70 /100 3-8 IKEGAMICHO, UTSUNOMIYA-SHI Fun local brewpub in Utsunomiya. The headbrewer basically asks his usual customers for ideas and brews original recipes based on those suggestions. That makes for some crazy brews, including Tom Yum Goong and Garigari-kun beers... House beers are pretty cheap, guests beers (mostly from Tochigi) are also decently priced. No food menu so you can bring your own. Overall a pretty original place, can be a fun stop on your way back from a trip to Nikko for example. |
76 /100 3-8 IKEGAMICHO, UTSUNOMIYA-SHI Nice new place in Utsunomiya. 10 taps, 2 macro, the rest will be mainly Tochigi breweries. Friendly staff and good prices (¥800 max for 420ml). Utsunomiya brewery will be brewing here soon. |
74 /100 1-5-12 HIGASHI HANAWADA, UTSUNOMIYA-SHI Nice place, bit out of the way, but if you are on Utsunomiya you should definitely go here. Pretty small and the opening hours are flexible, so best to phone and check beforehand. They brew in small amounts so the menu is always changing, and it seems like he is quite an experimenter, so they tend to be new beers too. With their bottles, they always have one light, one dark and one fruit beer, but if you are lucky they might have some from the previous batch. On my visit, the dark was their amber, the fruit was a pear beer, and I can’t remember the light one, but I have a bottle in my fridge. On tap they had a lovely stout which tasted a lot stronger than it was, a piney IPA, and a very interesting hoppy wheat beer. Taps are served in glasses of about 300ml and are ¥500. Bottles are ¥525. Really glad we went here as it was a nice place, and the owner was very friendly. Oh, and they don’t do food, so encourage you to take your own. |
60 /100 1-5-12 HIGASHI HANAWADA, UTSUNOMIYA-SHI Small cafe attached to the small brewery. Brewer serves beer and brews at the same time. Several of the beers are quite idiosyncratic. They are happoshu by license so they all contain fruit, spice, or herbs. Some of the fruit beers are quite well done, with proper hopping and good malt flavors. That is to say, they taste like beer. About a 15 minute walk from JR Utsunomiya station. Seems like a friendly little pub. I went in the afternoon and was the only customer, and the brewer hung out and chatted with me the whole time. Nice guy for sure. Not really worth a special trip, but good if you are in the area. |
