An American style barley wine. Big on flavor, big on flavor, big on hops and big on alcohol. An unseasonably strong beer, brewed with lots of dark malts to give a rich malt character, finishing with a distinctive hop aroma and a little sweetness.
Malts: pale, wheat, crystal, chocolate, black
Hops: Galena, nugget, east Kent goldings

33cl bb10/2016 (seems a bit prudish for a barley wine), via BH. - Bref: unripe quince, pear and orchard fruit peel and raw cocoa powder reach a heady point of overhopped saturation, ending in harsh tobacco and tea leaf. A superboost braonblast that did not fall on my palate like a tasty drop. - Sherry aromas, suffused cured wood and Quittenobstler, old and spent cognac (apple). - Galena bitterness adds earthy and wooden bitters, but sparse like soils and twigs (cf. Chimay Rouge). - Harsh mouthfeel, all bitters even from the speciality malts, very little malt cushions or fruit sweetness. Dried toffee maybe, apple skins on autumn soil. - US Barleywine has always been a bit of an overkill style, but this one seems particularly immature in its low drinkability.

Mahogany color with beige head. Aroma is pretty weak, just some sweet malts and alcohol, also a bit tart. Taste starts slightly sweet with caramel malt but gets quickly bitter and hoppy. Earthy, resiny hops dominate the finish and linger in the aftertaste. Body is medium and slightly sticky. Not bad but it lacks some complexity.

330ml bottle (Alus Celle, Riga)
Sweet caramelly aroma. Nice deep red. Slightly fizzy carbonation. Simple heavy malty body, a bit of burnt dustiness, quite a bit of dark caramel. Sweet palate, a bit thin though, carbonation quite high. Disappointing and dead.
