At the Ale House in Tamiru, NZ, pours a dark black pour with a java head. Nose is deep sweet roasted malt. Taste is sweet chocolate , with deep roasted malt....finishes on tg same tasting notes. Quaff Score 7 / 10

2016-05-23. Black, tan head. Lightly roasty aroma, some subtle dark fruit. Flavour is similar with a mild sweet dark malt base, and light roast malt notes throughout. Average plus bodied palate. Decent. 7/4/7/3/14. On tap at Speight’s Ale House, Nelson, NZ.

The head is stable, the body black. It smells roasty darkmalty. The taste is roasty, darkmalty, bit wooden, coffee, bit chocolate. Nice 12/12/12/11/-/12 3.6

On tap at the Speights Alehouse. Very nice taste. Aromas of burnt caramel and chocolate. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Black, with a frothy head.

It’s unfortunate they don’t bottle this beer any more. From the tap, it’s invariably too cold. I can’t get any aroma. It gets a 5 for not being unpleasant though. Nice, woody, milky flavours of roasted malts and bitter chocolates (with no coffees to overwhelm it). Savoury finish, a bit like Marmite or Oxo. I forgive the beer for being a bit on the lighter side. This could be among the best of New Zealand porters.

Dark with a brown head. Flavour of coffee, roasted malts, quite sweet. Dry palate, thin body. A good beer comparing to other Speigth’s. But the palate is not enjoyable as a porter should be.

Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and wood as well as lighter notes of soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of mlat, caramel, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. The mouthfeel is smooth.

Draught. Spare tan head over a clear black-ruby body. Espresso like aroma and taste of chocolate, roasted wood, coffee. Spicey balanced finish. Full bodied.

Draft at Speight’s Alehouse in Greymouth. Pours red-black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, caramel, roast, coffee, and smoke. The flavor is roasty with a lot of chocolate and those follow through to the finish. Really smooth and full bodied, but just a wee bit watery, which keeps it from being a higher-shelf porter. Still, I liked this one a lot and it certainly beat expectations.
