66 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Old school brewpub vibe. Beers were of mixed quality. Food was solid brewpub fare. Staff very friendly. Not a beer destination or anything, but good enough for a quick lunch before our train. |
70 /100 425 W FOUNTAIN ST Small brewery. Beers generally pretty solid. Party vibe late on a Saturday night. A fun stop. |
70 /100 432 W FOUNTAIN ST Fairly spacious but very busy brewery, lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Flights available. Beers are pretty reasonable. |
84 /100 Bayberry Beer Hall (Bar) 381 WEST FOUNTAIN STREET Super modern feeling restaurant vibe, lots of light, lots of plants etc. Phenomenal New England beer selection. Flights available. RI selection was lacking on my visit, but I think I managed a beer from every other New England state. Well worth a visit. |
84 /100 40R SPRAGUE ST Largeish space, lots of exposed brick, over two floors. Flights available. Staff very helpful. Beers excellent. Sometimes there is a food truck, otherwise you can bring your own food. Good selection of cans and bottles to go. Excellent brewery. |
68 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST I guess it’s all about expectations, this place opened in the mid 90s and the decor has not been updated since (don’t go if that bothers you). Great pub style food, large portions! Helpful wait staff. I had the RI IPA and I found no faults (brewed to style). I would not hesitate to stop in again. |
10 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST This is barely a beer bar. Limited taps. Go down the street to Rogue Island a real beer bar with a full kitchen. Even the pizza place across the street has better beer at a better price. |
8 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST Very limited taps and even more limited food. I ended up with a pretzel and a Capt.'s Daughter at a higher price than anywhere else in the state. No thanks. |
68 /100 36 EXCHANGE TERRACE Stopped in here last week During Homebrewcon.
Nestled inside a courtyard that make it seem somehow outside the city. 10 -15 tables outside and at least triple that inside. Service was quite good, the beer and food were decent and the price was inline with what I'd expect to pay in the city. |
62 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Stopped in here after hitting the malted barley while in town for Homebrewcon.
The place was packed on an early wed evening until they opened downstairs where we found a seat in the cave at the bar. Old school feel and we each ordered up a pint of something different. Two IPA's and a dry stout. The IPA's were loaded with diacetyl but the stout was pretty good. We didn't order any food so I cant comment on that. The bartender was helpful but unapologetic about the substandard beers they serve. I might go back and order up a flight and maybe some food just to be sure but based up this trip this might be a brewery to skip. |
80 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST I stopped here last week while in PVD for Homebrewcon.
Large square space with the bar off to the left wall after you make it through the double doors. 30 or so tables a mix of high tops and seating at the bar. 20 or so deep on the draft menu with more in bottle or can. Simple food menu with pretzels (flavored or plain) and dips, sandwiches or salads. I got a plain pretzel with beer cheese dip and aside from being the oddest looking pretzel I'd ever seen it was quite tasty. They had a well thought out beer menu with 2 that they brew at the Isle Brewers Guild. Service was attentive and the cost was what I would expect from an establishment in the city I'd go back if in the area. |
80 /100 1920 MINERAL SPRING AVENUE UNIT 11, Awesome speakeasy of a brewery! Its a wonderful place to relax and unwind after a rough day. Great beer and even better staff who are always happy to help you decide which of their offerings is best for you. A breath of fresh air for the North Providence area as well as Rhode Island brewing! |
68 /100 High Spirits (Beer Store) 559 N MAIN ST Strip mall liquor store. Beer is in the back, one long shelf with the interesting beer/singles. Some rarites, tho. |
70 /100 Bottles (Beer Store) 141 PITMAN STREET Located in a strip mall. Open facility with beer hidden in the back. Laid out by location/style. Decent selection. |
86 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE Large, open store, with beer in the back. Two solid rows of shelves, with plenty of coolers. Good selection, laid out by state and country. |
88 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE Great find in small Providence. Made a pit stop to see whether they have some locals and ended up with 24 different cans; they gave a 20% discount as, well! Quite a large selection. Must visit if you are in Providence. |
26 /100 Basement Brew-Hah Inc. (Homebrew Shop) 116 CALVERLEY ST. Test Test test |
48 /100 36 EXCHANGE TERRACE Right downtown, this is a great location and is set-up very nicely. They had 6 house beers on tap and offered flights of 5 for $10++. Service was adequate. Beer quality wasn’t anything special, with most drinkable and nothing standing out. Forgettable beers but I liked the place itself. |
32 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST A tired old place right downtown. They had 6 house beers on tap when I visited. Flights of 6 available for $11++. Beer quality ranges from decent to god awful, with all sorts of brewing problems evident here. Due to the beer quality, I certainly can’t recommend this place. I’m sure they’ve seen better days. |
66 /100 Bayberry Beer Hall (Bar) 381 WEST FOUNTAIN STREET Modern, semi-elegant beer hall decorated very well. I liked everything about this place except the rip-off prices: flights of 3 for a whopping $12++. C’mon guys, that is insulting. The beer list was solid, but nothing incredible, amalgamating some nice New England and beyond beers. Service was fine. |
70 /100 Julian’s (Restaurant) 318 BROADWAY My pick for my best bar in town. Just outside the downtown, this is a really nice semi-elegant feeling place that is casual at the same time. Almost 20 taps, pretty well-chosen. 5 oz tasters available of everything, priced per beer, usually $2-3, very reasonable for a bar. They had a big food menu too with tons of vegan(-izable) options, as they make their own homemade seitan. Pricey food men though. Friendly service but not terribly knowledgeable about beer. Worth a visit. |
86 /100 Bayberry Beer Hall (Bar) 381 WEST FOUNTAIN STREET Visited on a busy Friday evening. Lucky enough to find a place at the bar. Good selection of taps. Interesting mix of New England stuff. Had something from CT. Food was excellent. A tad bit pricey but large servings. |
84 /100 Bayberry Beer Hall (Bar) 381 WEST FOUNTAIN STREET Located in Federal Hill this place is going for an indoor beer garden/farm to table kind of thing. Street parking is Hit or miss but it was a fairly easy walk from the downtown hotels. It's clear the owners are into modernist design which even extends to unique lettering of their beer menu. Like a lot of Rhode Island beer bars there's not a lot of local beer but they have a good selection of NE craft and the bartenders were very happy to talk craft beer. |
70 /100 Eno Fine Wines and Spirits (Beer Store) 225 WESTMINSTER ST Took a quick peak on a recent stop in Providence, has a small selection of beers, ranging from local to global craft. They have weekly tasting events, for both beer and wine. |
90 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE Big free parking lot. Very helpful friendly stuff. Good presentation. Got a nice mixed 6er of locals. Fair prices. Highly recommended if you are in the area. |
84 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST Located just a few blocks from the convention center, the malted barley is a nice, comfortable beer bar. They had mostly local and regional things on tap. I loved that they had smaller pour sizes available so I could sample a lot of things. They don’t have a ton of food but they serve everything late. The bartender was very friendly and talkative and made some good suggestions. I’d definitely go back the next time I’m in the area. |
88 /100 Julian’s (Restaurant) 318 BROADWAY Julian’s is located across the bridge from downtown, within a half mile of the convention center which was easy walking distance from my hotel. No A/C which was a bit of a problem on an unusually hot weekend night, but they also have outdoor seating. Definitely more of a dive bar feel except a number of taps of unusual/rare beer. They had a number of offerings from Belgium and Germany along with some good regional brews. There’s a number of vegetarian/vegan things on the menu, but the hamburger is also excellent and the large fries come in a legit bowl. The service was friendly especially after I invoked their buy a round for the kitchen special which I think is a splendid idea. All and all cool vibe, great beer, tasty food, good service, and all at reasonable prices. I’d love to go back. |
78 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Stopped in for dinner during the ne beer trip. Nice old pub with lots of wood and a fun basement area. The food was pretty normal pub fare and priced a little high. Had a flight and on my way. |
70 /100 36 EXCHANGE TERRACE So caught an early train from NYC to providence and rather than tell my family to pick me up I stopped in here for a few brews and cup of chowder. Nice location a little corporate feeling. Friendly bartender. 5 beers available the 2 I had were mediocre. Chowder was ok. For what it is not bad. |
88 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE Finally got a chance to visit this place recently. Nice location - easy to get to. Most beautiful liquor store anywhere with exposed brick walls. Good service. Fantastic selection for Rhode Island. (Still cannot compete with Massachusetts). Decent beer prices. Mixed sixer’s. Expensive whiskey prices though. |
96 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE This is one of the nicest beer stores I’ve experienced -- attractive and well stocked. The selection was so good I had to restrain myself, otherwise I would have dropped several hundred dollars. one of their distributors (Tony from B. United was there and gave some helpful suggestions on some pretty obscure Italian beers. I wish I lived closer to this place. |
48 /100 Hanley’s Ale House (Bar) 52 PINE ST Stopped in here mostly because I parked in the parking garage right across the street from it, and I had to use the restroom. It had Ale in the name, so I thought it might be cool. They did have a few craft beers on tap, but nothing worth actually ordering. I left after using the restroom and looking around the place a bit. At 2 PM, there was literally nobody here but the bartender. Maybe some folks in the kitchen. Regardless, this is a pass if you are looking for good beer. |
58 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Visited on a rainy afternoon. Street parking is available out front if necessary, but a parking garage isn’t far. Inside seems a bit run down and forgotten. Service was alright, but uncaring at the same time. The flight I ordered came quickly, but the person pouring and serving the beer didn’t really seem interested in doing so. A very odd feel to the place. I was glad they did flights, but was also just as happy to leave afterward. If you need Rhode Island beer ticks, make the visit. Otherwise, I recommend passing. The beer is mediocre at best, and the vibe is totally weird. |
82 /100 36 EXCHANGE TERRACE Visited on a quiet day shortly after they opened. We were pretty much alone other than the bartender and one other patron for the longest time. If you visit here, you will need to find parking somewhere else. There is nowhere to park close by other than metered spots a block or more away. Inside is an old pub type of feel. They had 8 beers on tap for my visit plus 1 cask, which they brought out and tapped while I was sitting at the bar. That was cool. The server was very helpful and attentive. She seemed to know her stuff. We talked about sour beer for more than half of my visit. All around, this place is decent. The beer won’t necessarily blow you away, but it’s decent and everything else is nice. |
90 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE It’s all about the vintage room. Wow. Great range. Excellent value. As a true bottle shop alone this place is world-class. Amazed at the shelf turds you yanks get. |
78 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Nice old-skool place in the heart of Providence next to a great coffee spot. I loved how they had the equipment infront of the bar. Nice touch. I didn’t have any food but I had a flight of what they had. A lot of beers made pretty well but not earth-shattering hop-bombs which you expect in the area now. A nice legacy place which i am pleased to say is still thriving and for that they deserve credit. |
60 /100 186 FOUNTAIN ST Nice folks. Food is tasty. Beer is average. |
76 /100 Providence GPub (Restaurant) 61 ORANGE STREET Big open space in a basement in downtown Providence. The building used to be part of the Providence Gas Company (hence the "G" in pub). I’ve been here twice so far. I love the atmosphere. Very relaxed. Service was good. Food was excellent. Beer selection is also very good. Not huge but something for everybody. Price point is a little on the high end, but I guess that’s the norm now. |
88 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST Downtown Providence has changed so much in the past 20 years. The Malted Barley is another nice addition. Large open interior. Good sized bar. Tap and Bottle selection is excellent (even for Rhode Island). Something for everyone. Service is also very good. The food menu is unique. They only serve fresh made pretzels, including an array of sandwiches with pretzels as buns. Be sure to try the nutella desert pretzel! |
88 /100 334 WESTMINSTER ST About a 5 minute walk from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. A nice, newer clean place right in downtown Providence. There’s over 30 beers on tap. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They make home made pretzels so that’s pretty much what you have for food. That, and sandwiches. There’s a pool table in the back. This place is worth checking out if you’re in the area. |
88 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE It doesn’t look like the picture anymore. They’re in an old building with lots of exposed brick. It’s an inviting and warm store full of kind and helpful staff. I loved that they had so much of their stuff refrigerated and that they offered a 10% discount for a mix 6. They had a pretty deep selection of local, regional, national, and imported craft. I haven’t yet been to other stores in the area but I would imagine this place is the standard that others compare themselves too. And they had plentiful parking which you don’t always get in city locations. I’ll go back again if I’m in the area. |
68 /100 Julian’s (Restaurant) 318 BROADWAY Came to this excellent beer bar some time ago. They had a Hofstettner bock on tap and some other rare beers. Overall really liked the place. |
40 /100 36 EXCHANGE TERRACE Visited this brewery some time ago. Quite commercial, nothing special. Beers did not have a lot flavor. |
52 /100 Julian’s (Restaurant) 318 BROADWAY I just don’t see the appeal here. Tried to walk in Sat at 2:30PM and was overwhelmed with the smell of cigarette smoke- this was on the hipster’s clothing. I have been before and it wasn’t this bad- people would not move to let people pass. The draft list isn’t that impressive. I was only interested in one beer left over from the Evil Twin takeover. New chef’s food looks interesting. Will try again on a weekday, |
62 /100 The Bar at AS220 (Bar) 115 EMPIRE ST. My wife and I stopped past the restaurant adjacent to the bar at AS220 for replenishment. From the outside it looks like they are two separate places, but inside it is all open plan with one side a kitchen and the other a bar. Has an arty/student vibe to it overall. Food btw was tasty and good value. The bar offers around 10 draught beers which offer a respectable enough range of regional brews, but on our visit nothing specifically from RI. They did however have some Narragansett in bottles/cans. In general I would say the styles of beers on offer were pretty safe and uneventful – an IPA, blonde ale, amber ale and whatnot. This place provides a decent stop for food and a beer, but I wouldn’t spend much time drinking here. OK. |
80 /100 Julian’s (Restaurant) 318 BROADWAY No visit to Providence is complete without a visit to Julian’s. It is located westward of central providence, but still well within walking distance. It is a relatively small, dimly lit (perhaps overly so) restaurant-bar. We visited mid-week for dinner and yet the place was still pretty busy. First-off the food was excellent and I would certainly return just for that. They offer a rather nice draught selection of some 20 lines with a healthy mix of local, regional and international beers. This included some sour Allagash beers, which I didn’t even see in Maine. Beers are available in a range of sizes, so we got to try quite a few. The bottle selection had some rarer and vintage beers on it (including some Mamouche), but you certainly have to be prepared to pay for it! Without question the top venue in town for eating a supping quality beer. |
74 /100 Rogue Island Local Kitchen & Bar (Restaurant) 65 WEYBOSSET STREET, THE ARCADE If you are looking for a good selection of local and regional beers in central providence Rogue Island Local Kitchen & Bar is the place for you. Central Providence seems to have relatively slim pickings if you want some decent beer. Thankfully this place exists. The majority of the place is a restaurant, but there is a modest bar area as soon as you enter. It has a modern hotel-bar feel to it, but don’t let that put you off. They offer 10 draught beers with a strong focus on RI beers with beers from Proclamation, Grey Sail, Whaler’s etc. Beer is available as flights, which helps someone who has sampled limited amounts of RI brews. In addition to that they have a small, but also locally-focussed bottle selection. Staff were attentive and friendly. If you are in central Providence and want decent local beer this is it. |
78 /100 Nikki’s Liquors (Beer Store) 32 BRANCH AVE Nikki’s Liquors is a pretty sizeable liquor store located due north of central Providence. Inside it is large, bright and clean. They have a couple of aisles full of beer as well as plenty of fridge space and a vintage/aging room at the back. Although I picked up a selection of more location brews it was obvious that this place has one of the widest selections of European/International anywhere nearby. If anything I would like a wider selection of local beers. Staff(owner?) came over to offer some suggestions and recommendations which was good. If you want a bottle shop in RI this is the place for you! |
