COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The nose is filled with complex notes of figs, fruitcake, port, licorice, cherry, raisin chocolate, black toffee, coffee and caramel, while it tastes deliciously thick and chewy, with great complexity showing notes of fruits, coffee-roastiness, molasses, licorice, and toffee. This beer is a meal!
Editor's note. The draught version is 9% abv, but also contained under this listing. Edit #2 The bottles are now 9% as well (from 7%)

mmmbeer (1693) - Austin, Texas, USA - MAR 5, 2024
UPDATED: MAR 5, 2024 1 pint .9 oz bottle served in a tumbler- poured an almost nontransparent black color with dark maroon tinting, white ring about the vessel for a head, zero lacing. Aroma of caramel and hops. Hits the mouth with a light body, malt is damn near the perfect feel for the style, middle holds up well, finish is sweet with cloves intertwined with it. Pretty damn good!

climberbob (906) - Annandale, Virginia, USA - NOV 12, 2023
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2023 Bottle labeled as “Historic Recipe Curator”. Dark Ruby red almost black. Minimal to no head. Aroma of candy sugar and plums with some cola. Similar taste - very sweet. Almost too sweet. Tastes like drinking flat cola soda. So so. Not one to go back for.

ClarkVV (13372) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - NOV 11, 2023
UPDATED: NOV 11, 2023 Can, undated, bc OEC's 20 billion dollar brewhouse can't afford a date stamper, apparently. Drunk 11/10/23. Clear, mahogany-dark amber. Small, dark beige, charred tan head. Bready, crunchy, crusty. Not much in the way of bright acidity or deep malt. Same flavors. Way too much specialty malt. Bready, crusty, drying. Medium-light bodied. Thinner than it should be. Caramel and brown bread lingers...

CloakedDagger (9922) - - SEP 25, 2023
UPDATED: SEP 25, 2023 Bottle 33 cl. Comes as 'Ettaler Curator 1609' at 7,0% bought at the Kloster in July '23. Why a 7% Dunkler Bock is aliased to a 9% Doppelbock totally beats me - a clear and obvious mistake. Pours a clear, dark orangey brown with a small, creamy, beige head. Amazing aroma of dark, dried fruits and molasses - almost like a Quadrupel. Rich, sweet molasses, dark dried fruits slight roast and chocolate with sufficient bitterness. World class Dunkler Bock. 250923

tfontana (5546) - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - SEP 3, 2023
UPDATED: SEP 3, 2023 Bottle pour from The Beer Store, Salem (label has this as 'Historic Recipe' but description is exactly the same so I am assuming same recipe and including here). It's a clear cola brown-mahogany with fizzy tan head quickly fading to ring, light sparkle. Aroma is strong caramel, raisin, fig, brown sugar, cherry, toffee, light licorice. Taste follows aroma with less licorice. Medium bodied and smooth with mild alcohol warmth. Good complexity and smooth. Very nice!

snoworsummer (10045) - baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUN 12, 2023
UPDATED: JUN 12, 2023 Can at the Rathskeller. Pours clear bright nut brown with a thin, fizzy head. Tastes like nutty malt, dark fruit, raisin, and toffee. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like raisin, toffee, and nutty malt.

NikkTwist (6115) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 20, 2023
UPDATED: APR 20, 2023 Draft at Bru Craft. Very dark brown/black pour with a ring of ivory foam. Complex fruity dark malts. Figs. Raisins. Prunes. Light coffee/chocolate. Molasses. Toffee caramels. Liquorice. Charcoal. Leather. Tobacco. Flavors you might expect to find in a Belgian Christmas brew, but there is still an underlying sense of bread crust to tell you it's a Doppelbock. Very good!

drpimento (7525) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 5, 2023
UPDATED: FEB 5, 2023 Aromas are dark malt, roast, wet grain, with a little bit of molasses and caramel. Flavors are somewhat similar to nose, on the sweet side with molasses coming out more. Good carbonation and some bitter to balance. Medium body and slightly sweet finish. Good doppelbach.
Earlier Rating: 3/24/2010 Total Score: 4.4
Mmmmm mm! Gooood beer! Poured a beautiful huge tan foamy frothy textured head and lots of lace. Color is a rich ruby tinged mahogoney. Aroma is malty and dark ripe fruit. Flavor’s that and a lot more: pick out figs, dates, plums, prunes, raisins, sweet cherries, a little pear, lots of malt, a little roasty, and booze at the end. Body is very good as is the carbonation. Almost a session, but ya better be careful.
