juiceisloose (3782) - Windermere, Florida, USA - JUN 2, 2019UPDATED: JUN 2, 2019 750 ml bottle. Opened on my birthday. Pours an oily, jet black color and topped by a small tan colored head of foam that quickly settles into a thin film and leaves some thin lines of lace on the glass. The aroma is really nice showing dark chocolate, earthy roasted coffee beans, dark fruits, bourbon, and oak laden vanilla over a dark roasted malt base. The coffee doesn’t overpower, but is perfectly integrated with the dark chocolate and malts while adding a nice fruity and nutty undertone with just the right amount of barrel notes. The flavor follows suit and is a perfect marriage between the dark chocolate, espresso, dark roasted coffee, and malts while the bourbon soaked oak and oaky vanilla helps smooth things out and adds further depth. The coffee roast comes across dry and adds ample balancing bitterness. Full bodied, smooth, and slick on the mouthfeel with balanced carbonation that leads to a dark chocolate, smooth roasted coffee, bourbon, and oaky vanilla on the finish with no alcohol presence detected. Delicious stuff. This is perfectly balanced, full flavored, and a world class imperial stout as you would expect from Alesmith.

daleharshman (1174) - Escondido, California, USA - JUN 15, 20181100th RATING! At long last, I pull one of the major jewels from the cellar. 750 ml bottle purchased in February 2013 from the brewery ($30.00). I had this at a friend's tasting shortly after its release and thought it too hot, so I laid it down in the cellar for the past 5+ years. POURS a true pitch black with a finger of dark brown foam that quickly fizzles away. Complex and nuanced AROMA of deep dark chocolate, vanilla bean, bourbon, expensive coffee, coconut, sticky dark fruits, and more whiskey. FLAVOR of big whiskey barrel, smooth complex coffee, fudge brownie, cocoa powder, and wet oak. The initial very smooth finish is interrupted by lingering big whiskey in the finish (still a bit hot even after more than five years). The bourbon barrel outweighs the superb coffee utilized here. A beautiful beer, and a better balance with the coffee would be my only recommendation for improvement. (217, 1100)
