The impact of homebrewers on the American craft beer industry has been immense. The comfort level and lack of inhibitors provided by a domestic brewing environment fosters a near limitless brand of experimentation, allowing homebrewers to push te beer envelope to its breaking point. Many of the professional brewing world’s best recipes--from West Coast IPAs to imperial stouts and even sours--began as homespun standouts so spectacular they had to be unleashed on the world in order to improve it.

With this in mind, each year we hold an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned homebrewing competition, the champion of which gets their recipe brewed and distributed nationwide by Stone. This year’s winner, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional apalate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper, and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the sout, as our collaborators from Baja California, Cervezeria Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice, and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking but thriving at an all-time high.

Color negro con capa de espuma marrón de dos dedos de grosor y retención decente. Carbonatación suave. Textura oleosa. Aroma muy especiado. Cacao, chocolate, nuez moscada muy presente, canela, haba tonka. Bastante dulce. En boca, de nuevo, dulce. Chocolate, azúcar moreno, nuez moscada, canela, haba tonka, vainilla lejana. Ni rastro de café o picante. Final dulce y especiado. Postgusto con mucha canela y mucha nuez moscada.

Had the taste been a bit more complex, I would say this is one of the best stouts I've tried so far. The aromas are not super intense but it has a punch, and it's quite spiced for what most stouts tend to be. The nutmeg and peppers are more present in aroma than taste, which is still pretty good, but a bit too sweet for me as I tend to look for a higher bitterness. Aftertaste is delicious and lasting anyway, texture is on the medium-to-light side, low carbonation and not quite boozy, just how I like my stouts.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2018 Pours dark brown to black with a khaki head. Aromas of nutmeg and cinnamon. Taste the same with some chocolate and coffee a little chili heat but not much. Nutmeg lingers on the palate. Very complex ale. Lots going on and it all works. Medium palate. Very well done.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2018 Deep black with tanned and persistent head. Fairly light aroma of latte and roasted malts. Chocolate in mouth, medium sweet and notes of roasted almond and nuts. Medium dark chocolate bitterness finish, full-bodied and somewhat oily texture. Very spot-on chocolate stout.

0.33l can (Berlin brewery). Black body with a loose light brown head. Chocolate, cinnamon and pepper are all present both in the aroma and the taste. It also has notes of citrusy hops, caramel and coffee. The spices are only there to add a twist, but they are not defining the beer's character. Nice beer.

Can. Pours very dark brown, almost black, with a two fingers thick tan head. Strong sweet coffee aroma. A lot of vanilla and nutmeg, milk chocolate and quite spicey. Very sweet taste. Alcohol is well hidden. Even if nice, the mix of all the flavour is quite heavy though and the last sips are a bit tiring.

Découverte en son temps dans une boite découverte "Saveur Bière", il s'agissait de ma première dégustation d'un Imperial Stout. Une bière riche en arômes et en saveur, très moka, très vanille, très épicée... très bonne en fait ! A déguster à température ambiante.
