Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5% version.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2018 Bottle from Bitter Virtue. I rather like this despite some of the other reviews. Heavily hopped ale with what seems like an edge of cinnamon

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Clear deep amber. Nose is red fruits, burnt caramel, sweet, resin, biscuit. Tastes biscuity malts, bitter resin, burnt sticky caramel, sweet, heavy and somewhat unpleasantly malty.

Tap, ADT. Clear amber brown with a thin off-white head. Nice malt nose but not much going on in the glass. Some light toast and malt. Light bodied with a short, muted finish.

C+. Pours a clear golden color with white head. Flavor is okay, not bitter for the amount of hops

500 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 9/17/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear medium orange/amber/light copper color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, orange, peach, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Bit of diacetyl in the aromas, but not overpowering. Taste of big lemon, orange, peach, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, peach, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light dryness from lingering bitterness, increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with a bit of warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice English strong ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Very well balanced and a great style example. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2017 Copper with a white head. Aroma is citrus hops, bready malts. Taste is citrus hops and malts like a bitter. More of a IPA than a winter ale.

From a bottle. Pours clear copper brown with a fizzy off white head. Tastes like doughy malt, corn, dried fruits, and booze. Smells like doughy malt, corn, dried fruits, and light booze.

sonnycheeba (7842) - Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JAN 1, 2017
Bottle. Pours clear copper. Aroma and flavor are bready and caramel malts, fruit cake, faint booze, faint floral notes, and a slightly watery finish. Medium body.
