Gamme Passion. Porter anglais

A few hundred years ago, pub owners near the London port and train stations were known to serve local porters a cheap blend of beer comprised of the remains of two or three brews that they could not sell. An ideal, inexpensive beverage to replenish one’s energy, it became known as “Porter’s Beer.” As its popularity grew, brewers then developed a beer called Entire Butt, incorporating various attributes of the original mixture to create a slightly sweet, malty brown beer with lightly burnt caramel notes. It is in homage to this era that our Big Ben Porter was created. Moderately dry with flavors of slightly burnt caramel malts and English hops to bring a light bitterness and balance it all.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2019 Achetée au V&B. Bière noire au nez café. Bouche douce sèche et café. Pas mal mais un peu aqueuse.

Bottle picked up in a trip to CA. Poured a dark brown color with a larger sized tan head. Thinner and a bit watery ... roast, some coffee, and toasty.

Bottle, I believe undated, drunk 9/22/17.
Light tan head recedes fairly steadily to cover, atop a dark mahogany, clear body.
Chocolate, crusty brown bread, light coffee-like roast suggestions and a hint of caramel provide a very straightforward porter-like nose highlighting the roasted barley. Base malts seem sparse, well-attenuated and there's no alcohol or flaw.
In the mouth it's fairly soft, despite being very dry and having not all that much base malt character. Just a touch of caramel and mostly chocolate and bread with coffee coming on the finish. Watery, thin texture with low, somewhat loose carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. A bit tired and lifeless. Seems like a very good interpretation of a bottled, filtered English porter!

Bottle. Dark brown in color, head died fast. Aroma is English ale yeast, chocolate, barley. Flavor is a reflection. Good amount of roast and chocolate. Very flavorful.

500 ml bottle from Drummondville Metro. Pours a very dark brown with mocha-coloured head that leaves some lace. Aroma is quite roasty with lots of coffee, a little dark chocolate and some sweet toffee. Flavour has a strong roasty character with notes of coffee, sweetish toffee, dark chocolate and a bit of herbal bitterness. Fine carbonation. Good one.

Tap at Le Saint-Bock in Montréal. Brown with copper/ruby. Toasty aroma with sourish berries. Leafy, earthy. Tastes toasty and sweet, finishes grainy. Not too bad, but again, not exactly what I’d expect when ordering a Porter.

Draft at bier markt Montreal. Dark pour with a moderate head. Aromas of light coffee, grains and maybe chocolate. Taste is malt forward.msome grains and a bit of coffee. Lingering burnt finish, maybe a bit of chocolate. Mellow carbonation and a solid body.
