COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed especially for connoisseurs. Conditioned in oak bourbon barrels for one year. It has its own unique flavour and has won enough medals to sink a ship! Big John Special Reserve is a must try for dark beer lovers.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2021 500ml bottle from the cellar as the brewery doesn't seem to exist in 2020. Assume Lion has shut it down. Pours like a dark Cola, deep translucent brown with small brown head. Aroma is mix of dark beer & bourbon as expected. This is a supremely easy drinking beer with mild bitterness, none of the OTT malt & a soft, easy but long finish. The mouth feel is light, almost lager like. Nice to have a bourbon infused beer that isn't wine strength but still has the flavour & a hint of warmth. A shame it seems to have vanished from our shores.

500ml bottle BB 9/3/2017 Aroma is all sweet spicy fruit cake. Poured dark red/brown with decent head. A mild bitterness is followed by a delicious smooth mellow rounded finish with warming sherry/brandy barrel overtones. The best from this brewer.

Rzadko spotykany u nas styl, s? nawet dodatki toffee i wanilii. Nieco zbyt s?odkie, ale ci??kie, oleiste i warte wypróbowania. Mimo wszystko dost?pne u nas whiskey stouty moim zdaniem s? lepsze.

I think that is is a bit good. Clearly the brewer is in some kind of rebuild rebadge reimagine, but this has many of things that you might look for in a beer, inviting and welcome about of bitter, fantastic amount of roasted chocolate dark malts and a lovely sweet over-note, which not being a bourbon drinker I’ll make it hat. The finish is soft and lands well. I’m really enjoying this and it is possibly the brewers best.

A pleasantly surprising brew that is full bodied and well balanced but add a subtle hint of hard liquor to keep you guessing. One of my favourite beers from this brewer.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2015 I saw a description a few minutes ago that describe a beer as looking like Coca-Cola. This applies here except that it has been poured over a significant amount of rum to account for the thick latte coloured head. Smells of cocoa, dates, dusty carob dark sugar and molasses. Flavours similar with cola coming through now that the idea has been planted in my head. Some bitterness arising reminiscent of dark chocolate. A lengthy, pleasing finish. Another look a few years after the first trial sees me think this is quite a bit better. Quite a bit better.

500ml bottle purchased and consumed in Christchurch, NZ. Pours clear and dark reddish-brown with a very good beige head. Feel: Medium-full body and nicely smooth; medium and rather lively carbonation. Aroma: appealing and fruity, with raisins, dates and dark roasted grains plus a hint of smoke. Flavor: similar to the aroma with plenty of dark fruits and a hint of smoke, but with some hops showing in the finish and aftertaste and a hint of bourbon. Very good balance. O: Excellent. One of the better NZ dark beers . A big dark ale without real high ABV. Recommended.

Bottle. Pours a dark red colour with a thin white head, malty aroma with the bourbon in the background, the taste is sweet with malt but the bourbon does not come through in the taste, with a dry finish.

weird, i had this only two days ago but it was obviously nothing special (either great or terrible) because i can hardly remember anything about it. malt and alcohol are the two things i remember. it was good, anyway.
