Wade’s Wines (Beer Store)

“(Visited 03/2015): Wade’s Wines is located in Westlake Village in an office park and as others have notes is pretty difficult to find even with GPS. Once located, parking in front of the store is plentiful.

The inside of the store is packed with shelves of wine, beer and other libations. The beer is primarily located in the back of the store in coolers and on shelves.

The store stocks several hundred bottles from CA, the USA and around the world. Many breweries from the state like Russian River, Lost Abbey, Almanac, Drakes and Lagunitas. Other craft brewers like Logsdon, Ninkasi and even stuff from my home state like Rockmill.

Service during my visit was attentive and friendly both while I was browsing and at checkout.

Overall this is a store worth checking out despite the difficulty in finding it.“

“Saw this from the freeway and decided to stop in on a Tuesday morning. Really nice selection of wine and spirits. Beer selection is pretty decent as well (ended up spending $90 pretty quickly). Was surprised to see a massive tasting room with 120 beers on tap that looked really nice, but only open Thurs-Sun. You absolutely cannot tell how nice this place is from the outside. One of the guys that worked there gave us a nice quick tour of the place - you could tell he was proud of it. My only gripe with this place is that I got no cell signal in their beer aisle, so I couldn’t check ratings to help me figure out my purchases. I went to the front of the store and got 1 bar. Wireless would be nice!“

Stopped in on the way up north. My original plan was to get some lunch and try the DIPA (that I have already tried at GABF but I wanted a pint). Unfortunately they have run out for the year. They’ve also run out of the pumpkin and they haven’t put on the Grand Cru yet. The good news is that they still have plenty of Octoberfest left... ugh. What do you have for guest beers? Oh, what’s that? Stone IPA and a bunch of macros. No thanks, I’ll just take a look at the food menu. No lunch specials? Even your appetizers start at $10? I’ll just use the bathroom and show myself out.

I already knew the food prices were high but I hoped that there would at least be a sensible lunch option. Nope. There are plenty of other places to eat so I don’t particularly need to spend $15 (after tax and tip) on a burger. The stop wasn’t a total waste as I did buy a couple bottles of the Trader Joes 2013 next door and ticked a Bevmo across the street.“

If this was somewhere else it probably wouldn’t belong here but 1) it’s literally a stone’s throw away from another rateable place (BJ’s) and 2) aside from Wade’s Wines there aren’t any (good) liquor stores in the area. It’s really more of the former though. Besides, they do have some good stuff. Bruery, AleSmith, Stone, Chimay, and of course the Vintage Ale in addition to a bunch of other less desirable stuff. The food selection is about the same as every other Trader Joe’s, and it’s all over priced. The beer on the other hand is relatively cheap compared to other places. They get the YuleSmith releases so check that out in the summer.“

I was told that they might not be open on Sundays so I was a bit surprised to see people at the bar while I was next door browsing the bottle selection. This is in the same building as Wade’s Wines and is of course owned by them as well. They advertise 100+ taps and they are in fact brewing on site now. I hadn’t even heard of this place until a few months ago (from bman) and it sounds like they’re ready to do their first anniversary party this weekend. They also plan to start offering growlers of the house beers at the same time they do the party.

It appears that they have a different fight of wine and another of beer every week to pick from. When I was there it was a flight of Almanac beers which included the 3 single hop beers as well as a gose. The gose was pretty good but I didn’t enjoy the single hop pales very much. They have a number of other premade flights on the front page of the drink menu and every tap shows both a pint and a sample price. You can keep busy just working through the new beers here. The house beers were interesting. I tried all four of them in a flight. I didn’t care for the SMASH beer with Centennial or the saison but I liked the Belgian IPA.

Just like next door at Wade’s, the service is very good, the prices are high, and the selection is hard to beat.“

I’d heard a lot about this place, mostly from bman, that the selection is awesome and that I have to visit. The funny thing is that it’s right between Ladyface (where I’ve been a dozen times) and LAB (where I’ve been several times) and I never realized that it was there. It’s also hard to find from the street. It’s in the back of an industrial complex and there are no signs visible from the street. Inside is very large for a liquor store. Wine takes up about 80% of the store but in the back is a whole aisle of beer, half of which is refrigerated and the other half not. The selection is pretty impressive. Tons of California made beers, many of which from places that I’ve been to but had no idea were bottling. I also saw a ton of Mikkeller bottles on the shelf. Just this one aisle is enough to keep you busy for a while. Prices were a bit high but not too far out of line. All the employees were extremely nice too. I will return.“

“FINALLY got a chance to come here. Tasting room attached to Wade’s Wines. About 100 beers on tap and tons of wines available for tasting as well. Some bottles, but they’re overpriced in the tasting room. Free pretzels with some small snack plates (sausage, cheese, olives) available. All beers available in sample pours as well as full pours. Prices are a little high (4 oz range from $2.50 - $4.50, full beers were all about $7-$9). A bit hectic in terms of service, but they really put in a lot of effort and make you feel welcomed. Would definitely return if the hours were more convenient and it were closer. They also have the Sundowner Brewing beers available here.“

“Absolutely loved this place. Visited 2 weeks ago and was happily surprised with their selection. Don’t forget to ask about their library, which has harder to find beers behind the counter in their tasting room. I picked up some good RR’s in there. They also have over 100 beers on tap (thursday-sunday), with special tasting flights every Thursday, so definitely make a stop if you are in the area!“

“OK, first, agreed. It is hard to find. Just trust your GPS. There are no signs, and it is in back so you can’t see much of anything but an office park from the road. But it is worth it. They have a pretty amazing scotch selection as well, BTW. Beer is in the back, some in coolers, some on shelves. No real .rar whalez, but a lot of good shit, including some stuff (like Mephistopheles) that I did not even know was distributed in California. Prices are a bit all over; some things are very reasonable, others a little high. Lots of Belgians and locals, everything else is a little spottier. I am just bummed that I got there on a Tuesday and the Sundowner was closed; that looks awesome as well!“

“Kind of hard to find. It’s all the way in the back of a business park. The store seems to be much more focused on wine, but definitely a nice beer selection. Service was very helpful and friendly, prices were good as well. Unfortunately the tasting bar was closed.“

“Renamed tasting room that was originally Wade’s Wine Tasting room (originally with 20 or so taps). They have expanded since and have 102 taps...you read that correctly! 60 or so bottles as well that they don’t sell next door. Pretzels and snacks. Really nice atmosphere with a bunch of wine paraphernalia. Lots of wine available as well (Malibu Sundowner is a Wine label of the owner of Wade’s). Staff is mostly knowledgeable. Beers are all available in full glasses or 4oz tasters. Prices are on the higher side but still reasonable. Still difficult for a first time visitor to find. Tap selection has quite a few local stuff as well as craft beer from around the country, Europe and Japan. No macros. Its not often I can find a bar within 50 miles of my house that has 7 unrated beers on tap. Impressive. I hope they can get enough traffic to have 102 beers rotate/stay fresh.“

“The location is a little tricky to find; on the freewayside of an office park. It reminded me of Lost Abbey in that. In complete honestly the star here is the wine but they have an interesting selection of beer. Nice that it didn’t just focus on CA brews. I would recommend combining this with a trip to Ladyface about 3 miles down the road. Check their hours before going.“

“Stopped in a long time ago. Huge interior for a BJs. Crowded at night. Beer was standard (as it seems all BJs locations are at this point). Typical food, shopping mall environment. Very typical. If you are in the area consider going somewhere more local and authentic: Ladyface, Lab Brewing, and Wolf Creek. All have better beers (across the board) and in general better food.“

“I have been living in the area for 25 years and this place is the best beer shop around period. Over 600 beers of high quality and hard to find items. If you like craft beer and are coming through this area do yourself a favor and take a look see. Beer tastings every other Thur. night which are a great way to try new beers...10x2 oz. pours for 5$!“

“Awesome little store. Especially for LA. Hard to find but I like that. Has a nice smell to it. No macros just high quality micros and nice selection of europian brews. I picked up 2 Alesmith Decadence, RR Temptation, Ballast Point Black Marlin, Hair of the Dog Fred & RR PtE, HOTD Ruth, and a Leviathan Barley Wine. They also had Consencration and Cuvee De Tomme 750’s which I have not seen anywhere else in LA. Even picked up a 12 bottle styro shipper for $6. Great little store with good service. They even had a beer tasting while I was there. Cheers to small stores like this who bring in twice the good beer the BevMo’s do.“

“Hard to find in industrial area, no sign. Once you get inside it’s a whole other story. Even though the employee was more of a wine guy, he made every effort to answer questions and assist in any way he could. The selection of beers was very good. Great selection of local Cali beers, micros, and imports. If you are into wine and spirits they have an amazing selection. You may end up paying a bit more for theirs beers than some of the other competitors, but you would be lucky to find their selection anywhere else. This place carries zero mass market beers. We took beers home with us on the plane and for a charge, they gave us a great transportation container. Would definitely visit again if in the area.“

“Truly a great little bottle shop! Should cover you for all your beer, wine and spirtits needs. Tons of scotch and brandy and tequila. Only thing I didn’t see were sakes. The place has 4 different ice ciders which seems to be pretty rare for anywhere outside of Canada and the NE. Some real gems in the beer department too, stuff that is here before anyone else gets it. I will add them to the availability tab. Shop is huge, everyone their is helpful, and the beer buyer seems to know his stuff. Also a bunch of local beers I haven’t seen bottled before. Easy to miss driving by though.“

“This place is the real deal. They stock nothing but high quality craft beer, and their staff is very knowledgeable. When I went earlier this week, they had just gotten in Cuvee de Tomme and Rasputin XII, both of which were reasonably priced given the product. The interior feels a bit cramped (probably the low ceilings), but with ample room to browse one can’t complain. Another important note: Wade’s Wines keeps their interior temperature closer to cellar temp (or in the 60s at least), which is a welcome change for both the beer freshness and the beer customer. I also heard they do legit tastings on thursdays. I will be back soon!“

“Visited March 5, 2009. A haven for purists. Over 500 specialty beers with very few supermarket offerings. Definitely a focus on hoppy and belgian styles, but good representation across the board. A strong selection of limited items like Consecration, Angel’s Share, Pliny the Elder, Ten Fiddy, etc. They also have a homebrewer working there who is very knowledgeable. This area needed a shop like this!“
