AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

visionthing (6951) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - DEC 27, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 3, 2020 35,5cl bottle from Viking XPRS. Pours clear golden with a fairly decent, white head. Malty, fruity and hoppy with notes of semi-dried citrus, caramel and hints of pine and herbs. Medium sweet with pleasant hoppy flavours and a nice bitterness. Smooth, balanced and very enjoyable.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2019 Bottle from 2017, provided by Lagunitas. Since this is two years old, and probably has had a chance to let its malts turn, I'm going into this with an open mind. First off, the color is a bright brass, with a white foamy head that leaves behind a decent bit of lacing. The smell has all malts to it, and there is a bit of phenol to it, meaning there is a bit of staleness. But, the phenol goes away when I taste it. I get an amplified beer taste, with some hoppiness there to knock back any sweetness. And I'll note that they don't mention much about the hop varietals in the description. This is described as an 'American Strong Ale,' one of those catchall style names that covers any number of beers, so long as they're not malt liquors. This is indeed not a sipper by any means, and that's mostly from the unheralded hop bitterness.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2019 Bottle. 8.0%. Best before 20.07.19; ~1½ months past. Pours a slightly hazy golden, with an off-white head. Great lacing. Fat hop aroma, a bit dusty. Sugary hint. Remote cheesy hop note as it warms, as well as fruit, light citrus, hint of malt. Further warming brings out herbal and floral hints. Flavour is sweet, a bit sugary, with fat and fruity hops. Zesty hint. Alcohol. Rather bitter finish, somwhat harsh. Alcohol burn. Lingering dryness and a grassy note. Slightly oily palate. Overall pretty good. A bit heavy on the alcohol, but it’s not too misplaced. 06.08.19.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2019 Bottiglia.

Jabah (2322) - Fairfax, Virginia, USA - MAR 14, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 14, 2019 Haven't had Lagunitas in several months, so been craving them. Mainly cause I haven't seen any new ones lately, so when I saw one single of this lying around I grabbed it. Based on the reviews, I was upset that there wasn't more...but honestly, this isn't one that I would miss. Weird, cause it reminds me a little like Lucky 13 (which is one of my favorites by them)...just a little bit weaker with less malt and hops. Clean/smooth mouthfeel though like all of their brews. Some fresh-dry hopped at the end. Maybe the rye takes over somewhat. It sounds funny that a 4.0 rating is a beer that I would not miss, but that just goes to show how great this brewery is!

rosenbergh (14039) - Tampere, FINLAND - JAN 23, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 23, 2019 Draft at The Bishops Arms Mollberg, Helsingborg, Sweden. Enjoyed on Dec 4 2018. 2018 vintage. Cloudy golden color with a small white head. Mild sweet fruity aroma with some tropical notes and freshness. The flavor is fruity, sweet, piney, hoppy, mildly bitter and marmalady. Rich, smooth and balanced. Warming.
