COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our version of the classic London ESB style was put together by myself and Bob Hudson when he came to New Zealand for the first time in 1998. We were on holiday in Northland and had just completed an exhaustive internal assessment of the style (in the sun) when the recipe struck us. Brewed with Maris Otter and two other darker malts from Simpsons it has generous additions of classic UK hops throughout the boil. The resulting ale is deep copper-red with full bitter/sweet flavours. There are powerful aromatic hops on the nose and palate. A pint for supping not quaffing.

UPDATED: NOV 3, 2019 Pint on tap at Galbraith's. Golden bronze still beer with a thin creamy white head. Nose is caramel malt and toasted bread. There's some solid sequential lacing. Good body, smoooooooth. Taste is fruity, sweet, toffee. Finish is peppery with bitter lemon and more toffee. Amazing Bitter, one of the best I've ever had.

beer-yum (3705) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - SEP 26, 2018
UPDATED: SEP 27, 2018 Enticing malty floral aroma in a tan brown pour. Hop forward balance with a dried fruit biscuit body and finish. An excellent local (NZ) example of the style (ESB) and one well worth seeking out at the source.

On handpull at Galbraith’s. Pours red brown without head. Smooth low carbonated body. Nuts, dried figs, plums, yeasty. Pretty decent.

[8415-20160531] Cask. Light maple taffy malt aroma. Slightly hazy, dark orange red body with a quick foamy off-white head. Light corn and toasted malty sweet grains flavour has a noticeable black tea bag note in the finish. Medium body. Average. (6/3/6/3/13) 3.1

2016-05-31. Lightly hazy dark red-amber body, headless. Aroma of caramel and toffee malt, lightly fruity notes. Flavour is malty up front, lightly toasty malt has a very English impression to it. Average to light bodied palate, no carbonation. Under carbonated, not necessarily at it’s best, just okay. 5-6/3/5-6/3/12+ On cask at Galbraiths, Auckland, NZ.

Cask pours clear deep amber with a small but lasting white head. Coconut and non-coco nut aroma, good enough to make you...um...nut. Went there. Boom! Medium body with soft carbonation. Fooooking. Gooooood. Beeeeer.

The head is ok, the body darkbrown. It smells malty, chestnut, fruity, darkmalty. The taste is malty, aromatic, hoppy, bit creamy, fruity, aromatic. Tasty! 13/13/12/13/-/13

Cask - Galbraith’s Alehouse, Auckland. Poured with a fine and fading loose off-white head atop a clear chestnut brown coloured body. Lovely nutty, earthy, biscuity and gently toasty malts complemented by a choice mid-fruit character and grassy, leafy English hoppiness. Light to medium body, soft mouthfeel and a lingering almost grapefruity hoppiness in the finish. Lovely stuff and a taste of home. That soft tangerine on the nose is a joy. Yes, this is gorgeous. Simple but gorgeous. Juicy fruits in the aftertaste. Immensely drinkable. At 5.2% it’s not an ideal session bitter but I won’t let that stop me... Come all the way to NZ and sit in an English-styled pub drinking ESB? Hell yes. It’s not my favourite style for nothing and this more than justified my preference on a rainy mid-winter afternoon.

Served at room temp. Soft and flat, friendly caramel right through the palate and mild bitterness to finish. Must be off hand pump.
