“I believe this place has moved closer to the waterfront, but its too much work to change it. This is a nice dining place, focus on meaty staples, smoked meats, burgers, steaks. My pork was good. Portions huge. Taplist mostly from Smoky Mountain Brewing, with a few third party beers and of course a selection of macros in bottle.“

“Interesting space; a reconverted church. Always nice to see that. Picnic tables outside, but the actual entrance is on the second floor. That took me a minute. Decently busy on a Monday afternoon. Pints $7, half $4. Flights available. Good service. Wifi. Beer quality substantially above average.“

“This spacious building has windows all around and plenty of comfortable furnishing. Outdoor patio is there for good weather days, they've got a pizza food truck on the lot. Xul is one of the busiest, if not the busiest brewery in Knoxville. I'd attribute that to their nostalgic branding alongside trendy, thick, sludgy beers. That's a very smart business move. I'm too old to be into the new hazies and adjunct heavy kettle sour ales but Xul has begun brewing quality lagers for old people like me. They're good at what they do.“

“Stopped and had lunch and beers at this excellent brewer of German style beers. Sat in the beer garden on a beautiful summer afternoon they even had live music. Had a brat was good. The beers were as good as any US brewer brewing German style beers that I’ve had. Really outstanding, compares well to Live Oak in Austin as the best German styles brewed in US. They had chairs in the beer garden from Augustiner in Munich. “

“Patty and I stopped in today for a few. I liked being able to try many different beers. They had only 1 NEIPA though and it was low quality. A couple stouts were ok. Places like this in New York have a better selection of high quality Beers.“

“Patty and I stopped in here after Pour Taproom. I had the 5 AM Stout for starters. I was toasted after all these big beers. Seemed like a nice place. They had some unique glassware I've never seen before. The bartender was nice.“

“Kind of a weird place. Quirky faux castle with a large beer garden. Spacious interior with a large bar. I found the ambiance to be a bit off putting and cold while trying to imitate German beer halls. Large selection with about 30 beers on tap focuses on German classic styles. Schwarz was solid, but the hefeweizen was a disappointment. Wasn't too thrilled with food either.“

“Pretty big taproom with patio outside. Modern stylish industrial interior. The place reminded me of automobile showroom and it turns out I was right. The neighborhood is not that nice, but what can you do. 20 taps with more beers in cans and bottles. Focus is mostly on IPAs and sours joined by couple of lagers and stouts. Very good quality. Certainly worth checking out.“

“Smallish place with a patio in the back. Long bar and quite narrow main room. Seems to be popular with the locals. About 15 beers on tap and couple of seltzers. Wasn't too impressed with the ones I had and frankly the rest of them didn't seem too interesting. Worth checking out if you're in the area.“

“Family friendly with lots of space for games indoors and an adequate patio outside. Pretty diverse crowd with college kids, neighborhood folks and out of town visitors. 20 taps with a good variety and about the same number of cans and bottles in a to-go fridge to the right side of the bar. Food trucks and nearby restaurants for food service. Parking is very limited but more can be found just a short walk away.“

“I'm not sure this belongs on Ratebeer. It's a speakeasy focused on cocktails. Years ago this was the end all to be all for high end cocktails in Knoxville, but they've got some competition these days. Service was very, very slow even by proper speakeasy standards. The beer list is just a few bottles. This is not a beer destination.“

“Hi-Wire has joined this changing neighborhood in south Knoxville. The facility is large, I think it used to be a lumber yard or something? It's been a while. There's a ton of seating indoors with TV's and games. Plenty of patio seating is available as well. The beer is quite good and a pretty broad selection was available. I haven't had Hi-Wire beer in years and I was impressed this time. Lots of to go options were also available. Prices are friendly too.“

“Located halfway between Bearden and Downtown, this is a cool little taproom with a good outdoor space. Service was friendly and the beer was really good overall. They're doing a handful of more experimental styles, something similar in idea to what you may see at Pretentious or Elkmont Exchange. Some of the overly hoppy styles could use some tweaking but some other beers just knocked it out of the park. This will become one of my staples on return visits.“

“This is a hip bar tucked away inconspicuously in a pretty empty strip mall. They've done well with the space, there's a huge amount of fascinating memorabillia on the walls and a decent collection of vinyl. There's a cozy patio out back in close proximity to the train tracks. They host live music pretty often. I had a great time here but I'm not sure this is a great stop for the beer geek. They had maybe two or three local beers and a lot of macros and more widely distributed craft beers.“

“16 house taps with an outstanding variety that offers something for everyone, especially a beer geek. Every beer is quality and only varies from good-to-great depending on personal tastes. Gets a bit crowded since it's a kind of smallish recycled downtown space, but it's an inviting and comfortable venue. Bar servers are great, but the management seems to wait until people are lined up and fidgeting at the bar before bringing on another server. That's my only complaint, but I guess part of the Pretentiousness is to make the customers wait for it.“

“Looks like an old service station converted to brewpub, with three rollup glass "garage doors" on the front. Spartan but welcoming wood and metal seating inside. A small walk-up bar for ordering food and brews takes up the backside along with the brewhouse. Nice selection of 21 house brews on the taps, with crowlers and select bottled brews available for carry-out. Limited menu specializes in great tasting fried chicken sandwiches and brisket burgers with some novel twists. All 10 beers I've had from this brewery have been good to fantastic. Service is good but kind of a bottleneck when ordering food from the bar counter, and on one occasion a person in our party got her food delivered to the table after the rest of us were nearly finished. No parking on site, but a church next door shares some of their parking spaces for brewpub patrons.“

“Nice alternative to Downtown Wine and Spirits with lots of wine taps and 2 beer taps for growler fills. The selection is about the same number-wise for beers in cans and bottles, but they will bust up six packs of anything, whereas the previously mentioned place always has a few they won't bust. The downtown beer bars and retail outlets are now wisely considering other downtown outlets' choices when ordering from distributors and thus provide a nice variety at all locations while minimizing overlap as much as possible. This is primarily a wine store with a nice liquor and craft beer selection on the side. Pricing is maybe a little better here than the other downtown wine store.“

“Nice brewery and bar setup inside a metal clad industrial park building. 20 plus taps now with 14 or so of them offering a variety of styles from the home team selection and the others being guest taps from other locals. Of the 18 house brews I've tried, all but one have been good-to-very good. Also have a kitchen now and serve a few pub grub items including house smoked ribs and wings, and a Benton's BLT. Both the food and brews are very reasonably priced and service is excellent. The only downside is they don't do growler fills. However they have a large cooler with prepackaged 32 ounce crowlers that nearly represents everything on the taps.“

“Great addition to the up-and-coming, revitalized area all along Sutherland Avenue. Nice patio and chill indoor bar and seating area are most welcoming. Decent selection with one IPA and 4-5 other home team brews with several lagers. Service is good as well. I was really stoked about this place, but the main reason I'll not likely return is no growler fills unless you purchase one from them with their logo on it and also remember to return with that same growler every time. Lame Asheville hipster shit right there. Updated score in May 21 (from 3.4 to 4.2), based on increased selection of 10 taps and the availability of to-go cans that arose during the Pandemic days.“

“The Place: The parking is a bit iffy yet manageable. The crowd seems to be more college aged people, and it can get really really loud in there. I couldn't hear my partner from across the table. The scenery is nice, with giant pool tables and a cool looking bar. Good outdoor seating too The Service: Average. The guy was nice but he didn't really seem to have any recommendations. Fast to refill your drink though which is fine by me The Beer: Huge selection, we managed to try 4 beers. All of the beers were pretty average, except one which was undrinkable. It seems the beers here were rushed to get this place open. Would have preferred a smaller selection with more refined beers. Overall, would not come again. There's plenty of breweries in SoKno that are actually local to Knoxville, and put out much higher quality products“

“Visited on opening night, and as expected it was packed. Right off the bat, there was parking, but not really enough - I imagine that will not be an issue once the crowd settles down. It's in a large concrete block building with high ceilings and concrete floors. The bar is clean and industrial with a tile finish. Service was really efficient, and pretty impressive for a hectic opening day. Great dog-friendly patio for days that aren't 90+ degrees, so looking forward to trying that. They only had 4 beeers, but they plan on expanding selection soon.“

“Stopped by on a Saturday Afternoon and it was busy but not packed (the place is huge, so a large crowd can look pretty small in here). It's in a portion of a converted warehouse, so lots of exposed concrete and high ceilings (it can get loud, although the manager has said that sound deadening material will installed soon). The is a huge patio in in the back right now, with plans for a rooftop bar in the near future. On-site parking is a bit dicey, but street parking is allowed and there is a garage nearby with free evening and weekend parking - it's a bit of walk, but you could probably use the exercise. The selection was all Hi-Wire stuff with a lot of taproom only selections. Cool place.“

“Stopped by on their second day and again on July 4th. Knoxville's newest (for now) taproom. It's a neat space. it's actually formerly an alley that has been covered and converted into a beer hall, so there's a lot of exposed brick and ghost signs left over. The selection is good and they had quite a few brewery only selections. The service is OK, it kind of depends on if you get an owner or an actual professional bartender. But we liked it and will be back!“

“On my visit all but one of the taps were house brews with quite a variety. The guest tap had an interesting, one-off Gypsy Circus Cider concoction. Six ounce and pint pours are a nice offering and the pricing is good. Growler fills at a great price as well. As mentioned before it's a repurposed, semi-industrial building that has been updated to house the brewery and a tasting room. Spartan but shiny decor and 15-foot ceilings combined with comfortable seating produce a relaxing, chill vibe in the tap room. Open view on one side of the tap room into the brew works. Understated background music allowed for carrying on a pleasant conversation. There was a big screen TV that was silent during my visit, but which I suppose is a must-have for accommodating the sporting event viewer. Service was great on a late afternoon but there wasn't a crowd. Food trucks appear on a regular basis. Great neighborhood pub and all 7 (updated review July 2019 - now 22) of their beers I've had to date were above-average to excellent.“

“Nice little taco joint in South Knoxville. It is in a on old, I dunno, I think car repair place? the vibe is laid back and they definitely cater to the outdoorsy, bike/hike crowd, although the crowd is pretty diverse. “Love this place. is in a converted former department store basement in the heart of downtown. It has a small but well chosen selection at both bars, and the food is surprisingly well made. It can be a bit loud at times in the main bar, as you might expect.“

“This one-time downtown department store space has been refashioned into 11 shiny new bowling lanes and two full service bars, one upstairs and one downstairs. Also a worthy food destination with small plate selections incorporating regional farm products and offered at very reasonable prices. Beer selection is not huge but has a surprising slant to the craft brew side. I've seen a few things here that weren't available elsewhere downtown. Plenty of space away from the bowling action for relaxing, chatting and eating so it's a nice place for a small (or large) get-together that has something for everyone.“

“Wow, this neighborhood has really grown around comparative old-timers Central Flats and Taps. This restaurant specializes in Naan pizzas and panini and gets very crowded often. A pool hall is available in an adjacent room for those seeking less of the restaurant vibe. The beer selection is decent with some local stuff available. With so many quality beer options nearby these days, it's hard to prioritize this place, but it certainly can end up being a good time.“

“Printshop is a convenient addition to nearby Trailhead and Alliance. It's now more than worth doing a little crawl by the river. They converted an old warehouse space into a taproom and it's on the bare side of things. There is a lot of seating and open space. While I was visiting a couple folks came in, read over the beer list, then walked out saying nothing was on they wanted to drink, but they would be back another time. I found that baffling as the list covered beers ranging from hoppy to malty to sour to Belgian to American to light to dark. Good variety. The quality of what I had was good too.“

“Pretty much like every other in this big-box strip mall chain, but newer and less tired for now. They have 6 growler fill taps and 700 plus bottles/cans. If you're in the area from out of town this and McScrooges have the largest selection and cheapest prices for craft beer, but neither one covers the local scene like other smaller places around Knoxville. Seems to have more single selections than others in the chain, but maybe because it's been a while since I've been in one. Have to say the big buying/warehousing power across state lines seems to provide some nice out-of-state bottles and cans that no one else in the area has, similar to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. But need to check the dates on the product since evidently they don't.“

“I feel kind of guilty rating a mega-chain so highly, but this is legit on selection and pricing. I mean, the ambiance is mega store, the service is professional, and they are fairly priced. My biggest gripe is the lack of local representation.“

“We came here on 18.8.2018. Very large German brewery and restaurant in Knoxville. Quite authentic beer garden with original Augustiner chairs and even two Strandkörbe (North sea beach chairs). 6 German beers on tap: Alt, Weißbier, Helles, Pils, Radler, Bock. They serve beers in original glassware including 1 liter Mass glasses. In addition they have 10 US Craft guest beers on tap including Sculpin and 60 min IPA. Waitresses are all wearing original Bavarian dirndls. Weißwurst and Pretzel were also good. Overall an interesting place coming close to an original Bavarian brewery.“

“This is the new reincarnation of Brickyard Beer & Wine. It's a weird set up - during the day the space is occupied by a little neighborhood cafe and in the evening the kitchen closes and they become a bar. As such, the ambiance is a little muddled. Now, those of you that remember the old Brickyard Beer will be happy to know that the service issues that plagued the old place have fixed and the bartenders are very professional. The selection is smaller, though, so it's a trade off, I suppose.“

“Brand new place almost under the James White Parkway Bridge. It's, as the name suggests, a converted print shop. There's a lot space here, and they've done a good job of mixing clean modern touches while still keeping the character of the building. Plenty of big windows to sit and watch the Tennessee River right outside. When I visited on a Friday afternoon service was spot on. Right now they have 9 of their own beer and the rest are well chosen guests. Can't wait to go back.“

“Conveniently located on Gay Street, Suttree's more or less earns its rep. Tap list wasn't quite as extensive as I'd expected, but it was certainly good and had many interesting regionals and one-offs to sample from. Dive bar ambiance, plus a side room with vintage pinball (Dolly Parton!) and games. Saturday afternoon vibe was rather fratty, and the service sometimes left a bit to be desired (dear bartender: don't get bent when a customer asks you for water; it's your job). Good overall for sure, though.“

“It's crazy to see this old, abandoned warehouse full of life again. The last two decades I've spent walking above this building, it's hard to imagine it any other way. So this pour your own concept is starting to pop up all over the country. It's a neat novelty. Especially here at Pour, they push the idea of just having a splash of several different beers. I usually prefer to sit down with a proper beer. The cost is exorbitant here, just like any other similar concept I've seen. We're talking $0.45 an ounce on the low end and right around $1.00 an ounce on the high end. I can go into numerous other beer bars and get the same products on either end of the price spectrum at a much, much lower price. The tap list is expansive here, but in this day and age it's nothing that you can't find elsewhere around town. The interior is stark with the old building adding much of the character, rounded out by a couple flat screens above the taps. The host on duty was super friendly and eager to explain everything to us.“

“The old bar crawl from Market Square to Old City now has no gaps. Finally this long empty building is open again with a beer bar. They've got a decent selection of beer to go along with a big, rotating draft list. There were a few things on tap that I didn't see too many other places. They also have a humidor on one side, the smell of which permeated the storefront. Prices are fair, maybe on the higher end for the area. It's a cool, cozy place.“
