers were pretty solid. I would return.“

“This place is your standard liqour store that looks like it is days from going out of business. They have a TON of bottles. Again, a TON of bottles. Some are clearly really old, some are new. Plenty of locals too. Huge selection. If you don’t find something to buy here, then stop whale hunting. This place is fine, but not amazing.“

“Massive corporate sports bar feel to this place in central Tempe. You can order a flight of all their standard beers for a cheap price and their rotating ones for a little more. Service is a bit nonchalant but speedy and superficially friendly. Beer quality is weak for the most part with a couple of standouts.“

“Very large and popular brewery with busy patio on a Friday afternoon. Close to campus. Parking could be difficult. Happy hour deals 2-6 great value. Interesting if limited selection of beers (no guests) but extra points for the effort to include cask. Full view of brewery adds to the authentic brewery ambiance. Seemed to be a regular meeting place for many. Well worth a visit if cruising the Tempe area, though a bit away from the rest of the action.“

“Very large modern brewery set at in the bustling area of Mill Av in Tempe. Friday afternoon custom was already building up and seemed like large bus tours were turning up from time to time to eat (and drink). Clearly a very popular place and well run commercial enterprise. Home brewed beer selection was from across the spectrum though the DIPA wasnt ready to serve. Supplemented by 10 more guests. All beers very good but not premier league exceptional. Certainly worth a visit but for me not a destination pub.“

“A cross between your typical shitty corporate brewpub and your typical shitty corporate college hang out. But it’s close to my hotel, things are cooling off, i’m sitting outside, it’s relatively quiet on a Sunday night, and they have some reasonably interesting beers on the tap list. Sure, the food is about TGI Friday’s level, but whatever. It’s all good.“

“Visited with some local ex-colleagues on a Wednesday night (on reco from theisti). As noted - it’s a huge place, kind of melded outdoor/indoor as is the general rage in the area. Food menu looked promising, tried Curds, Pretzel and Pot Pie. All were average at best (although being from WI, I have a high standard for cheese curds). Beer selection was decent - if a little underwhelming. Every beer was clean and well done to style. The Pils was a standout. In a bustling part of Tempe. I’d visit again, maybe an off night for the chef.“

“Sleek modern place, set back from the road a bit. Very open design; bar on the right opens onto the expansive patio, serving folks directly. Open kitchen too, then lots of restaurant tables with views of the brewhouse. Flights of 4 x 5 ounces were 8 bucks. Foods was delicious. Beers were awesome. As just one example of the stellar service, once the barman noticed me taking notes he brought me a glass of water with no ice and said "that’s from the brewery, reverse osmosis." Awesome place.“

“Good news - this place has a new brewer, Ian, who used to be at Uncle Bear’s. He was kind enough to let me have a taste of his new cranberry dunkelweizen which was very tasty. So there’s hope! Atmosphere is like a college sports bar, but with a nice patio. Food is above average pub fare. Sadly, you can only do flights of their beers, not the guests; fortunately they only had two of their beers available, so I added two guests. This might be less of a problem now with a new brewer, but is still a little weird. Will be exciting to see how this place evolves.“

“Visited for dinner on a Wednesday night. Big modern sprawling place in a new development right in the heart of Tempe. Directly next to the AMC theater. Very pretty indoor / outdoor design with restaurant seating in a large room as you enter, huge bar that has indoor and outdoor seating and a sprawling patio that is a modern biergarten feel to it. 11 house beers, which focus on German and Belgian styles. 15 or so guest drafts also available. Food menu had a lot of options, and my chicken pot pie was quite good. Service is attentive. Overall an ambitious project which was well executed.

76 = ★★★ (Worth the visit, must for locals, and visitors with time)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Visited on a Wednesday evening. Beer selection is haphazardly spread across several aisles and coolers, very cluttered layout. The selection is heavy on imports, and the quality is good. Arizona beers occupy one door of the cooler, and there are some decent finds. Every beer is available as a single, just break the six pack. Nice feature. Taste of Tops is attached, and if you are hitting one you should certainly hit the other.

“Visited on a Wednesday evening. Attached to the liquor store next door (Tops Liquor). Small narrow space, 12 seats at the bar, a couch and a handful of small tables. The crowd mostly students, pretty laid back. 24 beers on draft, nice selection of beers though I was surprised to see 0 AZ beers. Selection had a bunch of Colorado and Utah beers, which seemed odd. Bottles are available as well. Friendly service. Quirky, no frills place, though if I was a local I would keep an eye on their draft list, certainly a place to feature unique beers and one offs.
