“Visited by myself on Saturday 20th January 2024, early afternoon. This is the closest you are going to get to an up-market American West Coast Beer Bar in Devon. Open plan with three hand-pulls (all out of action and no pump-clips) and eight or so keg lines with Beavertown and Coors to the fore. I however managed to score three new rates from the guest keg lines ( Vocation, Brewers Folly and Goodh). Liked the vibe and friendly staff, food looked interesting but I was on a mission. Clean, tidy and classy customers compared to the two Wetherspoons I visited either side of this visit!“

“Visited on a sunny afternoon; 9th August 2022. It's yet another well worn Wetherspoon outlet that has seen better times. Plenty of staff, all friendly that we met. Found one new rate, so fairly happy; didn't eat, but other people were do so. 10 hand-pulls, but mostly well known stuff. Single storey, apart from the toilets that are upstairs, outside drinking in the front, seemed a bit rough around the edges, like a lot of the customers!“

“Visited with my wife on the afternoon of 6th Dec 2019. Very impressed, it's a husband and wife set up, only the lady there on our time in the place. Two beers on tap and an interesting selection of cans & bottles for drinking in or taking away; Gin features heavily too. Had a lovely chat with the lady about beer and her ambitions for the place (and next door); I wish her and her husband well. Situated on an 'up and coming' street alongside the old 'Pannier Market'. Well worth finding if in Barnstaple.“

“Visited with my wife on 6th Dec 2019. Bog standard Wetherspoon pub, some local cask ales on, alongside the usual suspects. We ate here and enjoyed the food (you know what to expects, so it's more value for money than exciting or different). Beer quality was fine and I got two new rates while there. Not the most decorative Weherspoon's I have been in, more functional than pretty.“

“The second Wetherspoon pub to open in the North Devon town, this one is further back from the river in the commercial area of Barnstaple. In the middle of shop units in a fairly attractive building for the area, it’s a single room pub with a fair depth with a rear patio area for outdoor drinking and dining. The first part of the pub is all tables, with the service area in the middle of the right-hand wall. Here’s there’s two rows of real ale pumps, although they mostly had the same beers on both sets on my visit, and there was nothing exciting or local about anything on offer which was very disappointing. (I’m sure it must gets better when the festival ales are available though!) There were some bottled ales from local microbreweries though to compliment their other regular craft brewed bottles and keg options familiar with the Wetherspoon chain. It’s a comfortable carpeted pub with wooden fixtures and furniture in the traditional sense for this chain, although fresh looking given it’s not been open for too long at the time of writing. Had a fairly relaxed atmosphere at my teatime visit in July.“

“Facing the river Taw close to the old town bridge. I first visited this pub in 2012 and there was no second Wetherspoon in the town then, but having revisited it had the better selection of the two on my most recent visit, despite being the ’Lloyds Bar’ late night revelling pub of the chain. There’s a couple of tables out front on a restricted access road parallel to the river, so there’s not much traffic passing the pub at any time of the day. Inside there’s a thick carpet and lots of dark wood and is very cosy for it. The bar is against the left hand wall and set back into the pub with the usual couple of rows of ales available, although not as extensive as other bigger town and city pubs from Wetherspoon, nevertheless it’s decent enough when compared with others in Barnstaple. The usual keg and bottle selections are available too.“

“Large Wetherspoons in quite a modern building and set up. Pretty lairy on a Friday evening and certainly packed out. Lloyds No.1 bar but not as smart as some of them. You know what you are going to get.“

“An excellent, constantly rotating cask beer selection with help from CAMRA. Great selection of local/UK brews and some big UK Macros for the lads. Food is pretty meh, just something to soak up beer. A decent courtyard in the sun and lots of TV’s inside. Some nice wood and a smaller, queiter section if you can get in. Usually packed to the tits in the evenings though as prices are cheap and there are many deals. Not the best place to head for food and atmosphere but if you want a great beer selection look no further.“

“My Brewglobin came here many times while staying in Barnstaple, usually a couple visits a day. We went for the brew selection more so than anything else. Not the best atmosphere, but so many good memories here and beers.“
