66 /100 The British Bobby (Restaurant) 3-1209 ISLAND HIGHWAY EAST Definitively worth a visit for pub fare.
Now closed due to fire - Jan 2023 |
52 /100 Cascadia Liquor Store - Parksville (Beer Store) 389 ALBERNI HWY UNIT #2 Large selection of local, BC and Canadian craft though may be focused on price vs quality |
30 /100 BC Liquor Store - Parksville North (Beer Store) 810 WEST ISLAND HWY Not a craft beer destination though starting to expand on imports |
18 /100 Liquor Depot @ Parksville (Beer Store) 163 ALBERNI HWY A dollar store. Not a craft destination. |
30 /100 BC Liquor Store - Parksville (Beer Store) 319B EAST ISLAND HWY Not really a craft beer destination/store. More for beach wines. |
68 /100 109-425 STANFORD AVE E. Small taproom that seems to get busy, and they close kind of early because everything closes early on the island once you leave Victoria. The whole COVID/CERB thing meant that they had one server trying to do everything, including wiping down tables and serving people at the picnic tables on the other side of the parking lot. She did the best she could. They had a bunch of whacky sounding beers with various fruits and whatnot. A couple were executed well. They also have flagships that seem to be pretty well-distributed on the island. I like this place as a stop in the greater Nanaimo area, and the pizzas looked decent, too. |
66 /100 109-425 STANFORD AVE E. 2019-08-19. Relatively modest sized spot - small bar area, a few tables and a small three picnic tables patio in the parking lot. Kitchen has limited menu and is not open every day. 6-8 house beers on tap today and a few guest taps as well. Service is fine. Beers are okay but disappointing as they are mostly accessible / mainstream takes on the styles. The hoppy beers were all more malt forward than my preference, for example. A little disappointing to be honest, but not helped by my mood after a bit of a drive and crowds at the tourist trap we visited prior! Worth a stop if in the area but not a must do for me. The Low Pressure Porter was my 7000th rating from Canada at time of entry. |
46 /100 109-425 STANFORD AVE E. Parksville’s only brewery currently, so we decided to pop in while passing through. Small, intimate taproom. They had 6 house beers on tap, plus a guest. Flights of 4 available for $8++. Beer quality ranged from mediocre to poor - they just don’t know what they’re doing. Pleasant service and a comfortable place to hang out, just don’t expect a decent beer. |
78 /100 The British Bobby (Restaurant) 3-1209 ISLAND HIGHWAY EAST I would normally avoid a British or Irish bar abroad like the plague, but this place is so gloriously over the top it demands a visit. We were greeted by the owner dressed as a British police officer and ate our meal (fish & chips of course) listening to the theme to The Wombles, The Laughing Policeman & Georgie Girl. The place is packed with British paraphernalia including saucy seaside postcard. Beerwise, they have Fuller's London Pride & ESB on tap, but more interestingly they have ales from nearby Mt Arrowsmith and other micros. Food and service were both very good. |
34 /100 Liquor Depot @ Parksville (Beer Store) 163 ALBERNI HWY Somewhat small store and selection. I found the staff antagonizing. I’d really been hoping for a jewel in the rough but alas the search continues in this area on the mid-Island. |
48 /100 BC Liquor Store - Parksville (Beer Store) 319B EAST ISLAND HWY Some nice little treasures like Brooklyn Sorachi Ace for $6 per bottle. Yes, I’ll do that! Many of the Island usuals. Friendly staff. Found a few of Nanaimo’s White Sails beers and many of Longwood and Red Arrow’s beers. |
38 /100 Liquor Depot @ Corfield (Beer Store) 160 CORFIELD STREET Nothing great but has some more domestic beers from British Columbia. A few nice finds from Four Mile and limited edition Granville Island. Definitely the better of the independents but a chain like Metro Liquor or Liquor Plus would cleanup in this town. |
