82 /100 Greenwood’s Grille & Ale House (Restaurant) 186 GREENWOOD AVE Great bar with a extra area for dinning. Good selection of beer. I happened to be there after a Ithaca tasting night. Staff is friendly and the food is more than you average bar food. |
90 /100 Greenwood’s Grille & Ale House (Restaurant) 186 GREENWOOD AVE This is the best place in northern Fairfield county for beer. They have multiple selections on tap and rotate them often. They also have Microbrewery tastings one Wednesday each moth, thIs month it was Dogfish brewery where they had six Dogfish beers on tap.
The food is also great and they may have the best burger I have ever had.
The staff is knowledgeable about beer and it’s a fun place to hang out. Gorgeous old bar with pressed tin roof in building dating from the mid 1800s. It is rumored that Mr. Mark Twain himself quaffed here.
My only gripe is there are a few Yankee fans known to frequent the establishment.
They do NOT have Bud on tap thank God.
Check this place out it’s great!

82 /100 Old Heidelberg (Restaurant) 55 STONY HILL RD The food is my favorite part of this place. I had the rouladen when I was there. Good German beer list. Most were ones you could get in the area. Staff was great also. |
88 /100 Old Heidelberg (Restaurant) 55 STONY HILL RD Went here tonight for dinner. The tap list, while small, is impressive. The also offer every German beer that is available for purchase in CT and get some rare ones on occasion. The atmosphere is that of a German house. Out back, there’s a nice size biergarden that isn’t yet open for the season. They have frequent festivals here that are worth checking out. The food is top notch as is the service. Definitely worth a stop if you’re interested in an authentic Bavarian experience. Just make sure you’re coming for the food and not just the beer as this is a restaurant and has no bar. During peak dining times, call ahead to make a reservation as they can get very crowded. |
76 /100 Nutmeg Discount Liquors (Beer Store) 279 GREENWOOD AVE Always friendly and helpful... |
84 /100 Old Heidelberg (Restaurant) 55 STONY HILL RD A truly great restaurant that deserves as much patronage as it can get. The food is awesome, with decent prices and generous portions. One bite of fried schnitzel with brown mushroom gravy, pan-fried spaetzel and red cabbage and you’ll see what I mean. This restaurant has been rated the best German restaurant in Fairfield country two years in a row, and it is more than deserving of the honor. On top of the good truly Bavarian cuisine, there’s an awesome beer selection of pretty much every good bottled German available in the area. Taps tend to be somewhat less exciting, but they did have A.S. Fastenbier on tap once. Between the food and the German beer you can’t ask for a much more satisfying German dining experience in the area.
One final note: much to many locals’ dismay, the owner passed away suddently and untimely early in 2007. I had spoken with him several times and considered him a friend and a good man. The family intends to keep the place open in his honor. Help them and give them business... they deserve it and you will not regret it. |
74 /100 The Spot (Restaurant) 1 FRONT ST This is a bar/restaurant that has undergone several changes of management. However, the current owner has in many ways, "hit the spot". This is a popular joint for the 22-45 crowd, but most of the patrons seem to come for the macros, food and games and overlook the respectable tap selection. DFH 90 Minute and other locals are on tap all the time, with seasonal specialties rotating throughout the year. Proper glassware is used whenever possible. Food is excellent, with my personal favorites being their burger sampler and house wings (which are breaded twice, baked and fried, and are absolutely delicious). Staff is friendly though occasionally misinformed... their favorite ploy is claiming that Brooklyn Monster Ale is 15% ABV. While the overall beer variety is not stellar, the few good ones you can find on tap, combined with the good cuisine, makes it a necessary stop for the lover of heavy American food and strong American craft beer in the Bethel area. |
62 /100 Central Package Store (Beer Store) 211 GREENWOOD AVE A small store tucked inside a plaza near the local CVS. In the back is a cooler filled with a small, though occasionally worthwhile, selection of NE micros and imports. Sometimes a rare gem will be hidden there. Friendly and helpful staff. |
68 /100 Nutmeg Discount Liquors (Beer Store) 279 GREENWOOD AVE The largest liquor store in Bethel, and appropriately has a large selection of NE beers, micros, and imports as well. Victory, DFH, New England Brewing and many others can be found here. The staff I’ve encountered isn’t especially educated, but the selection is self-explanatory. |
