Barentsz, bears & beer

When Willem Barentsz attempted to navigate the Northeast Passage, his crew fought twin terrors: polar bears and frozen beer. Our white ale, with its refreshing fruity notes, is a tribute to the restless and rugged spirit that kept Barentsz going.

Copenhagen 22/4 2018. 33 cl bottle from Skjold Burne, Brønshøj. Bear waving at me on the label. Pours hazy pale yellow with small bubbly white head. Settles as lonely thin patch of foam in the center of the surface of the beer. Aroma is medium intense. Sweet and fruity. Medium strong sour notes. Medium carbonation. Thin, watery texture. Flavor is medium sweet followed by slightly lighter sour bitterness. Aftertaste is sourish and flowery. Finish is semi-dry. As always nice to be reminded of summer - but to be honest this is pretty much the middle of the road. And I am not sure I understand the connection between Willem Barentsz' Polar adventures and a summery Witbier.

Hazy white colour, white foam. Citrussy, light lemon flavour, sweet flowers. Taste is refreshing, lemony, curacao. Refreshing, not a bed Witbier.

(Draught at Craft & Draft, Amsterdam, 23 Feb 2018) Hazy yellow colour with frothy, white head. Fruity nose with orange, peaches and white bread. Malty, fruity taste with notes of white bread, orange, peaches and a mild grassy bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and well balanced witbier, but hardly exciting. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are wheat malt, fruits, flowers, hops and little citrus. Sweet malty finish.

thirstyrabbit (1905) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - FEB 1, 2018
Bottle. Cool label. Straw yellow body, medium tall head. Aroma has citrus and coriander. Medium full mouthfeel with pleasant carbonation. Citric taste with some light herbs, not really getting much chamomile. Pretty crisp and refreshing. But a Witbier is not something I would choose as my last ever drink before a giant polar bear is coming to crush my frozen boat in the Arctic.

0.33 l bottle from K-Supermarket Kamppi, Helsinki. Apperance is very pale and has a big head. Taste is oily, camomilla dominates, elderflowers are also there somewhere. Ending is slightly spicy. Quite nice and I welcome the additions to the classic Hoegaarden recipe.

Marstonlad (1040) - Helsinki, FINLAND - JAN 10, 2018
UPDATED: JAN 10, 2018 Bottle from K-Supermarket Kamppi, Helsinki. Pours cloudy golden with a little white head. The aroma features lemon, hay and zest; pale malts and Belgian yeast feature. Taste is light sweet initially, later light bitter and a bit crisp. Flavours of lemon, grain and orange, some spiciness. The palate is light to medium-bodied and smooth. Easy and simple, drinkable wit.
