“Enjoyed our visit yesterday to this popular real ale bar, Well worth a visit to check the selection on the bar. We enjoyed beers from Beatnitz, North Riding and Blue Bee breweries.“

“Last stop of the night on 18th December 2015. Nice old boozer handily next to Langsett Rd tram stop. Plenty of room in the place, nice traditional decor. Stopped serving food by the time we arrived. Beer range was decent. Service good and prices good. Would go back there as had a good Sunday lunch in the past. Recommended“

“Have stayed twice at the hotel (once to attend football at Hillsborough and once for the speedway at Owlerton as very handly for both). Each time very impressed. Accommodation is comfortable, fairly basic but great value. Food is good quality, and value. Beers are well kept with a good range of ales both from the brewery and guests. Wood St Brewery bottles available to take home. Clientel very welcoming to non-locals, with a good atmosphere and very friendly vibe to the place, The owners and staff are very nice people too. Very much recommended.“

“A good choice of cask ales - both their own and a few guests, usually mainly local. Food good basic English traditional and generous portions. The tram passes right outside.“

“Stayed here in 2009 for Doddy’s 40th bash. Trad boozer with a conservatory style extension at the rear. Beers from their own (Crown Brewery at the time) and other guests. Food (and drink) was excellent vfm and good portions. Well recommended as a B and B too - cracking fry up in the morning. We drank here from around 4pm to 7pm and the place was beginning to fill up nicely by the time we left. 2 to 3 miles from city centre. Great little pub.“

“Nice place which is a pub, hotel and brewery. They have 3 or so of their own beers on tap and a few decent guest beers. Worth visiting.“

“Quite an amazing place out in the sticks of Sheffield. Eight craft ales are available from either the in-house brewery or local breweries. A really awesome place with super beers and great service. I stayed over in the hotel and I would recommend that to everyone. It’s worth the trip over here and an overnight stay in the hotel. The rooms are clean and very good value.“

“Fine reasonably modernised bar at the top of a fine pub crawl. Was a good place to spend a night a few years back, accommodation was excellent. Beer choice was great (as it is in most of Sheffield).“

“The first stop on my fantastic Sheffield pub crawl. On top (or certainly quite a long way up) of a big hill, reached by tram. When I arrived this had recently changed hands and is now called The Hillsborough. Also it is no longer the home of the Crown Brewery, but of Wood St brewery (another name change). Great pub, with fantastic outdoor balcony, which allows you to sup your beer and stare at the nearby ski slope. It’s like an English apres ski experience! Good beer, great location.“

“This pub is located in the upper Don Valley and was our final destination on our valley pub crawl. Home of the Crown brewery which occupied five of the hand pumps leaving three more for different guest ales. A likable modern, multiroom pub with wooden tables and chairs. Partly crowded early on a Friday eve. Great in its own way.
The Valley of beer trail in Sheffield was one of my best crawl, ever. During 11 hours Finn and I visited nine pubs, including Bankers Draft and Wig & Pen in the city centre, and consumed more than 35 different beers, all of them real ales hand pulled from cask (on the first Friday of October 2010). “

“Relaxing little pub with excellent value pints (£2.50). The Stannington Stout was my personal favourite. Would definitely come back if I’m ever in Sheffield again. Second visit was as good as the first, with 5 Crown beers - the Stout remains my favourite though Samuel Berry’s was a close second.“

“[RBESG 2009]. It has a brewery in their basement, a pub in the ground floor and the hotel rooms upstairs ! This is where I stayed at RBESG. What more can you ask for. Their beers were also quite good, the food very nice and the service excellent. The rooms cheap and clean. Will def visit again!“

“Good food, decent to good beers, various guest ales and friendly albeit a bit slowish service in this pub and hotel. Cheap, at least by Dutch standards. Absolutely worth a visit.“

“Visited during RBESG 09. Bright pub, a bit sober considering the lack of decoration and ambiance, but their own beers more than make up for that. Decent seatings. Good pub food at low prices. Definitely worth a visit when in Sheffield.“

“Stayed here two nights in May and had a good time. While the place is a slight bit lacking in ambiance (what ambiance it does have is provided by the staff), the quality of service more than makes up for it.“

“This was the second pub on our valley of beer crawl, we’d started at the New Barrack Tavern. The Hillsborough had a few people in despite the relatively early time of our arrival 12 Noon. We were greeted by a friendly bunch of staff, the beers of which there were about six to eight to choose from were excellent. Beers available included three of their own and three guests, Stannigton Stout was my favourite. A great little place well worth a visit.“

“Very friendly and civilised brewpub in a city that excels for good beer, with a basic but comfortable main bar and a lovely conservatory at the back. The pub’s own Crown beers are decent and interesting (without being outstanding), there are a handful of lesser-known beers from other micros, and a small selection of Belgian and German beers too nothing out of the ordinary but welcome nonetheless. Accommodation is comfortable and excellent value for money book in advance as it’s often snapped up. Outside the city centre but conveniently located about 100m from a tram stop about 10mins from the centre on the tram line towards Hillsborough.“

“this is a good way to start or end a ’valley of beer’ crawl. comfortable and friendly pub. Bar features 4-5 of their own beers, plus a few guests, however there are always 6-8 ready beers in the cellar, which are available at all but the busiest times. a good range of reasonably priced food made with fresh local ingredients“

“The furthest pub I’ve been to in Sheffield, at the top of one of the surrounding hills. Lots of beer fanatics seemed to be hanging at the bar during our visit. Excellent terrace with a relatively nice view on Sheffield and surroundings. Solid selection, different from what you’ll find in other Sheffield’s pubs. Still, it’s a bit further than most, so if you only have a couple of hours, it’s hard to pick one to skip, but this could be one in spite of being a high quality spot.“

“A good place to stay if you’re touring Sheffield’s many real ale pubs. Has it’s own festivals and beers brewed on site. Always a good range of guest ales and the friendly staff go out of theie way to ensure you get your beers, on numerous occasions they have told me what’s on in the cellar and would run down and get them for you if they’re ready to drink which is a bonus.“

“A newcomer to the scene, the Hillsborough only opened in the late 90s. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable, and the bar serves 8 real ales with around 3 from their own Crown brewery downstairs. The bar’s opening hours have been extended to the standard 12:00 with positive results. The pub frequently holds beer festivals in the conservatory. Was sold in late 2003 to Edale brewery, with subsequent reduction in beer range and quality, but was sold again in 2006, and is now much improved and has restarted brewing too. Beers from the cellar are possible at quieter times.“
