Grumbo (7826) - Ipswich, Suffolk, ENGLAND - OCT 24, 2017
Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown with a modest beige head. Aroma of toffee, molasses, malt, chocolate, prune, raisin, light citrus and spice. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation. Warming finish. Liked this.

Biroholik (2396) - Sosnowiec, Poland, POLAND - FEB 11, 2016
Chmiel: Goldings Kolor : Fenomenalny rubinowy.
Goryczka niska słodkawo-alkoholowa. Alkohol bardzo rozgrzewający, ale w pozytywnym znaczeniu. Lekko wodniste.
Wysycenie: Niskie.
Piwo kupione w Marks & Spencer w UK (£1,99).

Bottle (330 ml) at home. Best before October ’08 so nearly 8 years past BB date now. 8% abv. Thanks to boutip for this one! Very dark amber with a small ring of beige foam leaving little to no lacing. Aroma has interesting figs and plums features along berries and caramel but there’s also some unfortunate cardboard and oxidation notes. Taste is similar with caramel, figs, plums, berries, caramel and spices but also cardboard and oxidation. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is watery. Earthy finish. That one definitely wasn’t strong enough to support that much age. Some interesting features, but not enough to avoid finishing down the drain.

weordie (1518) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - SEP 1, 2015
Pours dark brown with little to no head. The aroma is an inviting stewed prunes aroma. The taste is disgusting though, this one went down the sink.

Aroma: caramel malts, some grain and cereals, alcohol. Appearance: hazy brown, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: sweets continue, flat carbonation, alcohol. Overall: OK Barley Wine/Old Ale, not terribly complex, a bit light in both aroma and palate. Bottle from M&S, Victoria.

overtheline (140) - Inverness, SCOTLAND - JUN 20, 2015
330ml bottle pours pretty much black with small fast dissipating tan head. Nose is cocoa, bitter chocolate. No big aromas, some light vanilla sweetens the light cocoa nose. Big malt hit on taste, mild chocolate still pervades. Low carbonation, medium to full body. Is this a barley wine? I really don’t know. It is pretty one dimensional but it’s also pretty different and pretty tasty. At £1.40 a bottle it is, in my mind, an absolute steal.

spacecube (1841) - Leeds, West Yorkshire, ENGLAND - APR 26, 2015
330ml bottle, £1.40 from M&S, not expecting much, but this was a pretty good deal. Malty aroma, chocolate and toffee, brown sugar, stewed fruit, and little else. Lacking complexity. Medium bodied, oily texture. Finish is medium sweet. Carbonation soft to flat. Not bad.

JorgeLee (2638) - Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 18, 2015
Bottle from M&S, on sale for £1.40. I see this beer has strongly polarised opinions, and have to wonder if something has changed since it went big volume and got M&S distribution. My bottle poured a little fizzy and brown and produced no foam whatsoever. Malty I guess, dark fruit, prunes. Hid alcohol quite well. In fact hid everything quite well - this was just bland. Nothing unpleasant, but deeply forgettable. Lacked balancing bitterness, or interesting yeast feel, or even a real depth to the malt flavours. I won’t bother going back to get more.

zacgillbanks (6530) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - APR 9, 2015
Bottle from Marks & Spencer, Team Valley, Gateshead. Previously (2003) 8.5% ABV. This very dark brown-black beer pours with a thin white head. It has rich liquorice and chocolate flavours, Christmas cake and sherry notes followed by currants, orange and vanilla on the smooth, creamy finish. Superb!

MisoW (4133) - Bratislava, SLOVAKIA - APR 7, 2015
Bottle at home. Pours brown color, nearly no head. Aroma of malt and chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, cocoa, nuts, malt, chocolate, wood.
