COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Complex and classy, Achel's Extra Bruin is maybe one of the most approachable Belgian Trappist beers that I've tried. This is also probably the liveliest Quad that I've drank to date. The actively visible carbonation gives an early warning to pour slowly. You'll hear the bubbling as clearly as you can see it. Brown color with a generous amount of head. It's sexy - for a Quad. Had I planned more wisely, I would have prepared some cheeses for this beer because it's practically begging to be paired with some. The yeast imparts strong notes of sherry and port. On the less vinous spectrum, there are tastes of dark grapes ripe from the vine and aged candied fruits. Despite all the carbonation, the texture is full and creamy. And yes, it would certainly soften the acidic notes of a good strong cheese. Damn, I really missed a great pairing opportunity with this one. Oh well, at least it's plenty good on it's own, too.

Bottle. A- Champagne, grapes, plums, soda water. A- Copper color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Grape juice, effervescent, cherry, slightly bready. P- Medium body, average texture, high carbonation, fruity finish. O- Shockingly carbonated for a quad. Almost like a spritzer at first sip. Tasted about like a low quality port. Really interesting and pretty good. I want to say this was a unique and abnormal quad but yet it's one of the most sought after base quads you'll find. Hmmm.

Very creamy, fruity, refreshing, drinkable, and delicious. Carbonation absolutely roars in the glass, and that coupled with the beautiful hickory wood color makes for one of the most beautiful beers I've ever drunk. Has a long lasting, dense head that reminds me almost of creamy hot chocolate. Very creamy yet light on the mouthfeel. Lots of strawberry jam and fresh berries in the aroma. Fresh, juicy, sweet plum and berries with some Belgian yeast in the taste. An absolutely delicious beer. One of the best I've ever had. This one was several months past the best buy date and showed absolutely no signs of wear. I'm sure the super thick bottle helps this beer age as flawlessly as it does. 20/20.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2018 Butelka 0.75l. Warka October 2019. Kolor ciemno bursztynowy, brązowy. Wysoka, drobnopecherzykowa piana zostawiająca laicing. Aromat raczej klasyczny, belgijskie drożdże, slodowy. Średnio wysycone, ale nie drażniąco. Alkohol dobrze ukryty. Raczej lekkie w konsystencji. Lekko kwaskowy finisz, wiśniowy. Bardzo pijalne. Fajne piwo.
