SuperCollider Double IPA is the antimatter to uninspired IPAs. Meddling with the limits of regular Ontario IPAs, the Flying Monkeys brewed a double that blows a black hole in the taste buds of our IPA lovers.

I wonder at the low rating of this beer, which makes me think initial batches weren’t as good. Had this on cask at Milos’ a little while back (just getting around to this). Very strong, hoppy, and hazy IIPA. Nice malty body but dominated by hops--citrus and floral aroma. Lots of lemon up front, quite sweet, but rather easy drinking for the 11%.

650ml. bottle from L.C.B.O. Ottawa. The color is a clear ruby with a thin beige head. The aroma is of hops and sweet fruits, The taste also of hops with a sweet taste of berries and malt, nice mix.The feeling on the palate is good but not long lasting.

August 27, 2011 - on draught at The 2011 Golden Tap Awards @ BeerBistro. I am not putting in the terrible rating I took for this at the GTA ... I had it again in the bottle from a later batch and it was much better, so that’s what we’re going with - amber, average head; taste and aroma strong alcohol and resin bitterness, fairly solid sweet malt backbone, chewy, astringent, decently carbonated with a fairly long sweet/herbal bitter finish, alcohol and citrus pith coats the palate quite a bit.

I drank this with my friend Don, who is Chinese Canadian. He described this pretty well. Its kinda like being the tallest person at a Chinese wedding. Compared to other Ontario beers this is great. Compared to IIPAs anywhere, not so much.

650mL bottle. Dark brown amber pour with a big head. Lots of carbo and floaties! Aroma is strong pine with some grapefruit, touch of malt. Taste is huge grapefruit and pine hops. Slight black liquorice, coffee, brown sugar note on the finish, but it is a chore to get past the hops. Body is a little dry, but not completely. Overall, not very well balanced. All bitterness, all the time.

Amber and bright. Big chewy aroma. Sweet and chew with some alcohol in the finish. Light fruitiness but overall it’s a bit messy. Thanks, Doug!

@Mondial de la Bière 2012, Montreal - quite clear dark amber-brown colour; moderate foam left; toasted malty aroma and nutty with a fair hop presence; very tasty and thick; long hoppy and chewy aftertaste of red fruits and nuts

Pours a very deep amber colour, slightly brown, extremely hazy with a small frothy tan head. Aroma is muted but has a little fruit sweetness to it, some booziness, and not much in the way of hops. Taste is slightly sweet at first, but this is cut off by an underwhelming bitterness. Medium-full body, smooth and rich on the palate, and lively carbonation. Overall a disappointment for me as a double IPA.

This was a disappointment. Flying Monkeys makes awesome beers, but this just ain’t one of ’em. Completely unbalanced. Hops are there for flavour, not just pure old bitterness to cover any other flavour they might be. And yes, I know what a good high IBU IPA should taste like... this just isn’t one of them. Better than the average Pale American Lager? I wouldn’t know, I couldn’t taste the beer. No explosion of flavour here, sorry.
