62 /100 George’s (Bar) 61 HIGH STREET Open plan pub which, well... I want to like this place. Four really well-kept real ales on the bar, a smattering of more than acceptable bottles (ubiquitous in Cambridge but not in these parts), and friendly. Laid-back friendly. But... the atmosphere is lacking. Smells a bit like fish and wet dog. Having said this, the beer I’m drinking is bloody brilliant. It’s pubs like this that would, 95% of the time, plunk Abbot on the bar and that would be that. Not here though: a couple from Wolf Brewery, one from Cottage, and a micro mild (in December!) Give it a go, see what you think. |
68 /100 Ship Inn (Bar) 1 NENE PARADE Likeable boozer by the River Nene. Probably easier to get here via the High Street, but arriving by the scenic route along the river imbues it with a welcome countrified air. Five ales on at pre-recession prices. I’m drinking Jaipur for £3.00 per pint. Yum. Popular, dog-friendly and tastefully decorated (i.e. given a makeover to keep it from falling apart, but the old-fashioned charm is still intact), it’s worth stopping by for at least one should choice or circumstance find you in March. |
