“Took two days to stop in here as they were down for some maintenance first time we went. Selection of IOW casks was one of the best, but I was looking for a specific one that was no longer on. Missed by days, staff was friendly and helpful. Of note the area isn't the easiest to park or very friendly for those with disabilities.“

“Enjoyed our visit to this JDW on the canal. Chose Dorset Durdle Door and Loch Lomond Lost in Mosaic both of which were fine.“

“As others have said, this is not a place for beer geeks but they usually have a few real ales on and the view from the terrace is lovely, especially on a sunny day.“

“Not a beer destination by any stretch of the imagination, but if you happen to find yourself in Shanklin it would be worth your while to check out this place. While the beer range is somewhat uninspiring save for a few local options, this place does boast a fairly serious nautical theme, which might impress the novice aficionado (I can only image the decor would be a bit tired for the grizzled seamen out there). Perhaps stop in here for a quick one.“

“A fairly ho hum seaside restaurant that certainly doesn’t stand out from its neighbouring ho hum seaside restaurants. This one is perhaps slightly mediocre compared to its peers since it only has a single cask going - but it was a local beer on my visit, so that’s worth noting. And of course the live music really sets the mood here. I didn’t eat on my visit, just sat around a table with four other men as we shared a single pint. Not a destination but you’ll not have too many options if you’re in this part of town, so you might as well stop by.“

“A nice setup but the extremely poor service pretty much ruined the experience. We waited more than 45 minutes after ordering food and nothing came of it. Nobody checked on us or thought it necessary to check on the status of our orders. Pretty shabby showing, unfortunately. They’ve got a good food menu (at least in selection since we didn’t get to try much besides some starters) and a moderate selection of local beers in bottle and on cask. Fair value. Great seaside location. Shame we had a bad experience based on the service. Perhaps that’s not the norm.“

“Visited during the IoW Jolly Day. The Steamer Inn in is one of numerous venues on the Shanklin waterfront which offers some cask ale. The venue itself is a bar-restaurant-hotel combo with a decent patio area. I stopped past briefly for a beer at the bar. They offer up to 4 cask ales, one of which was from IoW (Island Wight Knight). Not a major beer destination by any measure, but if you happen to be in this part of the world it is worth stopping past. Pretty decent all-round.“

“Visited during the IoW Jolly Day 2014. This was our main port of call as it featured in the Good Beer Guide. It is pleasantly situated on the waterfront next to a few other bars and restaurants. We sat in the patio area. The Waterfront Inn offered the widest range of IoW beers that we came across in Shanklin. They had a couple on cask and about 4/5 in bottle from Goddards & Island. They were busy when we visited, but we ordered food anyway. Service was dreadfully slow and they happened to "misplace" our order so many people left hungry... The starter I did have was tasty however. If you are visiting Shanklin this is the beer must-visit, maybe not where you come for a meal.....“

“Visited briefly during IoW Jolly Day 2014. The Aqua is one of the many bars down the waterfront with ample outdoor patio seating. Has more a hotel-feel than anything else. Beer-wise they only offer 1 cask ale from the IoW, which as Mr Bois states was a re-badge of Yates Golden Bitter (still a new one for me!). They also do a bit of romantic live music if that floats your boat.... Worth popping past if you want an IoW beer with a rather pleasant view of the waterfront.“

“GBG pub on Shanklin Esplanade next door to the Steamer, visited for lunch during the IOW Jolly, 24/08/14. 5 beers of note available here, the richest pickings we found in Shanklin! 3 cask offerings from Island brewery and Goddards from the island plus Youngs bitter further supplemented by 2 bottled numbers from Goddards. As per the neighbouring venues there is a large patio out front affording views of the channel. We decided to eat here which turned into a right royal fuck up on their part. Despite ordering at 1.30pm and being told a 45 minute wait, we still hadnt received our food by almost 3, and needed to leave for our train within 15/20 minutes. Turns out the kitchen had misplaced our order. So who was looking after us at the table ... Er no one @ pisspoor service. We went hungry. Go for the ticks, try eating at one of the other establishments.“

“IOW Jolly, 24/08/14. Located between Aqua and the Waterfront Inn, the Steamer is another waterfront bar in Shanklin much like the others. Again, not a go too destination by any means but they carriesd an IOW beer on cask that was unique to the others, plus a guest from Whychwood. Largely full of folks dining on the terrace overlooking the sea during our lunchtime visit. Service was fine.“

“Just had a drink on the patio which was nice and had a great view of the boardwalk. Pleasant and old school, but a warning that they have very poor live music. Only a few beers of interest. Not worth the stop, although we didn’t eat or spend much time there.“

“Nice but dated seaside resort with a large patio, bar area and dining room. Service was good until they lost part of our food order. They should have comped our appetizers after a 2 hour wait. Beer selection is good for the area with some local bottles and taps. Prices were pretty good and food we did get was cheap and great. I would visit if I was in the area.“

“Visited on Sunday, 24/08/14, during the IOW Jolly Boys day out. Worth pointing out first off that if you are after picking up as many IOW beers/rates as possible it is worth popping into each and every one of the bars listed along the sea front at Shanklin as they all had at least one IOW cask beer unique to themselves on our visit. This place was the lesser of the 4 venues in Shanklin and is basically a hotel with a small bar and a patio overlooking the sea. I’ve included it as it carried one cask line that was serving a IOW beer that wasn’t available in the other 3 beach front stops in Shanklin. This beer did however turn out to be a re-badge, Yates Golden Bitter disguised as Shanklins Pride! Service was fine and the guy gave me some info on bottle shops. Live music kicked off on the patio as we sat and drank our pint. By no means a place to seek out but if you are after a string of IOW ticks whilst in Shanklin, worth seeing whats on cask! “

The Fishermans cottage is a charming thatched pub right on the sea front, around a 20 to 25 minute walk from the railway station, pretty much the last stop on the seafront. The place was doing a busy lunchtime trade, largely tourists, and food for family groups seemed to be the main focus during my brief visit. 2 cask ales on my visit, one from the IOW, the other doom bar. Service was fine. A nice setting and I wish we had gone here for lunch now and not the ill feted Waterfront Inn debacle!!! NB - the post code I took from the pubs website is not linking correctly on the map on RB. On the map to your right the pub is literally on the beach by the ’S’ in Shanklin Chine.“
