Belgian dark special ale Rich & spiced (from 750-ml label) For more than 35 years we had to miss the Christmas beer but in 2002 the tradition was restored with Gouden Carolus Christmas. It’s a strong, dark ruby red beer with character and contains an alcohol percentage of 10.0 % alc.vol. Brewed in August, the beer rests a few months to reach an optimal balance. Three kinds of hops and 6 different kinds of herbs and spices define the rich taste of this Christmas beer. UPDATED: FEB 11, 2024 Decently rich malt, sweet, boozey with star anise and molasses. Finishes a little thinner, lingeringing swettness and licorice and a little ash. Decent.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2024 330 ml bottle. My vigorous pour into a footed tulip yields a dark brown liquid topped by an ample frothy tan head. Sweet toasted malt aroma hints at dark dried fruits and caramel. Flavor brings sweet notes of cherry, figs and anise seeds. Some warming alcohol in middle. Smooth and approachable, with an almost sherry-like character.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2024 Enjoying the third bottle of a 4-pack I bought back in 2021 (bottled 09/02/2021) to have one of each Christmas season for four years, and each one had been delicious. Carolus Christmas is thick and sweet that still pours to a huge light-brown head. There are plums, raisins and candy shop sweets in the aroma, but they settle into very aromatic black licorice (which I don't recall from past years). An excellent strong ale.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2023 En virkelig god balance i en mørk brunlig let gylden væske. Den bedste juleøl i år med god aroma af toffee og spices.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2023 330ml bottle. Clear burgundy with a foamy beige head. Flavors are dark fruits, citrus, chocolate, caramel, spices and alcohol with nutty notes. Full body, good carbonation, oily texture.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2023 Aromas are dark malt, candy sugar, Belgian yeast and spice. Flavors are somewhat similar to nose, more sweet than bitter or tangy, spice comes out more as does candy sugar. Slightly soft mouth and satisfying finish. Very nice beer.
