Came here on 9.10.2017. Dark belgium beer bar / restaurant located in Georgetown. Estimate they have around 50 Belgium beers on tap (some Belgium style US beers included). Had a De Ranke - XX Bitter, De La Senne - Schieven IPA and a Fantome - La Dalmatienne. All were in great shape. A good selection of some rare Belgium breweries, but on the other hand some of the big names are completely missing. A good Belgium beer place for sure, but nothing outstanding.

Dimly lit, and a bit more compact than expected in the austere, serious-looking downstairs bar (more open, casual environment with televisions upstairs). The food did not disappoint - casual but refined Flemish and Belgian informed bar food. Obviously there is a true wealth of options here for beer, certainly more so than anywhere else in the U.S. In close competition with the most impressive lists in the world.
At this point, things get interesting. Four of my personal most favorite breweries in the world are staples on tap here, in De La Senne, De Ranke, Blackberry Farm, and Thiriez. None of the tap pours I had on this visit were quite up to that particular beers normal standard, sadly. The lines were not flawed - the beers just seemed tired, in a hard to describe how or why kind of way. Diving into that massive bottle list, it became clear that freshness was not going to be possible with many selections. We received excellent service from the bartender, who checked freshness levels on several bottles for me and also generously gave us a brief tour of their keg cellar. He commented that the bar has not had to order De La Senne since they opened, so all those bottles are quite old at this point; again this is not the fault of the bar but it remains true nonetheless. His opinion was that the bottle list (and the excellent, thoughtful wine list) were generally under-appreciated (ignored) by the Georgetown clientele. This seems likely, and a major bummer.
Of course, I hold none of these disappointments directly against the establishment, as it seems to me a nebulous problem. I am unsure of how sustainable the deep bottle lists of D.C. - a staple of the bar scene at large here - can be. As it stands here, most positively, there are a lot of fun old lambics that are next to impossible to get in a bar in the U.S. Most negatively, there is also a staggering amount of old bottles that might have been better fresh, but at this point are stuck waiting for demand to catch up with supply.
Regardless of all this, the Sovereign supplies a higher quantity of world-class beer on tap than anywhere I have been outside of Europe. The rest of my thoughts here are definitely tertiary to this fact.
Parking is on the street and is difficult; on a Monday night I felt lucky we were only three blocks away. My wife and I had dinner and beers in the bottom level. This place is dimly lit high end restaurant. Service was quite good. The lambic selection is probably the best in the US. I had the curry mussels and the desert waffle which were quite nice. Food prices are pretty good and beer prices are going rate due to rarity. If you like lambic, go check out this place.
Visited on a thursday evening around 8 PM. The place is located at the end of an alley on Wisconsin Avenue. There is a small sign on the sidewalk that indicates they are down there, but I couldn’t really see it until I got past a piece of construction equipment. Well hidden. Inside was fairly swanky. There are two floors. Both have the same drafts lines and bottles available. I opted for the lower level because it looked like it had plenty of seats at the bar available. Service at the bar was quick and attentive. I promptly had beer in hand and a glass of water. My only knock on service was they let my water run out early on and never refilled it. I would have liked it to been topped off throughout the visit. The draft list was predominantly belgian beers, but there were some other countries represented. They were all belgian styles, though. They have both full pour and sample sizes available in all drafts. They had an extensive bottle list as well. I perused it, but ultimately decided to stick to drafts. Bottles, seemingly regardless of which you picked, were very highly priced. All things considered, I loved this place. I would put it right up there with Churchkey for the DC scene.
Stopped in before wedding reception and was very impressed. You walk down an alley and when you enter there is a bar upstairs or downstairs. We went downstairs into a dimly lit room that had an excellent ambience and taplist. Lots of sours on tap during my visit. Tap list focused heavily on Belgians but included a nice selection from other areas. I did not peruse the bottle list. Staff was knowledgeable.
Stop in during a stopover through DC yesterday. In a good part of town, with the bar back down an alley way away from the fray. The setup is nice, like an old school pallor feel. Large beer selection of Belgium on draft and massive bottle list of all Belgiums including a good bit of lambic of different vintages. Had some snacks which were quite good and the service was right on point. Overall a great Belgian beer bar in the States if you love Belgians. I know it is touted as that but hard to compete with their peers over in Belgium for the same quality of Belgian overall. Definite visit while in DC.
Really nice bar / restaurant in Georgetown. Enjoyed a fine meal here and lots of greet beer with Travlr and jc1762. Not very crowded, excellent food and a very impressive tap list and awe-inspiring bottle list. Very good all around.
Another great Churchkey-related spot, this one focusing in on Belgian styles and beers. Great service in a Belgian-themed place. Always good stuff on tap, especially for a Belgo-phile like myself. Great service. I prefer the upstairs bar personally, but there are two nice bars here. Like Churchkey, they do 4 oz pours of everything. Also a fair amount of events in its short history so far. Now that I work close to hear I anticipate more visits.
Luckily for me, The Sovereign opens 11.00 on Saturdays. While my wife and the girls did some serious shopping in Wisconsin Ave, dad was allowed to take a break. I sat at the bar downstairs, the upstairs bar was empty at noon. A glas of cold water was given "as a starter" while I studied the amazing draft list. Mostly Belgian beers but about 20 American craft beers, all Belgian inspired or IPA. All beers served in 4 oz at $3-6,50. Just ask! Nice service and relaxing music (easy listening and jazz) Most people were eating lunch, I was a lone drinker. And, again these hot days in DC, a t-shirt is enough outside (and of course a pair of trousers...) but can be freezing cold inside. Had beer from Spencer Trappist, Blackberry Farm, Prairie and Tired Hands. I wish I had more time to spend! (Visited June 25th 2016)
