Top New Brewers In The World

January 29, 2014

These are the top brewers who started collecting their first ratings on or after January 1, 2013. Considering there were more than 2600 new world wide brewers registered this past year at RateBeer, these ten are an extremely elite bunch of the freshman class. We look forward to many great beers from them and wish them the very best.

  • 10
    Pressure Drop
    London, England
    United Kingdom

One of three UK brewers to make our list, London-based Pressure Drop has found a particularly receptive audience for their bottle-conditioned Stokey Brown and Street Porter. Their meandering Pale Fire series (the beer world could use more Nabokov references, let’s be honest) has employed impact hops from Mosaic to Citra—plus the mysterious Hop X.

    Modern Times
    San Diego, California
    United States

Modern Times hit the RateBeer radar early, with Blazing World making an appearance in one of our earliest RateBeer Weekly Friday Field Guides. Cans of this and their generously hopped Fortunate Islands are already near the tip-top of their respective style categories. Like the brewery itself, their beers tend to commemorate previously attempted utopias.

    Trappistenbrouwerij De Kievit
    Zundert
    Netherlands

Just a few kilometers north of the Belgian border, the Trappist monks of Abdij Maria Toevlucht released their first beer, Zundert, late last year. The monastery itself dates back over a century.
  • 7
    Rhinegeist Brewery
    Cincinnati, Ohio
    United States

Based in Cincinnati’s recently revitalized Over-the-Rhine district, Rhinegeist is led by head brewer Jim Matt (who previously served as quality manager over at Sun King). The brewery has found success with fresh, self-distributed, dry-hopped goodness like Truth and Spikelet.
  • 6
    Trillium Brewing Company
    Boston, Massachusetts
    United States

Trillium’s Fort Point Pale Ale, brewed with Columbus and Citra hops, has been receiving highly favorable early reviews. Newer releases like Cuvee De Tetreault (black currants; barrel aged) aren’t far behind. Their first bottles, a treatment of Pot & Kettle, just landed in December.
  • 5
    Weird Beard
    London, England
    United Kingdom

Weird Beard supports the long-standing commingling of great beer and beards. Their Mariana Trench pale ale (U.S. plus N.Z. hops) and Fade to Black IPA, among others, are earning top marks in their style groups. Name highlights include Hit the Fairy Lights and Shark Biscuit.
  • 4
    J.W. Sweetman
    Dublin
    Ireland

This craft brewery pays homage to John William Sweetman Esq., an esteemed figure within Dublin history. Their core lineup includes a well-regarded Irish Red Ale, Porter, and Weiss, plus a Pale Ale brimming with Cascade hops (for good measure). Not one beer over 5%.
  • 3
    Bevog Brewery
    Bad Radkersburg
    Austria

All four of this brewery’s current releases—Tak (pale ale), Ond (smoked porter), Kramah (IPA), and Baja (oatmeal stout)—have been very highly regarded by our reviewers. Bevog’s bottles carry similarly mystifying label creatures. To the brauhaus from Bad Radkersburg.
  • 2
    Siren
    Finchampstead, Berkshire, England
    United Kingdom

So many top Siren beers to choose from. Ryesing Tides. The 2.8%-ABV Half Mast QIPA. Bones of a Sailor Part 1… Head brewer Ryan Witter-Merithew's extensive brewing travels have already helped bring forth collaborations with Hill Farmstead, Cigar City, Pizza Port…
  • 1
    Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company
    Gilbert, Arizona
    United States

The craft beer scene in Arizona has been especially exciting to watch as of late, and Arizona Wilderness has helped lead that charge. Learn about our Top New Brewery here.
