Mash Tun (Bar)
3 BENCH STREET
“Now called the Hoptimist Taproom, but the same as described by previous visitors reviewing this place. It's right by the underpass taking pedestrians from the town centre to the seafront avoiding the busy road into the port. This is a square shop unit micropub with a passage leading to a pleasant walled garden area, albeit a small one. Gravity cask ales with a worthwhile selection. Cider is available too.“

“Close the ASDA and Morrison's Supermarkets on the main road heading into Dover towards the sea. This is a slightly run-down public house, which is a music venue that's adorned with posters of gigs - predominantly jazz. An 'L' shaped bar has a stage at the end of its short side, with a couple of local cask brews on the larger front facing side.“

“High Street Wetherspoon in an open plan ground floor setting kitted out in the earlier traditional style of the chain. It's also relatively small for this chain's usual size of pub. As such its ale selection is limited.“

“Just off the main drag near the square and underneath a guest house. This is a cellar bar and has a traditional dimly lit appeal, serving a couple of real ales in a cosy setting. Just as good is its walled garden area, half of which has covered decking built on it, providing good shelter from the elements.“

“Visited Aug-19, when I enjoyed a fresh and very tasty beer from the local brewery Breakwater. A small but interesting variety of local and regional beers on tap which makes it the best place to visit if you've got an hour or two to spare in Dover. Very friendly service, and apparently they've got a quite active music scene.“

“Visited Aug-19: quaint and charming seaside pub with plenty of maritime bric-a-brac. Friendly service, but with a very limited choice of beers, and their own brews are frankly less than mediocre.“

“Cosy cellar bar, though it seemed almost spacious after visiting 4 Dover micropubs earlier in the afternoon. Cask Beer choice limited, though in somewhere of this size an increase in quantity could well lead to a decrease in quality. Visited 07.3.15“

“Micropub. the 4th micropub visited on our Dover dawdle. 5 cask beers available on our visit all from Kent breweries on this occasion. Friendly service & locals. Fairly thin bar area so it did seem a little cramped compared to the previous 2 micropubs visited on 07.3.15.“

“Micropub. 5 cask beers available from the stillage in cooled cellaroom. Especially good service here in that one of my friends bought the last pint of Porter which I would have chosen, so this was immediately replaced with a Dark Mild. The square shape of the drinking area made this feel the roomiest of the micropubs we visited in Dover. Visited 07.3.15“

“Micropub in Dover town centre. On our visit there were 3 cask beers available on stillage which is in a separate cooled room I believe. My beer of choice Wantsum - Golgotha (stout) was in fine condition. Some comfy armchairs unsurprisingly already occupied on our visit, and some high table & bar stools towards the rear of the pub. There is a patio at the rear and one of our local friends informed us that there are plans to brew on another part of the premises. A collection of glasses mainly from Dover & Canterbury beer festivals were on display.“

“Derived from beer notes of a few years ago. As I recall it was one of the nicest places in Dover to have a beer. I’d call it cellerish. If selection is relative, this is a place with a good selection. Compared to the Market Porter in London, not.“

“Turned up at a quiet time, but the service was great and above all the beer was excellent. Not a huge choice, but I can see this place being really lively and fun to be in when there is a live band onstage. Check it out!“

“Good amount of choice, and excellent value - however, the service left a little to be desired (not much of a clue on what they were actually serving) and it definitely lacked the charm of a family-owned or well kept brewpub. Not bad for a few cheap pints, including some local brews - but lacking a little finish.“

“Tucked away underneath a guest house, this little cubby hole is a gem. Not a whole stack of choice... but GOOD choice. Plenty of real ciders on the board too. Would gladly stay tucked away here for the day if I needed to. I’ve heard the lunch is pretty decent here, so planning on a return visit. Will update review as applicable if done.“

“Not much choice in this ferry town in the shadow of the castle. This one has a large beer selection, and that makes it worth a visit.“

“One of the very few pubs in Dover with an interesting range of beer. Besides the usual suspects they have seasonal and regional ales on tap, e.g from Ramsgate. I’ve walked past the place frequently in the past years, but was put of by the people sitting on the patio. However, the atmosphere inside is better, quite nice actually. Don’t be put off by the strange people loitering about the place, inside it’s ok and service is friendly and efficient.“

“Cosy pub hidden away in the cellar of a rather narrow house in Castle Street. Besides the cellar bar there is arestaurant and a patio. Three real ales on tap, as well as local draught cider. The pub inside is cosy and nicely decorated. One of few pubs in Dover with a selection of real ales.“
