For more than 35 years we had to miss the Christmas beer but in 2002 the tradition was restored with Gouden Carolus Christmas. It’s a strong, dark ruby red ale with character and contains an alcohol percentage of 10.5 % alc.vol. Brewed in August, the beer rests a few months to reach an optimal balance. Six different kinds of herbs and spices and three different kinds of hops define the rich taste followed by a long, well-seasoned aftertaste. Perfect combination with wild, stews or ripened, strong cheeses. Top-class!

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2019 Aroma reminded me a bit of gluhwein and cough medicine. Initial taste was a bit sharp, once again reminding me of cough syrup. The taste settled down nicely, bringing out a more caramel taste, making it an easy drink

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2019 Bottle. Very, dark amber with a three finger head. Aroma and taste were both holiday spice and fruitcake.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2019 Ligero sabor a hierbas, anís, picotas (los caramelos) y su típico dulzor. Buena retención de espuma.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2019 330ml bottle from Good Spritis Co Wine & Beer, Glasgow (£5.30):
Slightly darker than expected & bordering on black in colour, the beer formed quite a thick & foamy head that was a creamy white & managed to hold quite well given the strength of the beer. There was a pleasant sweetness to the nose with a lot of dark fruits showing, most notably some figs & plum alongside a aniseed aroma & some light spices. Towards the middle I got some caramel & a touch of malt with hints of cinnamon & raisins making an appearance too. The taste was quite a dark & sweet on too with a few more figs this time around & plenty of plum as well, it was also quite rich with a little alcohol showing as expected for the abv. of the beer but it was quickly followed up by some nice spices that were a little stronger than they were with the nose too, mainly some cloves & a few hints of cinnamon showed this time. Overall the beer was a very drinkable one with a full body that was quite rich & smooth with strong carbonation as well; excellent stuff.

Aromas a levaduras, diversas especias, caramelos, frutas maduras. El sabor es dulce y recuerda a uvas pasas, regaliz, café, chocolates... Una gran elección.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2019 330ml tap from Burgemeester Jansen. Lovely dark Ruby colour, with small but lingering top. Smells of licorice, raisins, and figs. Tasteis heavy of licorice round off to maltyish finish. Bit harsh at the end, but that also serves as a kind of warmer. Would recommend, but not first choice Christmas/winter bier.

elosop (704) - SWEDEN - JAN 12, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2019 Oklar mörk mahogny med tjockt beige skum. Doftar sött och kryddigt, torkad frukt, russin, sirap och lite kanel och kardemumma. Smaken fyllig, söt, kryddig och pepprig, lite smörkola. Eftersmaken lång med kryddiga, söta toner.
