Bottle or keg - If you've had the cans, rate them under "Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier - unfiltered".

“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2019 A moderate smoke flavor present throughout the drink. The beer was quite light as well, and the smoke can mask flavor but that made it quite easy to drink. I did enjoy the toasted malt that complimented the smoke quite well.

huineman (902) - Madrid, SPAIN - MAR 24, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 24, 2019 50 cl bottle poured in its proper pint glass at Polar pub, Madrid. It pours clear and clean golden with a snow-white, long-lasting, nicely lacing head. Aroma is not intense, but neither is it subtle, rather middle of the road. Scents are quite simple: smoke and iron, iron and smoke. Mouthfeel is great, starting light and fresh (so you can drink gallons and gallons) yet very well structured. The finish is quite bitter and very long, with loads of smoke (not just hints in this case.) Very good.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2019 18-Oct-18 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 17-Oct-18 for $5.99 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA)
This German Helles pours a very slightly hazy, bright golden body capped by an inch of fluffy, white head that holds a thick blanket and leaves some spotty and patchy lacing on the glass. The nose is grainy and slightly toasty with very mild smokiness even though no smoked malt is used in this beer, so it's just a residual, yet unmistakable note. On the palate, the slightly sweet, grainy malt base at the forefront and mild, grassy and floral hop flavor with gentle bitterness in the background makes for a perfect Helles Lager, and mild smokiness makes this even more delicious and interesting. To me, the hops have just enough presence for a clean, crisp finish without lingering or overwhelming bitterness, what I would consider a perfect balance. Unlike their other beers, the smokiness isn't assertive in this offering, more just a suggestion or highlight rather than a prominent aspect of the flavor. The beer is medium in weight, medium in carbonation, and dry and perfectly refreshing on the palate. Overall, this is a terrific beer, and nice introduction to the beers from this outstanding German brewery. In a way, this Helles reminds me a lot of Pilsner Urquell because I've always felt that beer has a slight smokiness to it as well. This is now easily my favorite German Helles, even if the smokiness makes this a bit less traditional compared to other examples.

Cybuch (1310) - Muszyna, POLAND - MAR 15, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 15, 2019 W aromacie delikatne, przyjemne nuty wędzone. Barwa jasnozłota, idealnie klarowne, piana drobna, ładna. W smaku, półsłodkie, potem robi się wytrawnie, średnie ciało, orzeźwiające, lekko wędzone. Dosyć mocno kwaskowe na finiszu, wysoko wysycone. Goryczka niska, ziołowa. Przyjemne, lekkie, wędzone piwo, trochę przeszkadza ta kwaskowość.

Choos (1071) - Taylors Hill, AUSTRALIA - MAR 14, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 14, 2019 Aroma: hint of smokehouse almonds with malt Appearance: pale yellow with a hint of hazy and sheet lacing Flavour: sweet malt balanced with some smoke Palate: thin & finishes clean

BlackHaddock (9497) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAR 12, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2019 500ml bottle on 12th March 2019. Drank while on holiday in California. Slight haze to the golden body, white crown. Delicate smoked malty aroma and taste, far less than the breweries much revered proper smoked offerings.

Udmar Garcia (21) - - MAR 4, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 4, 2019 Uma jóia para quem gosta do estilo. Refrescância e leveza aliadas ao aroma levemente defumado. Penso ser a melhor cerveja da marca para se tomar vários exemplares.

NobleTeam26 (209) - Kyiv, UKRAINE - MAR 3, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2019 Light yellow clear color, small foam. Aroma is fresh, typical for lagers, but with notes of smoke. Taste is the same, good light lager with smoke notes on background. Decent.

bdleedahl (1488) - , Saskatchewan, CANADA - FEB 22, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 22, 2019 There is much more than “residual” smokiness. The dominant flavour is smoke, but it is shockingly light and bright. D&S dresden

Szopeen (925) - Torun, POLAND - JAN 20, 2019
