Legendary Bruges beer bar situated along a side street pretty much in the city centre. Cosy, classic old-style ambience, fairly small, but made no difference to us. Been quite a few times over the years and always warmed to its unfussy charm and attentive service. Beers on tap during our visit included Rodenbach Alexander (which tasted excellent) and an unfamiliar spicy blonde from De Koninck. Beer mennu contains a good range of classics and newer brewery upstarts. Always busy during our visits, including today on a Monday early evening, but tables seem to come available all the time. Yep, always a favourite.
Fun beer destination with lots of beer signs on the walls. Service was initially overly attentive when the place was quiet, and then non-existent when the place filled up. No tap water available, which was annoying after a day of walking. The selection here is good, but prices are pretty high and the beers are not rare enough to justify it (though this was true of a few bars I went to in Belgium). Beers you can pick up for 1 euro are on sale here for 6. The beers that are difficult to find are disproportionately expensive. Look, I’m realistic – all bars mark up beers – but there’s a limit to what I’m willing to pay for ’ambiance’. The fact of the matter is that this place is OK for tourists but, if I lived in Bruges, I would never come here. All the good places I’ve been to made me want to come back, and this place didn’t. It’s the sort of place that would be OK to pop into just to say you’ve seen it, and then leave and have a few beers in Le Trappiste instead. (56)
I first visited in the 90s. Good to see it’s hardly changed. I love the beer menu by region, and there are lots of West Flanders beers. In fact there are lots from each province! The taps tend to change but always good quality. This bar deserves all the accolades. The only downside is it often gets too busy!
Visited on 10th December 2016. 2 roomed venue a few mins out of the centre of Bruges. Got there for opening and place was already packed. It’s got a lovely feel to the place, a proper locals boozer feel to it, just nice and traditional. A good range of beer on tap and in bottle. I had the beer recommended in BlackHaddocks ratebeer review on the menu, it was decent stuff too. Nice friendly staff were offering us another drink straight away too. Value was good too. Really liked this place and one not to miss in Bruges.
