Scopey (24184) - Oldmeldrum, SCOTLAND - APR 12, 2024
UPDATED: APR 12, 2024 Can from Sierra Nevada UK Webshoppe. It pours clear darkest brown with a thick, fluffy khaki head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, cacao nibs, chocolate cake, coffee grounds, touch of pipe tobacco and malt loaf. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet character, charred pine, dark chocolate, gateaux, coffee grounds, toasted peppery spice, malt loaf and a tickle of alcohol with drying, bitter roasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Rounded and flavourful. Solid US-style porter.

UPDATED: OCT 7, 2023 Wow, I didn't think I'd ever get to taste this beer again as Sierra Nevada discontinued it years ago. It was one of my original favorite craft beers in the late 80s, and I was lucky enough to score a 6-pack of a special run at the brewery in Chico! It comes in a pretty blue and white can instead of a bottle now, but it's the same delicious Porter. It started with the foamiest head I've seen in years, at least 2 inches tall, beautiful light tan color. The body is crystal clear mahogany with a copper tint. Aromas of freshly roasted malt and dry wood. That roasted malt comes through in the taste with bittersweet chocolate and coffee, with some vanilla, and a touch of root beer. The hops don't hide in this one, but they're earthy and bitter around the edges of the tongue. Finishes dry with more wood and a light molasses flavor. This brings back great memories, and I can only hope that SN will either bring this back as a regular (at least in the taproom) or as a seasonal/special release that I can hopefully get again.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2023 Tight off white left a creamy top on a dark brown body. Smoked, woody & pine aroma. Medium bodied, smooth with a foamy cloying back. Malt, smoked, burnt & caramel tastes with a bitter lightly hopped finish. Well brewed Porter.

Schnabelhund (152) - TAIWAN - OCT 31, 2021
UPDATED: OCT 31, 2021 Sierra Nevada Porter pours a beautiful dark brown color with a medium-sized beige head. It has a fat and malty nose with notes of cocoa, coffee, caramel and dried dark fruits with contrasting bright floral and fruity undertones. The attack is rich, darkly malty and flavorful, is followed by a mid-palate with tones of molasses, roast, and floral undertones which in turn leads to a roasty dark chocolate and coffee finish with a smoky touch. The flavors are well-rounded and easy yet satisfyingly complex. A rich and pleasing brew.

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2021 0.355l bottle. Very deep ruby, almost black colour with long lasting, stiff off-white head. Aroma: Caramel, dark chocolate and coffee with a hint of matured cheese/yeasty/funky notes. With some time a forest fruity tone appears. Taste: Has a sweet malty and fruity start (blueberry and blackcurrant) with a gently tarty feel and a medium strong bitter mouthfeel. Very well balanced beer. Has a softly oily texture. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Medium lasting pleasent dry/bitter finish with a malty coda.
