74 /100 178 MAIN STREET This is a large brewpub that serves pretty solid Italian food and bar food. Nothing is crazy good, but the food is respectable. The beers are a standard brewpub diverse lineup. They are not mind-blowing but all taste fine. Plenty of space and the inside was kid friendly. Not worth going out of the way for, but makes sense to couple a visit with a meal. Friendly service. |
86 /100 115 UNDERHILL RD. Wonderful bucolic brewery located on the outskirts of Poughkeepsie. On a nice summer day, there are few breweries that I would rather be drinking at. People can hang out on a pretty big part of the property, choosing to be closer or farther from other people. The beer is excellent, and there is enough selection to keep a ticker interested. There are plenty of beers to buy to go as well, along with honey, candles, merch and other provisions. There was a food truck when we were there that served greasy American fare. Only downside is the eggs that I purchased had gone bad... |
100 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Half Time is the best "beer store" that I've ever been to... it's way more than a beer store though, so it needs special attention focused on that. It's beer selection is literally unparalleled, with beers, ciders, meads, and just about anything that you can imagine from countries all over the globe. With Decadent Ales, a fantastically creative brewery right next door, it truly has something for everybody! |
68 /100 178 MAIN STREET Visited in February. Extraordinarily busy, especially given it is quite a large space. We were hoping to get food but there was an hour or more wait for a table, so we did not get food. Presumably the food is good given the business. Beers were decent, flights available, style selection fairly typical 'mainstream' for the area. Ambiance felt like a gastropub rather than brewpub, though I think beers are brewed on site. Decent enough place to visit. |
74 /100 40 CANNON ST STE 1 Visited in February. Fairly standard brewpub feel. Good selection of styles. Flights available. Enjoyable place to visit. |
82 /100 115 UNDERHILL RD. Visited in February. Lovely farm brewery feel, though not that far out of Poughkeepsie (we actually walked back to the train station). Beers are excellent, with a good number of taps and lots of bottles to take home. |
74 /100 40 CANNON ST STE 1 Visited on 9/18/19. Looked for and found the place in a run-down part of Poughkeepsie, after a walk over Hudson River, The place looked fairly new and very clean, with a lounge like atmosphere. The place is quite large, and they have 12 beers on tap, as well as 3-4 cans. No food available. The beers are quite good. Flights available. Worth a visit if you're around. |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Despite it being fifteen minutes to close when I finally arrived the staff were very patient is giving me time to peruse the extremely wide ranging selection. I was hoping to pick up a number of locals quickly and instead had to go from shelf to shelf as they are instead organized by style (though perhaps in my rush I missed something).
Most, if not all, beers can be purchased either as singles, a four / six pack, or a case with the markup for singles not too terrible. Your hardest decision will be choosing which beers NOT to purchase as the selection encompasses everything available. In fact up until then I never even know certain breweries distributed in New York (though the prices in Wisconsin are much cheaper). If you are looking for whales you may be disappointed. For those seeking a chance to easily sample the region and pick up an array of regional / national favorites this certainly merits a detour. I'd definitely visit again if I were ever in the Hudson Valley region. |
80 /100 289 MILL ST Based on the time of day and the need to get food I stopped in en route to the hotel to see what Poughkeepsie's brewing scene had to offer. The outside screams high end gastropub and the interior follows suit. Bustling on a Sunday evening, the service was quick despite not having reservations.
Food is upscale and runs in the ballpark of $20+ per entree. The beers follow suit with a price tag a dollar or two above what you'd see at most other brewpubs. Whether this is a local thing or a regional cost difference I'm not sure. What I do know is that a flight of six was only nominally cheaper than ordering six half pints. That said choosing your six could be tough - the tap list balanced about a dozen choices covering most styles. None were exceptional though only one left me feeling completely indifferent. If you are passing through and want a nicer experience than your average sandwich and fries stop by. As long as you prepare for the sticker shock it merits at least a drop in to try a few local drafts. |
82 /100 202 MAIN STREET I was very happy I gave this place a try after doing a bike ride in the area. They have a good selection of beers, including several local options, and it seems like they know how to take care of their beer. The food is tasty - I liked the taco plate, and a couple of friends had hamburgers with a slice of juicy pork on top(!) If the weather is nice, hang out for a bit in their spacious biergarten. If you want a quiet beer thou you might be better off going elsewhere - this place does have a following and it fills up on Saturday nights. |
94 /100 115 UNDERHILL RD. Updated October 2018:
Stopped by recently and the tasting room is now open, you can still buy the beers and drink them outside on the yard part. Didn't have time to stay long at this visit, so no change to the score, but there is a smallish tasting room on the property now. July 2017 Review: Finally had a chance to go by their new spot this spring, and I really enjoyed it. The couple who own and run this place are just really great folks and super knowledgable about their beer and utilizing the local ingredients. They haven’t opened any buildings to the public at this point, but as long as it is a nice day, that isn’t an issue. Drafts and bottle pours out of basically a stand on the grounds. Bottles and glassware available to go as well. Lots of people with children and dogs hanging out. Evan was playing the guitar occasionally as well. The other kids (goats) were having a good ole time too. Great spot. Excited to see when they get the tasting room setup (hopefully in the fall). |
80 /100 202 MAIN STREET A quick walk up the street from the Poughkeepsie train station, Schatzi’s is likely the best place to grab a beer in Poughkeepsie that isn’t also a brewery. Great tap list of about 20 or so that changes quite regularly. Small bar when you walk in and the front half of the house is definitely a touch cramped. You can walk a bit further back to get to some more seating, and in the warmer months when the back patio is open the seating opens up a bit more. I usually opt for the bar though. Tap list generally has at least one or two good entry level craft beers for getting people in who might not normally be craft drinkers, and then offers the rest of the list as additional depth. There are the occasional tap take-overs as well. Food here is good, with a good amount of German style things, often with a modern touch. Service is knowledgeable and friendly. Flights are available as well. One of my favorites in the area. Worth a visit. |
76 /100 289 MILL ST The other of the two brewpub style places I can walk to in about 20 minutes or so from my house, so like Blue Collar, I still haven’t gotten around to rating it, in spite of going there fairly regularly. This place is certainly more polished, and comes across more as a restaurant that makes their own beer than a brewery that has some food. This is evident in the food menus, the social media that often is pushing food and wines instead of their beers. The beers are pretty solid though, and they’ve now expanded to a separate off site facility to keep up with the beer demand, while leaving the in house system to do more experimental things. Good variety of styles on tap, and all generally done well. Food is good, if not a bit pricey. Often a crowd here, and they’re not always likely to be beer people. Still worth a stop if you’re in Poughkeepsie. |
78 /100 40 COTTAGE ST One of my locals (20 minute walk from my house), so of course I’ve never rated it in the couple years I’ve been going here. A converted old industrial building that goes way back when you walk in. Up a couple stairs and down a long hallway past the brewing equipment on the left and the open kitchen on the right, and you get into the tap room. I believe they’re on a 15 barrel system, and generally have anywhere from 4-6 of their own beers on. One of the owners is usually working the bar, either Randy the brewer, or Kevin his father. Prices are pretty good, and the food here is solid as well. Almost always a few locals at the bar, and varying sports on the multiple TVs above the bar. There’s an upstairs as well, and enough tables in the bar area that they can hold a decent crowd. My preferred brewery to hang out it in the area. Worth a visit. |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD There is lots of beer here. On my visit, I definitely found a lot of new beers for myself, although perhaps not a ton of ’rare’ items. Pretty fair prices. Friendly staff. If you are passing by, you should stop in. |
86 /100 289 MILL ST Came in with family for lunch after some Apple and pumpkin picking. Very classy interior big space and nicely done. Food is fantastic they house make all their own sausages which are delightful. Quite a large selection of their own beers on which are damn tasty. Prices touch high especially for this neighborhood but quality is there. If you find yourself in unfortunate situation of being in Poughkeepsie you should come here for sure. |
76 /100 289 MILL ST Came by for a lunch on a Saturday. Food was pretty tasty, think of it as slightly more interesting and tastier than average bar food. Nice looking place, big, lots of seating. Service was pretty good as well. Had about 10 of their own beers on, which ranged from mediocre all the way through pretty good. Felt like they did a better job with the non-hoppy styles (Cucumber Cream, Citra Kettle Sour, Kolsch, etc.) than the hoppy ones (IPAs and APAs). Worthy stop for sure, and there are a bunch of others you can visit within 15-20 minutes time permitting, which is great. |
72 /100 40 COTTAGE ST First rating of this place. It is one of two brewpubs to open in downtown Poughkeepsie in the last year or so. Craft beer keeps making inroads in the Hudson Valley. Here you walk past the big brew kettles to get to the tap room in the back. When I was there, one of the proprietors was doing the serving, and he was friendly, as were the other patrons. The food was tasty and reasonably priced (thumbs up for the fish tacos), and so was the beer. I plan on visiting again. |
92 /100 115 UNDERHILL RD. The previous review was prior to mine (2014 vs mine from 2015) yet it shows as the new Poughkeepsie location...whereas my review is at their old location of Fishkill that they were at till about September or so 2015 (so Plan Bee is setup twice on RateBeer...for their old and new locations...click on Fishkill for their old location)...Here’s my original review from 2015: "If you don’t already know about Plan Bee Farm Brewery it’s time you did. I would also suggest that many more people will know them in the near future as they expand. They are truly a farm brewery growing all of their own basic beer ingredients...and then only adding other ingredients if grown in NY State. It used to be you could buy their 22oz bottles outside their farm brewery (in Fishkill) on Saturdays, and then at the Beacon farmer’s market on Sundays. They stopped the Saturday farm sales as they got more well known. Now the place to get their amazing beers is just at the farmer’s market for now (no longer...they’ve moved as of fall 2015). However, Evan & Emily have just bought a 25 acre farm in Poughkeepsie and expect to be operating a new 10bbl system there by this fall (2015). A barn will then be turned into a taproom by next spring (looks like later...Fall 2016). Go to their website, Facebook page, and blog. You will find links to some articles already written about what they are doing. As for the beers...their specialty beers usually sell out each Sunday...often their regular beers too. The past two weekends their KaRnL sour ale sold out. So many people came to buy it they had to hand out tickets. This beer was a blended sour ale aged partially in a Hillrock Estate Distillery Double Rye Whiskey barrel on NY tart Montmorency cherries. I am also looking forward to trying their Dandeliason I picked up this weekend. I’ve previously tried and loved their Flower City Ale, and eye-La smoked ale among others. Evan & Emily are doing some really great things with beer. I highly recommend you support them now...and then look forward to their new farm digs coming soon in Poughkeepsie!" |
82 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Very good selection of US beers, and also some hard to get countries for an European like me. Ordered via web.Good communication and the delivery was well packed, fast and effective. Would def use in the future, recommended. |
76 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Big warehouse style store. Huge selection including some relatively hard to find stuff. Staff seemed friendly enough and prices were OK. Mail order available which is a nice touch. Good spot. |
90 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Great selection of American beers some good classy stuff everywhere overseas is just as good prices suited me so well just seeing all those lovely RIS,s was a great feeling had a ball going through each state will return. |
80 /100 115 UNDERHILL RD. Farmhouse brewery consisting of the garage of the brewer’s house, hop farm and bee farm. They are only open for bottle releases, which are advertised on their facebook page, so check that out if you want to get their beer. Don’t just show up here unless it’s a release as the brewery is essentially a garage/farm connected to his house. They also sell beer at a local farmer’s market.
Brewer was very gracious and gave us a tour of the nanobrewery, letting us sample some of his lambic that is barrel aging. Worth a visit if you want to buy their bottles. It’s really only one of a couple of options if you do. |
70 /100 289 MILL ST This plce looks like the beginning of the regentrifciation of downtown Poughkeepsie. Lots of brick in the interior and low ceilings and candles gives this place an intimate vibe. Of course intimate can can also mean small so get their early because it was fairly crowded when I arrived. They had 6 of their own on tap with the Scotch ale and the stout the clear winners as well as gastropub type menu. The food wasn’t cheap but it was certainly tasty and I also enjoyed the hot dog with the pretzel bun. (And by pretzel bun I mean they made a bun out of a pretzel.) If I lived in the area I would also stop by as well. |
86 /100 289 MILL ST I stopped here this past Sunday after visiting the Tuthilltown Distillery. It was a wise choice. This brewpub is recently opened and the building and space are really well done. The decor is simply beautiful...all stone...brick...wood beams...nice lighting...and a gorgeous wraparound bar. There were about 6 beers plus a couple of guest taps (Peekskill & Rushing Duck). I had a couple of flights and tried all of them. I really enjoyed the Mill House beers. They are doing quite well with them for a recent startup. Althtough there is still room for improvement or growth...again...very nice initial effort! I can’t finish the review without mentioning the food though...it was extremely good. They make their own sausages...4 or 5 different kinds...plus a fantastic house made hot dog which I had...wood fired pizzas too. I definitely recommend a visit here. If I lived closer I’d frequent this place often. |
88 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD I live in Poughkeepsie, this my go to bottle shop. As far as the major complaint of being to pricey, I guess they are at the top of the suggested retail price. I think the huge, huge selection makes up for that. If it’s available in New York they get it. I have tried many beers that I would never have been able to try if I didn’t shop here. |
62 /100 Beechtree Grill (Bar) 1 COLLEGEVIEW AVE. Visited: 8-9-11
I came her for dinner while working out in this area on recommedations for other BA users. The atmosphere here is decent, its a nice cozy old building with original exposed architecture and a decent crowd. The quality of their selection is better than your typical place but nothing her makes you say ’WOW, Give Me That’. The service was okay, when the bar area was packed (10 seats), the service was a little slow but as the place cleared out, it never got any better or attentive. I don’t want to be waited on hand and foot but when you have 4 patrons (including me), my glass shouldn’t be empty for a 10 minute stretch. The selecton was average, they have 8 taps, 1 cask tap, and about 20 bottles to chose from...nothing horrible but nothing special either. The food was decent, had a pull pork dinner, which came with a side of diced onions, peppers, in a orange sauce, it was very interesting and blended well with the meat. Overall, a nice place but not a beer nerds hang out...more like a corner bistro. |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Visited: 8-8-11
When I walked into Half Time, I had my sights set pretty high because of all the great reviews it got (from people who visited the store). It advertises itself as the Worlds Largest Selection of Beer..and mind you, I haven’t been around the world to check every beer store but it still doesn’t have the volume that Beers of the World in Rochester has. With that being said, it still has a vast amount of different beers but I was kind of disappointed that it only had one aisle (both side, 5 levels high) of american craft beers. I will say that their distributor tries because they get a lot more of the better brewers than we see from the upstate brewers (Bruery, Cigar City, Founders, Firestone, etc) and there selection was a nice change of pace from the stuff I typically see. Their selection was a 4 out of 5 and some of their prices were good and some were higher. I recommend stopping by when in the area and I will be shopping their website in the future. |
66 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD This place has some of the best selections in the country. Slow delivery and high prices. One has to take the good with the bad. |
54 /100 Babycakes Café (Restaurant) 1-3 COLLEGEVIEW AVE Not sure this place makes much sense on here, but its here, so... They had good food, went for breakfast/brunch. Not much of a beer destination, but a few craft options were available. |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Really great selection for many hard to find beers. Finally landed myself an ale smith speedway stout. Only complaint is a little more really hard to find beers. |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Great selection although their prices are about 10% higher than most stores in the area for the same thing. HUGE store! |
72 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Overall good selection. I’ve ordered a few times through them and just about every time my order was shorted a few of the beers I ordered. They did fix the problem with a refund but I only found out once my order arrived at my house and checked my bank statement. There wasn’t any email about a refund or what they didn’t have enough of in stock. That is my only irritation with this place. There is also the fact that to get free shipping you have to order $100 of beer which is quite a bit of beer at a time. The beer isn’t always fresh I received Sculpin which expired just a few days after I received it. On a brighter note selection, time to receive order and dependability as far as never having a problem at least most of my order this place has been a decent place for a good variety of brews. |
90 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Awesome bottle shop. A little on the pricey side, but great selection. I look forward to visiting my sister up state just so I can stop in for a visit. Last time I stopped in they just happened to be stocking the shelf with some Heady Topper! Talk about luck! Definitely worth checking out if you in the area! |
86 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD I know a few people who have been here before, and having placed an order online, I agree with the good praise I’ve heard. Not all of the stuff is rare, but the selection is so massive... Shipping is reasonable and prices are even better. |
50 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Got to this place 5 minutes before closing. I was only passing through so I could not return. After about 3 minutes the employee started an agressive campaign to usher me and another customer to the register. A bad experience. One good thing is that they had Great Lakes brewery products. Too bad I wasnt given another 10 minutes when I explained I was passing through from Arizona. Employee must have had a hot date. |
84 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Great selection of US Craft Beers which is what I tend to stick with. Anytime I can find beers fom Alaska I’m happy. And they have a selection of Midnight Sun Beers. Make sure you check behind the counter. That is where they keep some of the rarer beers. |
84 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD This place has a really good selection of beers. Pretty much every brand I was thinking would be available here was, in fact, available here. Prices weren’t anything special, but they were fine. There’s not a ton of ambiance, but everything is laid out nicely. If you are anywhere near here, this is a destination-level store. |
90 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD One of the better stores I have visited. A typical large warehouse feel. Selection was top notch with a number of hard to find beers plus a few growlers to choose from. Staff was helpful and threw in some free glasses with my purchase. A must stop if you are in the area and not from NY. |
90 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Wow! What a huge beer selection! Tons of great beer with friendly and helpful staff. Great ambiance, well organized and clean. For the price, it depends of the beers. Some are cheaper than in other store and some are a lot more expensive. Add a vintage/rare section and it would be the perfect store! |
72 /100 Half Time (Beer Store) 2290 SOUTH RD Has the feel of a total wine/ bev mo type beer warehouse. They have a lot of quantity and some good clearance sales. Everything is arranged by nation which makes it easy to find things. But compared to a typical Total wiine they didn’t have much I hadn’t seen before. The German selection was surprisingly basic. They did have a lot of regional craft and the prices, as others have noted, are hit or miss. They also have 12 taps of craft for growler fills. Maybe it’s the aesthetics of the place. It looks like if the Ontario version of the beer store had a showroom. It felt kind of soulless. But if you live in the Hudson Valley I can’t imagine better being available. |
