COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

Sixteen ounce glass. A rather weak IPA, medium lacing , not very bitter. It was alright , but I am not in a hurry to have another.

From Nov 2007 I got this one in a trade with autumnaldave. Thanks Dave! This is the 2007 edition, best by 041208 and it pours a clear gold with a nice 2 finger head of foam that settles down to a 1/2" layer further into the session. Lots of nice lacing to be had here. The smell is a wonderful nose of floral hoppiness along with a touch of spice. The taste is hoppy to the max. Lots of floral and some grapefruit are tickling my taste buds. There's some malt character in the background to somewhat balance things out but this fresh bottle really is all about the hops. Tasty son of a gun. It has a medium mouthfeel and the carbonation is nice and lightly done. It finishes very florally with just the smallest of touches of caramel malt. Yummy. And...the alcohol is hidden pretty well so I'd say this is quite drinkable. I reviewed a 2006 version that was slightly past its best by last year and the hop character was quite subdued compared to this. Either way, you get a top quality DIPA but I defintely prefer the fresher sample. Thanks again, Dave!

Tried for the first time back in 2008, still a very solid DIPA. Very well balanced. Orangish pour. Thick caramel body, nice blend of piney and citrus character. A real pleasure.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is pine, floral, grass. Medium mouth, light bitterness, citrus, light dry finish, very good.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ. Pours a very cloudy, very dark golden orange color with light tangerine edges and a 1.5 finger white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Really good retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Dank resinous hop aroma with lots of pine needle, spruce tip and earthy grass character. This is countered by a subtle citrus presence along with boozy sweetness and a caramel malt backbone. On the fuller end of medium bodied with a very dry and dank earthy hop presence that lingers over the malt backbone and boozy sweetness into a slightly dry finish. Dry, sticky and bitter with aggressive hops up front. The hop profile is a bit one dimensional however with only very subtle citrus character. Could use some more sweetness for balance. Malt backbone is a bit too heavy for my liking with notes of caramel, toffee and biscuit followed by boozy heat in finish. Decently hoppy but alcohol and strong malt flavors hinder the flavor a bit.

Golden and cloudy with a ton of white foamy head. Nice grapefruit and apricot flavor to it. Hoppy and bitter but flows smooth. Good shizz

Fresh clean taste while drinking but leaves strong bitter after taste that lingers for hours.

Pours an amber color with a full bouquet of flowers emitting from it. Taste is crisp but distinctly bitter. The full hops taste overpowers this beer, leaving it all on the palate after the swallow. A mild clove and lasting bitterness in the aftertaste. A good Imperial IPA, just not my style.
