“Just a short walk up the road from Funk. Was super busy (but they had a bottle release). Found their beers to be surprisingly not bad (but don't know what I was expecting).“

“No dogs allowed, not even outside (Inside the brewery, understandable; outside, makes no sense)... No signs anywhere to know this, so use this as a warning. Bartender was somewhat rude making this point as well. Beer is pretty solid, just not sure how frequently I’ll be going back now.“

“Open tasting room - this worried me when I walked up as it was 90 degrees outside an open = no air conditioning. Plenty of breeze, so the head did not bother me. Friendly helpers more than eager to explain all the beers. 8 beers on tap and a food truck in the parking lot.“

“Ambiance - it’s a beer showroom, not like many other beer distributors, where you walk into a dark and dank big cellar. Pleasing area to buy beer. Service - is knowledgeable, the staff working in the office dealing with Wholesale accounts were very friendly and helpful, really wanted to do business with me. Selection - huge amounts, I think the amount of bottles is inflated, they may have 3000 cases, but not 3000 different cases. Value - overpriced, and that’s not really debatable. Kind of is the nature of the game, when you own all the rites to everything. Honestly, it’s got everything, but when you know from a business standpoint how they do business, it’s not as glamorous. The owners are shrewd and puffy. Not a fan of that. All in all, I love the selection, the showroom, and the staff - I do however have objections of their bully business approach.“

“Would visit when in the area for work. Awesome selection of both micro and imports. The owner is usually too busy to be bothered with any customers. There is one female counter staff who is nice, the other one don't even bother with, must be related to the owner? Nice selection but when I drive all the way from Maryland I expect too be treated better.“

“Keg heaven!!!! Rows and rows, aisles and aisles of kegs! And on top of the vast selection, they are priced very reasonably! The next time I head down, I will be bringing a truck and stocking up on sixtels. Staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient while we looked through their back freezer. Great place.“

“Good, good, good spot. Great selection, welcoming and willing service and awesome prices. PA sucks the fattest one on that ridiculous case only law but if I’m buying cases, I’m buying them here. One example, St. Bernardus Christmas for 99.99 per case, that’s wicked cheap. The value was everywhere in the store and I must say I definitely noticed some old stuff, but if some stouts and barleywines are sitting around a couple years so be it, thanks for aging it for me. Check the dates on all other stuff and I’m sure you’ll leave happy.“

“Two things to address anyone’s concerns about Shangys’. First if you are buying a number of cases, walk in, ask for help and give the employee your list. Simple as that. Second, yes, there is some old stock on the piles, do your due dilligence and check any cases before you pay for them. If you are doubtful about the possible packaging date, do yourself a favor and don’t buy it. Otherwise, any self respecting beer geek should not hate on this place. Do they have everything ever brewed, no. But do they have stuff to make the drive from LI, NY worthwhile and more, you bet! Should they have old stock on their shelves, no, but most places I know in LI are not very dilligent about moving older product to the clearance rack. I found the prices on 95% of the items looked at to be more than reasonable, and some downright cheap. Last Dec I got a case of Black Ops for $223. Insane! This trip was another Bell’s O Rama. Tons of Lost Abbey, Pizza Port, Terrapin, Bell’s, Founders, New Holland, Stone, on and on. Huge craft can selections for those looking to make your golf/camping buddies jealous. Apparently they are working on a website so you can have a better idea as to what they have available.“

“As I enter my ratings for Volpe’s, I find myself puzzled as to why we come here so often. It reminds me of a townie bar more than anything else. The regulars all know each other, and you get an evil glare when you enter for the first time. Selection consists almost entirely of the same old macro-brews. However, everytime I’m in the area, we still stop here for a drink.“

“Pretty small place with nothing but candle light. It was nice but I like to able to see the menu. Just about everything I ordered on the menu they didn’t have. After the 4th attempt to order something I just asked what they do have. Prices are pretty damn high to for there beers but the selection isn’t bad at. I’ll also add that the place has no AC so if you go there on a hot sunny day be ready to sweat your ass off. Wouldn’t be bad with a fan but then the candles would be blown out. Lame“

“Definitely gotta do your homework before you come here because I don’t trust the owner one bit. I have heard many stories from distributors complaining about this guys business practices. Having said all of that this place does have the best selection of beer in Eastern PA. They have tons of hard to find seasonals, imports and micros and they are priced well. The help here is fantastic and they have everything clean and nicely stacked. Most of the beers have a description on them along with the price so that helps a lot.“

“A great distributor with an outstanding selection. Prices are the best in the area and the staff is very helpful. Beer reveiws are also helpful. While I agree with other reviewers that you need to check the expiration dates, I have bought many cases and have never had an issue, although I have heard others complain. The best overall selection by far in Eastern PA!“

“On the plus side, its massive, clean, and had a great selection. If you are buying beers that take age well or domestics with a high turnover its hard to beat. Check the dates of beers that are to consumed young because, due to its size, the turnover is not that great on some of the higher priced offerings. The prices are a somewhat high and the service is terrible (to be generous). Since its PA you have to get cases - but its not their fault. A decent place overall and worth the visit, although certainly not beer heaven.“

“Very large beer store. You walk around with a cart and circle piles of nicely displayed cases. Good selection, as good as I have seen in Pennsylvania. But doesn’t rival in numbers the selection you can find in surrounding states like NJ. Pennsylvania is not the greatest east-cost state to shop for beer but this store does have a very good selection of American and import (mostly Belgian). IMPORTANT NOTE: Me stupid Montrealer didn’t know about stupid PA law. YOU CAN ONLY BUY CASES at this store. I bought a case of Expedition and was on my way. I must say I was mostly impressed by the prices. They only sell by the case but the prices are good.“

“Not much to look at from the outside - kind of resembles a biker bar - but don’t be fooled. Really nice atmosphere on the inside with vaulted ceilings and candlelighting. Really large bar area, limited seating for dining. Attended a Grateful Dead tribute night with a 2-man acoustic band, which was fun but crowded. Food was good, but overpriced. Really nice beer selection. Loved the 3 hand pumps (although I agree with another poster that they were too cold) along with 6 rotating taps. Pretty extensive draft list that was well organized by style. Biggest complaint was the price. Maybe 15% were spot on, the rest seemed to be way over priced! Most of my beer drinking is in Philly and this place seemed very expensive to me.“

“Candlelight surrounds the entire rest/bar. Small place but great atmosphere. Small tap selection and the cask beers were served too cold. Overall great selection of beers available in bottles - some prices too high but understandable due to the rarity of finding those beers around. Food was excellent. Look forward to the next trip out.“

“Dr. Beardface and his bff Fruchter ditched the lousy Jew Webz and took off for Pennsylvania to fulfill the left coaster’s extreme desire for Bell’s beers...they were not disappointed. After trekking up the silly hill to the front door, the bffs were blown away by the massive selection. Their first thought: what the fuck is up with all these random macrobrews? These walls may contain the world’s largest selection of ice beers, but that is no crime because of the presence of the world’s greatest brew: Beer30 Ice! Sadly for those hoping to hear more of this legendary beer, we had bigger fish to fry. After much deliberation upon the Bells beers, it was decided that a variety pack was in order since Fruchter’s roommate Shaun had some Two Hearted back at the homestead. An added bonus was that a case of Siberian Night was also able to be procured, another beer that I had a jack bauer for. Truly an amazing store, and I will sure to visit again on my next trip back east.“

“Selection is great. Staff is terrible. One of the counter girls is usually alright. The other one is annoyed by anyone who wants to purchase beer. One of the owners ,who I unfortunately met today, is a very arrogant and rude man. Two weeks ago I inquired about a possible donation to a charity golf tournament that I am organizing. I never got a call back so today I stopped in to ask again. The owner, who was very annoyed that I was bothering him for 30 seconds, told me that since he had never seen me before then that meant I wasn’t a customer, which meant he wasn’t going to donate. I have been shopping there for years, but will never support the place again. Tanczo’s will be getting all of my business from now on. They might not have as many overpriced imports, but they have a staff that treats customers with respect.“

“Started out great. Good selection of stuff I couldn’t get in Jersey. The service in this place was pretty awful. The girl behind the counter seemed annoyed at my friend’s and mine enthusiasm, and seemed inconvenienced every time we asked for a price on a case that wasn’t marked. We picked up some pretty good stuff, except for one case. The only time an employee threw in their 2 cents was to sell us a case of Pizza Port Hop 15, which he was very adamant about us buying. When we returned to NJ and opened the Hop 15 the whole case was bad. Hugh chunks of protein completely clouded the beer and it tasted awful. Now we have 11 bottles that we can’t give away. Overall not a bad trip, but a trip I may not make again for there are other good places in PA to buy good beer.“

“Stumbled on this place by chance on a tript to Bear Creek Mountain. Walking in, I saw neatly spaced piles of six or so cases of many many beers from all over the US and abroad. About 1/4 of the beers had helpful displays noting price, description and a short review by Shangys. The employees were friendly and helpful. The only problem is that, being Pennsylvania and all, you had to buy everything by the case, even 12 packs, you had to to buy two of. However, the prices were quite reasonable. For example $31/case of bell’s, southern tier or left hand variety cases. I was in a hurry so I didn’t get to check out the store thoroughly, but I was impressed and will definitely stop back if i’m anywhere in the vicinity.“

“Before YEHA Madness a bunch of us met up here to do a little case splitting. Thats the new addiction. Everyone is doing it, we just can’t stop. Wall to wall cases in the massive store. Great selection, they carry everything from Lost Abbey, to Bells, to Southern Tier. They also have a really great glassware section and a room of hot sauces. I actually needed a new glass and had no trouble finding a nice one. They also had some Bells mini kegs and a bunch of Magnums and Jeraboams of Samichlaus and other stuff too. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. The only drawback is its in PA and you must buy the whole case. Thats why there are som many bums hanging out outside to just a little fix and go in on halfzies.“

“Found this gem going from Weyerbacher’s brewery to Victory Brewing Company. Great atmosphere and ambiance, well lit and clean. No one helped us, just looked at us... Anyway, walked out with some cheap beer that we couldn’t find at home in Maryland (Beer 30 Light and Pigseye Pilsner). Don’t like PA’s case law... makes some of the good beer VERY expensive (i.e. Belgian’s, some Imports, etc.) Not the best selection I’ve seen (Beltway Fine Wine and Fine Wine in Maryland), however, clearly had brews I’ve never seen. I wil go back again when I’m in the area.“

“I have been to many beer stores, in fact I search them out on every vacation. I just came back from my 2nd visit (we reside in Dover, DE). This is by far the best beer store that I have ever seen. I grew up in PA, so I am familiar with the case Law, and I have grown acustomed to it. This place had so many beers to choose from, and if you are a fan of the Belgian variety, your are in heaven. The prices are super, and I saw an average of twenty per case less than my regular store. To top it off, I was helped by a gentleman by the name of Nima, who I then found out was the owners son. I was very impressed that he spent so much time discussing beer with me, and did what ever he could to make my choice more challenging (Imean that in a good way). His father even gave me a de Dolle glass for free, which was suprising. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in beer, especially hard to find Belgians. Top notch establishment!“

“Truly impressive place, beautifully organized and just plain huge. It’s a real treat to visit this place from out of state, and I am always thrilled at finding all that Bell’s, Stone, Lost Coast, which I can’t get in Maryland. “Shangy’s Beer Authority needs to keep it real. Its impossible to give selection and service an accurate rating, because they get more beer brands in then they let on to people, and some of these never get shipped out. They pick favorites, and lie to everyone else about what they have in stock. I’m from California orginally, and I am a big fan of beers from my home state, and unfortunately Shangy’s seems to get most of breweries on the up and coming as accounts for distribution in Pennsylvania, only to squash them. Too bad we will never see some of their best accounts from all over the US on tap in SE PA bars. Case in point...Smuttynose IPA, Tupper’s Hop Pocket Keller Pils, and North Coast Acme California IPA. What can be rated accurately is the false atmosphere of the store provided by stacked pyramids of empty cases of beer perfectly level and spaced throughout the store. Shangy’s are untrustworthy and until others learn this and start complaining, don’t expect anything to change.“

“Nice looking place that is well organized, pretty easy to find, with a nice selection - and the prices............whoooa! I walk the aisles kicking myself for dropping 5, 10, $15, or more on cases or singles/six packs of stuff I could have had for much less. Troegs Nugget Nectar for around $33? A case of 12 Stone Russian Imperial Stouts for $46? 12 Pizza port Old Viscositys for $69? Seems wrong that I’ve spent so much at other shops and distributors. I was also really impressed with their selection of Bells, especially 3rd Coast Old ale, Hopslam, Expedition, and less than 2-week old two-hearted - wonderful! *********** Now the negative - service was less than impressive. Got screamed at for trying to figure out what was in a certain un-labeled case (just opened a smidge). Also, unlike most good shops and distributors, they do not hold anything for you - not even for a day. Why bother to drive a long distance when some other guy can just buy the last case of what you wanted? Overall, this place is worth it if you want cases of harder to find stuff that you don’t want to over-pay for.“

The Farmhouse (Restaurant)
1449 CHESTNUT STREET
“Tucked away but not too far from Shangy’s, an excellent looking restaurant in an old farmhouse. Have to go through the restaurant to get to the bar located in the basement. The bar is small and can only hold about 8 people with tables set around the sides and a lounge are set right near the bar. Friendly staff and knowledgable. 5-6 beers on draft including one handpump. Was very pleased to find a 1999 Bigfoot on Draught! Bottle selection is huge and well organized and descriptive. They also have a vintage list with around 100 different bottles named. Anchor OSA going back to the 90’s, Bigfoot going back to the early 90’s, many years of Celebration, Rogue Old Crustacean, Fullers Vintage going back to ’97, very old bottles of Chimay Blue and so on. Not as many lambics and geuze on the vintage list as I would have liked but still a very fine selection. Only downside is the prices on the vintages can be a bit too much, but still it is a bar and where else are you going to get some of those vintages. I didn’t have the food but have heard great things. Worth the stop if in the Lehigh Valley.“

“Large place, well-organized, mostly helpful staff. The selection is very, very good, but they are lacking in a couple areas. Primarily, they don’t stock a bunch of things and claim they don’t because "it’s impossible to get those beers in PA." The people that run Shangy’s are proud and stubborn; they run a good business but refuse to improve upon it. What they keep in stock now will probably be what they stock in the future. Granted, that’s not necessarily bad -- they always have tons of belgians, good selection of 3F bombers, rare Avery, DFH, and TONS of Bell’s. If you want Bell’s, this is the place to go, as they had about 20 or so varieties.“

“I was pleasantly surprised when I spotted the big sign off the road, was given a sample of beer at the entrance and walked into this very clean and friendly store chock full of cases. The layout was a bit confusing but everything seems neatly arranged by bewery and the Belgians are with the Belgians and so on. The staff are very friendly. There are little rating signs for beers the staff enjoy with four star ratings. The prices are very good. For $56 (tax included), I got a S. Tier and North Coast variety case. They have a lot of cases for $26 that I would spend $40 for in the Poconos. I saw Bells, Three Floyds, Avery, Rogue and too many more to name. Its worth the hour drive!“
