62 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD First to rate in four years, but I doubt this place has changed one bit in that time. It's a bit of a walk to get to right on the periphery of the town centre, although we walked along the seafront round the bay which took around 20-30 mins or so.
Doors wide open on this warm late Summer afternoon, with a pool table in front of you on entry and a few grizzled locals having a game. Indeed, my immediate impression is of a basic locals pub that you wouldn't normally enter if you didn't know it was linked to North Riding brewery. 5-6 cask lines confirm this, with 4 keg lines devoted to Kernel. A handful of Lilleys ciders. Thirds available. Wasn't bowled over by the beers I had, although in hindsight I wish I bought a bottle of their 11% stout to take away. |
74 /100 Craft Bar, Scarborough (Bar) 7 NORTHWAY Visited on a day trip to Scarborough having walked 10 minutes down from the North Riding brewpub nearby. Box Shop micropub, not as small as some, decent amount of seats. Around ten keg taps on the back wall with a handful of cask up front. Various snacks and dog treats on the counter. Local options seemed limited to Brew York and Northern Monk, with various others from further afield. Double fridge with a good array of styles, some expensive offerings from the US and a sizeable amount of adjunct Imperial Stouts on the ambient shelf. Untappd verified. Decent stop off. |
74 /100 Stumble Inn (Bar) 59 WESTBOROUGH Nice little pub with a terrace. Friendly service. No wifi. They do do 3 1/3 rds of a pint for about the same price of a pint so good for ticking. Interesting selection. They're happy to give tasters. |
64 /100 130 VICTORIA ROAD Small beer shop 2ith a decent selection of beers. Friendly service. 10% discount to Camra members. |
56 /100 BellyRub (Restaurant) 130 VICTORIA ROAD Small Cafe with approx 30 bottles, mostly from Yorkshire brewers. Food not tested. |
64 /100 Scholars Bar (Bar) 6 SOMERSET TERRACE Absolutely fantastic establishment, with six ales on tap, with attentive and knowledgeable bar staff. Tastefully decorated with ample seating and a pool table that is of a high quality and enough room around so as not to be affected by those at the bar. One minor problem is the broadness of the selection. With one regular porter and the other pumps all occupied with very pale ales. Aside from that an excellent pub |
56 /100 Yorkshire Tap (Bar) CROWN CRESCENT From the outside this looked a little dodgy however once into the front conservatory and then on into the bar it cheers up somewhat. Comfortable and friendly with a small range of beers from various Breweries. Worth a look inside. |
38 /100 Cask Inn (Bar) CAMBRIDGE TERRACE Virtually empty on our visit, no atmosphere and no beers to encourage us to linger. Wasn't our thing. |
56 /100 Cellars (Bar) 35-37 VALLEY ROAD Very close and an easy walk downhill from The Valley Bar, this is a basement bar in what may be a B&B block. Reasonably large and roomy inside, friendly staff and customers. The beer range is not great unfortunately, the cider choice being a little more thought out. Not sure really, will have to visit again to make my mind up. |
68 /100 Valley (Bar) 51 VALLEY ROAD Interesting place near the top of the hill on Valley Road, it appears to be across two quite large buildings, rambling and very busy on a Saturday afternoon. It must be quite close to the local football ground as there were lots of Scarborough fans in until about 15 mins before kick off. Reasonable range of beers from a range of breweries. Well worth the effort to get there. |
34 /100 Scholars Bar (Bar) 6 SOMERSET TERRACE This pub was rammed on our visit with people watching football on the multiple t.v's or blocking the doors creating a smog of smoke. It felt rough. Very difficult to get served and we couldn't find anything of interest. Not a place for us in future visits. |
60 /100 Indigo Alley (Bar) 4 N MARINE RD At the very top end of North Marine Road, close to the town centre this is very much a music based establishment along with a crash out hostel. Loud and brassy, but friendly and welcoming, perhaps not the most comfortable place in town though. The bar is to the right on entering. It has a tie to Scarborough Brewery and their beers are to be found here. Smallish range of beers available on my visit. Worth popping in on the way back from The North Riding Brewpub. |
80 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD This destination Brewpub is, as others describe, in a somewhat run down area of town and the building reflects that, however it's not necessarily the building you are here for, it is the beers. There are two rooms available as far as I could see, an old style Public Bar, quite basic with pool table and rowdy t.v's showing football then an even older style lounge, quiet, relaxed, chatty, which is where I parked up. The beers are listed on up to date boards, a touch of complication between Cask & Keg but easy once you are in the swing. I never did get to see which bottles were available, but there were some. It's really cheap here for their own beer and thirds are available. No food but the cafe opposite I would recommend highly for a settling monster full English and mugs of tea. Dog friendly. It's well worth the effort to walk out of the town centre to get here. |
56 /100 Firk Inn (Bar) 76 FALSGRAVE ROAD This is a conversion of an old office but not really a micro pub, not sure how to describe it. It's on a main road well past the Railway Station. It is a single roomed bar, stripped out, a touch American in character, hard and loud, the Juke box is turned to maximum on older numbers. There is a limited beer range, but a couple of local cask beers are available. Not for the faint hearted. |
82 /100 Stumble Inn (Bar) 59 WESTBOROUGH This is a cracking little micro pub leaving the town from the station. There is some outside seating but on a blowy day like on our visit there is a warm, comfy and very clean interior, single roomed, it previously was a Solicitor's Office. Dog friendly. There were just 5 beer choices on our visit, but with interest, some from local breweries, some from further afield. It has to be a must visit for a trip to Scarborough imo. |
66 /100 26 VERNON ROAD Sept '21 review - 66. Revisit and things have improved a great deal in here. More guest beers, clean and tidy.
Sept '18 review - 50. We have visited this pub in the past and quite enjoyed it however it really has taken a grubby appearance now. The exterior is on a busy road and it looks run down. The beer range has become mostly Marstons offerings and there was nothing to go at. A disappointing visit. |
42 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH This is a pretty big, typical Wetherspoons close to the Railway Station. It was quite grubby on our visit with uncleared tables throughout. Breakfasts to day trippers seemed to be the big thing here as the beer choice was quite poor. Not one to return to. |
36 /100 Leeds Arms (Bar) 26 ST MARYS STREET Not really a Ratebeer place. It is a nice friendly place but the only craft beer is Timothy Taylor's landlord. You can get any of the beers here elsewhere. Not worth a visit. |
70 /100 Scholars Bar (Bar) 6 SOMERSET TERRACE Nice place. Free WiFi. 6 interesting guest tap beers. Good selection of ciders. Most beers are now 1.85 a half pint |
72 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH Close to the train station. 8 or so of guest taps to choose from. A good Spoons pub. Free WiFi of course |
54 /100 Alma Inn (Bar) ALMA PARADE A little run down but a nice enough place. 3 guest taps with a more interesting selection than the Angel. Free WiFi. |
54 /100 Angel Inn (Bar) 46 NORTH STREET Nice well lit place. Free WiFi. Only 4 taps though of run of the mill beers plus macro beers and ciders. There are better places in Scarborough. |
64 /100 Indigo Alley (Bar) 4 N MARINE RD Eccentric place with 7 craft taps and 10 or so canned craft beers. Free WiFi. A bit pricey at 1.70 a half pint but this is a seaside town. |
74 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD Lovely place a short walk from the cricket ground. Three of their own beers on tap. Seven guest beers and 4 ciders too. Free WiFi. Good prices, 1.50 a half and 1 pound for a third. |
80 /100 Stumble Inn (Bar) 59 WESTBOROUGH Nice little bar very near the station and a great selection of real ale and ciders... |
24 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH Standard spoons nothing special... |
66 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH (From my archive:) Spelled The Lord Rosebery. Big Wetherspoon’s "free house" with a bar upstairs as well as downstairs. 12 cask ales were on when I was there, quite impressive. For some reason the ales were nearly room temperature downstairs, while they were quite cold upstairs. Annoying fruit machines that no-one used when I was there, T.G. Decent food. |
70 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD A somewhat faded old large corner pub but with plenty of character and charm. The public bar was lively when we arrived early evening, but someone had decided that it was okay to have their brat screaming it’s head off so we retreated to the empty Lounge Bar, where we were later joined by several other people. To be honest the selection is a disappointment. It’s a long drive here and to find only 4 North Riding beers on tap and one in a bottle is frustrating. I was hoping for 6 or 7 on tap and a half dozen bottles. Oh well. The North Riding beers had good company - including a Kernel IPA. The service was efficient and reasonably friendly. I’m glad I finally got a chance to visit the home of this fantastic brewery just a little gutted that more of their beers were not available. |
84 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD Nice pub at Scarboroughs, North Bay. Looks a little tired from the outside, but very much alive inside. They had two of their own brewpub beers on and a couple from their brewery on the other side of town. They also had three keg lines, and decent selection of bottles, defiantly worth a visit. |
82 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD Flying visit during family trip to nearby Peasholm Park naval battle re-enactment. Main bar with around 8 handpulls including many of the brewpub beers, some keg taps and bottles. Separate lounge bar with 4 ciders. Highly recommended, a shame I had no time to stay longer on this visit. |
88 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD 3rd trip to Scarborough in the last 4 years, and this place never disappoints. Now has 8 cask beer lines, 2 keg and 2 ciders. Roughly half the cask lines were NRB own brews most nights. A surprise guest keg was Lagunitas Equinox, otherwise solidly local fare - York, BAD Co, Imperial of Mexborough, Brass Castle, Revolutions, etc. etc. Friendly staff & locals. NRB bottles also available for take-out. All beers & ciders available in thirds, some for as little as 85p a go! Lounge bar could do with a spruce up, but otherwise a must-do if you’re in the area. |
84 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD Been here a couple of times lately, and it’s becoming a favourite. Dog friendly. People friendly. Beer friendly. I rate North Riding beers highly and to get them on home soil is a treat. They rarely disappoint. The locals round the bar seem to talk mostly beer, and seem to embrace all its variants. If it wasn’t for the two hour plus drive that the Missus has to make on the way home, I’d come here a lot more often! |
72 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH Nice Victorian building, characterfull place. Friendly owners, decent prices. Food is ok. Some very nice cask ales, also a lot of choice. Nice place to visit. |
56 /100 Valley (Bar) 51 VALLEY ROAD There’s nothing too special about this place. 6 handpumps were on during our visit, 2 of which had beers from the Scarborough brewery. The bottled selection was a small line up of the usual Belgians. Worth nipping in for a pint on your way to the North Riding Brewpub. |
80 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD Amazing find in Scarborough. It looks like a traditional British boozer, but the beer selection is fantastic. Included in the cask selection was a big IPA from the in house brewery and a imperial stout from Brass Castle. The kegs had beer from the Kernal, Brew by Numbers and Magic Rock. They also had a selection of bottled beers, but I didn’t see what they had. A must visit for beer lovers in Scarborough. |
56 /100 Cask Inn (Bar) CAMBRIDGE TERRACE This pub was pretty packed when I visited in Spring 2014 as the United-Liverpool game was being shown, although there was plenty of room as it’s fairly big with different areas to sit on all sides of the central bar. It’s a traditional pub in style, maybe due an update in some of its fixtures and fittings but it has a decent enough cask ale range which includes a guest or two. All were from established breweries though when I was there. The building itself looks more like one of the houses that surround this place just off the main road south out of the town than a pub. The front garden has been concreted over and is full of outdoor seating and it catches the sun all day if it is out. It’s a little bit of a trek up the hill from the Valley Gardens but manageable. |
64 /100 Alma Inn (Bar) ALMA PARADE A short walk north of the station, it’s at the end of a the first parallel street to that of the main road on its eastern side. This is a slightly rundown looking pub that’s traditional in design with a predominantly wooden design in terms of fixtures, fittings and furniture, however it has plenty of character with a very friendly clientele. It has a collection of interlinked rooms that are all open plan with the service area about central in the building. The rear room includes a pool table. There’s a row of real ale pumps on the small ball with a couple of permanent options and a few guests that rotate. |
62 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH Close to the station, where the main shopping area begins - high up in the town away from the seafront, this Wetherspoon pub is quite light and airy with fixtures and fittings in tune with many of the older establishments in this chain. It’s a comfortable traditional pub affair with an almost square room as you enter, with the bar on the right. It’s bright and airy at the front with its large glass windows but stretches back enough where the natural light is usurped by a more artificial brightness. In season it gets its fair share of tourists although given the police were called to disperse some overly drunk locals when I was there it clearly has plenty of regulars here too. |
70 /100 Indigo Alley (Bar) 4 N MARINE RD Cosy pub, bit out of the center of Scarborough. Also a hostel, we stayed here for one night. Small beer list but some good local craft beers and ciders. Not a place you should necessarily go to, but good to have a drink if you’re in the neighbourhood. |
90 /100 Valley (Bar) 51 VALLEY ROAD A very fast visit a month ago (20 minutes). A nice range of real ales from micro brerweries and very friendly land lady. And the beers were in an exellent condition (4.9.2012). |
54 /100 Lord Rosebery (JDW) (Bar) 85-87 WESTBOROUGH A fairly typical Wetherspoon’s pub in a converted building – in this case a capacious and handsome late Victorian building that was first a Liberal club opened by the eponymous Lord Rosebery, then a medical centre and lastly a department store with a polished wood gallery. It was fairly quiet just after seven on a Friday evening. The draw for us was the advert for four Wold Top beers on or coming soon but, alas, the service was rather slow and we had a train to catch.

50 /100 Tap & Spile (Bar) 94 FALSGRAVE ROAD A pleasant enough pub but not a beer destination.
The Tap and Spile is on one of the main roads leading out of town from the railway station. It could be quite cosy but the room where we sat had a nice flagstone floor and an ugly lathe and plaster ceiling without the plaster (it was filled with that expanding foam that oozes like a pustule). The beer was fairly ordinary as well, but the music was good. Unfortunately, although the service was prompt, it wasn’t very welcoming. If a person doesn’t hear or understand what I say, particularly if I’m planning to spend some of my hard earned cash in their establishment, I expect something other than a scowl and a grunted “eh?” in response. Perhaps the barman was just in a bad mood because he was anticipating a busy night ahead – I noticed that a charity entertainment night was due to start at 9pm.

68 /100 Valley (Bar) 51 VALLEY ROAD A plain, no nonsense bar with a pleasingly wide selection of cask ales and bottles.
Despite its inauspicious location in the semi-basement of a block of holiday flats, the Valley bar is well worth a visit for its interesting beer range and friendly locals. We found some new cask beers there, including one from Scarborough Brewery (apparently it’s run by the son of the Valley’s owner), and there’s also an impressive bottle list of over 100 mainly Belgian beers at reasonable prices.

68 /100 Cellars (Bar) 35-37 VALLEY ROAD A comfortable ground floor / basement bar in a group of very tall terraced houses along the Valley Road.
There were only three casks on when we went into the Cellars but more were added at regular intervals when the landlord arrived to help out the barmaid and the place really went up in my estimation during the time we were there. Most of the beers were from smallish, mainly local(ish) breweries. In addition to the seven hand pumps there are about five keg taps but they decidedly take second place to the cask beer.
The bar has a low ceiling and almost everything is green – the carpet, the stools and the table inlays. There’s a nice old slate fireplace and a rack of old wooden golf clubs in the main room. The food looked reasonable but we didn’t eat there.

40 /100 Angel Inn (Bar) 46 NORTH STREET A very ordinary town pub lacking in atmosphere.
From the outside the Angel looks promising but inside it’s disappointing. It has a formica feel, squidgy carpets and no heart. Chris thought it “no great shakes”; I thought it dire.
Mid afternoon on a Friday it was very busy and noisy, not least because there were several loud televisions showing horse racing, even outside at the back where there’s a rather scruffy, unkempt flagstone patio. No wonder the barman was so dour.
The beer was OK but nothing special. They have six hand pumps but the selection was limited to Bombadier, Tetleys, Yorkshire Terrier and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. We both opted for the Copper Dragon, which was served in Carling glasses.

56 /100 Leeds Arms (Bar) 26 ST MARYS STREET A friendly local in the old part of town.
The Leeds Arms is on a steep side street leading up from the old harbour in a part of town that feels worlds away from the seaside resort. The choice of beers wasn’t huge – there are around five keg taps and three of the five hand pumps were off leaving just Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and Timothy Taylor Landlord – but what it lacks in beer choice it certainly makes up for in friendliness and cosy surroundings.
The pub has a nautical theme. It’s stuffed with fishing nets, lifebelts, oars and old black and white photographs showing the harbour in its heyday, packed with boats. There’s an interesting framed newspaper clipping about the day big game fishing returned to Scarborough alongside some photos of locally caught tuna towering over their captors. There’s also a huge stuffed lobster in a glass case and, to keep him (or her) company, an equally large crab.
Incongruously, there was heavy metal / guitar led rock playing in the background.

80 /100 161-163 NORTH MARINE ROAD A friendly brewpub with a constant stream of exceptional new beers.
The North Riding Brew Pub has won the CAMRA award for town pub of the year four years running and it’s not difficult to see why. The pub was taken over by Stuart and Karen Neilson a few years ago and since then they’ve gradually been renovating it.
It’s a large, imposing building just back from the windy bank overlooking North Bay and the headland. The public bar is fairly down to earth, with lots of trophies and a small collection of autographed cricket bats. This is Yorkshire, after all! At the other side of the bar there’s a comfortable, more plush lounge and they do accommodation upstairs.
The brewery was opened in January 2011 and over fifty beers were produced in the first year. There are two 90 gallon tanks, the size having been determined by the size of the hatch from outside through which the equipment had to be passed down into the cellar. I know this because Stuart (the brewer / owner) noticed our interest in the beers and kindly invited us to look round the brewery. He likes pale, hoppy beers and certainly doesn’t stint on the hops, eschewing British ones for more flavourful varieties from abroad. All the beers we tried were in good condition and very tasty indeed, including an early sample of Tasmanian Devil which was expected to come out at around 6.8% abv. Apparently the regular customers like them too and the place really seems to be thriving.
Visiting the North Riding Brew Pub was one of the highlights of our day out in Scarborough (a day trip from York) and I’ll certainly make a detour to go there again when we’re in that part of the country as well as looking out for their beers elsewhere.

90 /100 Cellars (Bar) 35-37 VALLEY ROAD Great pub, good real ales and live music, friendly as well, enjoyed our little weekend here and this place really added to it. |
66 /100 Cellars (Bar) 35-37 VALLEY ROAD Fairly traditional pub, which just happened to be located on the ground floor of the place I was staying (an amazing err coincidence). About 5 ales on handpull - all good local stuff. Both nights I went they had live music on, which may or may not be a bonus for you - but either way, it certainly meant the place was very busy. A handy spot indeed. |
86 /100 Valley (Bar) 51 VALLEY ROAD Really good pub - unexpectedly good. Well kept local ales on handpump and a good range of mainly well known Belgian bottles, often with the right glasses. Nice decor, not stylish per se, just homely and clean. Also benefits from being just up the road from another good real ale venue, the Cellars. |
