Rue D’Floyd is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.4% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in bourbon barrels for one year. Rue D’Floyd developed notes of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee from barrel aging, which was supplemented with vanilla beans, Portola coffee, TCHO cacao nibs and cherries prior to bottling. The result is a wonderfully balanced yet flavorful ale exploding with coffee, dark chocolate, caramel and dark fruit.

750ml bottle pours out black topped with a brown head. Nose is sweet chocolate fudge coffee roast booze and barrels. Taste is more of the heavy sweet chocolate plenty coffee and oak.

750 ml bottle at 2017 RIS tasting. Deep, dark brown, small creamy tan head. Big complex aroma, coffee, chocolate, roast grains, vanilla, molasses.....Roast grains carry the taste through to the finish, lots of alcohol heat too, and a little fruitiness. A monster of an imperial stout, extremely tasty.

Aroma dark chocolate, oak, cocoa powder, thick dark malt syrup, toffee, slight coconut, vanilla, licorice, brownie batter, slight coffee presence and almost non existent cherry. Pours black with an extremely thin brown foam rim and alarming alcohol legs. Taste brings a full bodied brew with notes of chocolate, toffee, oak, leather, coconut and vanilla upfront. Mid palate offers decent charred malts, thick malt syrup, brownie batter, fudge, oak, more vanilla, coffee grounds, green pepper skin, odd tart cherry and metallic malt funk. Finishes boozy with residual chocolate, coffee oils, bourbon and vanilla. A very complex and full bodied beer boasting tons of flavor. A rating.

Bottle shared, a little past its prime. Flavored oxidized and sharpened. cherries are stale. Sweet base. Some spices. Odd and don’t like. Too boozy.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours pitch-black with a small, creamy, taupe head. Good retention. The aroma is decadent and complex, plush and rich - chocolate, red and purple berries, vanilla and toasted oak. Full-bodied, viscous and velvety with busy carbonation. The flavor is a bourbony and lavish blend of fudge, tart cherries, bitter charcoal, vanilla, dark chocolate, buttery toffee and caramel. A nice, soul and belly-warming finish with Hunahpu’s-like complexity. This is instantly a new Top 20 beer for me. Thanks so much to landhoney for allowing me the opportunity to sample this world-class beer!

A vigorous pour into my teku glass produces a quickly disappearing, deep, dark brown colored head. The beer is simply black and opaque. The aroma smells richly nutty, has a savory roasted character, even a bit of char / smoke, lots of vanillin, and a finish that is lighter with a cherry like fruitiness. Alcohol laden, but fairly smooth, barrel notes play a big role here, but there is a dark, concentrated, cold coffee note that is almost as big if not bigger at times.

Somewhat sweet up front, this is accentuated by sweet alcohol notes up front, but is balanced just a bit by spicy oak, and spicy / warming alcohol notes as well. There is a charred character to the finish that seems a product of dark roasted coffee and roasted dark malts. The carbonation is somewhat light, but a touch prickly, and the body is fairly light for a beer of this strength, though this is certainly a sipping brew. Rich vanillin notes, meld with subtle cherry fruit notes, some burnt prune character, and a charred raisin flavor.

Almost balanced, the alcohol and spiciness from the oak can be a bit harsh at times, and this is certainly on the sweet side, but isn’t quite cloying. This can be nicely complex at times if you can get past some of the more dominant notes (sweetness especially). This can be enjoyable in small doses.

Black syrup, headless. Vanilla, Bourbon, spirits, coffee and mocha. Coffee, mocha, café noir cookies. Well bodied doesn’t come close; alcoholheat. Not the best of the Bruery, but compared to its twin, a relief.

750 ml. shared bottle. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, fruit, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, coffee, and barrel. Wish I could have tried this sooner.

Bottle. Deep black, thick as ink. One finger of graham cracker-colored froth becomes a sizable ring. Green pepper-like coffee aroma. Black pepper as well. Vanilla bean, milk chocolate and dark sweet cherry also make appearances. The flavor has all the character of the aroma, but with tons of additional cherry and vanilla sweetness up front. More sugar in the back end, very dark fruity -- cherries, plums, prunes. Alcohol, coffee and very dark, bitter, smoky chocolate hit before major sweetness rolls in. Medium-full body has nice viscosity, but breaks up in to quite a bit of fizz as it moves. Mild, peppery carbonation. Lingering sugars. There’s a lot going on in this guy. It tastes best before the swallow, where the earthiness of vanilla and bite of chocolate are noticeable, rather than after, where the sweet fruity notes overpower a bit.
