64 /100 1-6-1 NUTTARIHIGASHI, CHUO-KU Almost like a portacabin extension to the brewery. Got pretty hot on the sunny day we were there. Three beers available made in the adjacent brewery, IPA, Pale and Weizen. Beer flight available. Good prices. Early days for them, but I wish them lots of luck. Extra points for selection given that I don’t think you can get this anywhere else in the world. |
78 /100 Craft Beer Kan (Bar) 1-1-1 HANAZONO, CHUO-KU Pretty much attached to the station, you end up sitting outside the bar looking at the car drop off point and bus station but it was much more pleasant than I have made it sound. Limited seating but the turnover seems fairly quick so you should get a seat if you visit in the daytime and hang around. Lots of taps with lots of local stuff. Mostly Japanese but with some imports. Has a ramen shop style ’pay at the vending machine’ thing going on which was initially a bit confusing, but is actually quite straightforward. ¥500 tickets for Japanese half pints and ¥700 for imports. Staff are friendly and helpful. Fun place! |
74 /100 Ponshu-Kan Niigata Station (Beer Store) 1-96-47 HANAZONO, CHUO-KU Great place with an enjoyable vend your own sake gimmick which allows you to try loads of sakes at a good price. Beers to take out were not so exciting, but some nice stuff in amongst the less interesting ones. I am clueless regarding sake but this was a lot of fun. |
78 /100 Olive Another Pint (Bar) 3-2-16 BENTEN, CHUO-KU Fun place. Beer Trip Olive and Olive Another Pint are pretty much next door to one another and are pretty much the same, so my rating for both places will be the same. Decent selection of beers at prices which seemed quite like Tokyo ones. Whichever place you are in, you seem to be able to order from both taplists which is great. Staff are friendly and the locals are nice. Will definitely be back next time we’re in town. Both bars are down a little eating and drinking alleyway. |

The pin is in the right place for Olive Another Pint so follow that one. Both bars are down a little eating and drinking alleyway. |
60 /100 Joestar Grill & British Pub (Restaurant) 1-1-26 BENTEN-CHO, CHUO-KU Restaurant / pub right outside Niigata Station. Grilled meats from many different beasts looked and smelled very nice though we did not have any since we were full. 10 taps included London Pride, Punk IPA, Suntory Premium, Kirin Cidre, and 6 rotating crafts. Seems they like BrewDog a lot here. Nice enough place, filled with young people mostly drinking cocktails and eating. I would like to go back and eat. ¥500 charge and pretty high prices make it a bit steep for just stopping in for a beer. UK pint ¥1300, half ¥700. |
72 /100 Ponshu-Kan Niigata Station (Beer Store) 1-96-47 HANAZONO, CHUO-KU A must stop for people who want to try sake. Over 100 sakes for tasting, at ¥100 a sample for most. These are small samples, so actually the price is pretty high per ml, but it’s perfect for getting to know what’s around in Niigata or for getting some ticks. Put 1 token in the machine, place your choko, and it pours for you. Also about 25-30 local beers for sale for take out, and all the sakes are also for sale to take away. Great selection of one-cups. Fun place to hang for a while sampling. |
78 /100 Beer Trip Olive (Bar) 3-2-16 BENTEN, CHUO-KU, Best place in Niigata as of June 2014. 12 taps, 11 craft, all the ones we tried in excellent condition. Good, knowledgeable service, very friendly and welcoming. Great place to hang out. Table charge got us some tasty potato salad. Prices not cheap, but seem to be average for Niigata. |
