UPDATED: JAN 22, 2021 A dark reddish brown bock with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with dark fruits, licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with dark fruits, molasses, alcohol warmth, light rum and smooth. Bottle from 2012

22oz bottle. Batch #1. Pours a slightly reddish deep brown with a small beige head. Aroma is big bourbon, vanilla, molasses, wood, and toffee. Taste is bourbon, raisins, some chocolate, yeast, molasses, light vanilla, some toffee, and just a little wood. Boozy finish. Some wood and vague fruitiness lingers, as well. Medium body. Not-quite-medium carbonation. Sticky, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel. Bottle says it was brewed at Schmaltz Brewing.

(22oz bottle) Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, toffee, raisins, oak, and plum. Flavor of bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, toffee, caramel, and oak.

Pours a nice deep golden brown color. Aromas of rich dark malts, chocolate, fruit, and a hint of smoke. Flavor is rich with a lot of flavors to be found, chocolate, dark fruit, smoke, coffee, and I swear a hint of licorice.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Randall’s back in 2011 or so with the regular vintage. The intent was to try them side-by-side sometime in the last five years but it didn’t quite work out that way. I finally opened the regular and it had started to oxidize (duh) so I opened this one tonight. Pours a barely cloudy reddish amber with a small off-white head that settles into an uneven, lasting film and ring. The aroma and the flavor are basically identical - brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate, raisins, pecans, walnuts, toasted oak, dates, earth, and dry leaves. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, toasty mouthfeel. Drinks like a barrel-aged barley wine. I’m stunned at how well this has held up. The regular was okay, so I figured this one would be well past its prime. If that’s the case, this further cements Shmaltz’s reputation as the most overlooked world-class barrel aging program.

(bottle - 22 oz - 2012 vintage) Copper pour with a thin tan head. Incredibly sweet aroma. Lots of malts and vanilla from the barrel. Good hint of the bourbon as well. Flavor is a sweet and bourbon bomb. Tons of sweet and caramel malts and a lot of oak, vanilla and bourbon.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with paper thin beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is candy sugar, wood, bourbon, vanilla. Thin mouth, boozy, sugar malt, very sweet, wood, nice boozy finish, very nice.

Tawny pour. Sizable tan head. Little lacing. Big malty aroma. Notes of chocolate and vanilla. Slightly grainy. Grainy taste, malty, cereal. Not bad.

A nice brew, has to be one of shmaltz brewing best beers. Definitely recommended for the flavors and style.

I love Buffalo Trace bourbon. That should be the whole review, but I’ll expand. Didn’t know this was aged in BT barrels when i bought it, but damn was i happy about it. the beer exists only to accentuate the awesomeness of buffalo trace. maybe the most bourbon prevelant beer i’ve had, so a bit of a one trick pony, but damn, was it tasty!"
