Growler... This beer rocks!… Clear dark brown pour with a tiny, khaki, off-white head. The fragrance is a mélange of milk chocolate, vanilla and toasted hazelnuts. Full-bodied and velvety with lazy carbonation. The flavor is balanced nicely and quite nutty with a pleasant mocha component. It’s thin, but tasty nonetheless. Roasty, moderately bitter finish. From a 750 ml. growler acquired at the brewery. It pours jet black with ruby red hues on the edge of the glass and an astounding three-finger silky, mocha head. The aroma is alive with milk chocolate, coffee grinds, roasted dark malts, rye grain, and earthy hops which are actually subtle but noticeable. The body is medium but incredibly smooth and creamy. The taste tends to favor the chocolate over the coffee of the nose with a good earthy hop bitterness coming up on the backside and ending dryish. Solid opaque with a huge tan head that persists forever. Aromas of roast, coffee, caramel, dark fruit, light chocolate. Is this a porter or a stout? The flavor is heavy on the roasted grains, big caramel and light chocolate with a hint of smoke. Light earthy hop flavor and a spice from the rye add a bit of complexity. Medium to thick body with a moderate level of carbonation and sweet creamy ashy mouthfeel. This is a big porter that feels like a stout at times, but its so damn good who cares about labels? Taster @ the source. Pours black w/brown edges and a thin cream colored head. Cocoa and coffee on the nose with just a hint of smoke. Growler: thanks, Jeff! Dark pour, basically black with some deep mahogany at the very edges. Barely any head, only a java-cream colored collar outlining the top. Aroma is full of light roast, creamy chocolate, milky sweetness, lightly spicy rye. Finish has notes of pumpernickel bread, with a very, very mild hint of peated malt. Taste is more full of rye & rye bread with smoked wood chips, thick woody rye, burnt malts, and a river of chocolatey sweetness. Hint of creaminess underneath. Never to sweet or too bitter. Taster at the source. Deep black with a thick brown head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, wet dog. Nice and roasty with coffee and dark chocolate notes. A little resin bitterness on the finish.
