Session Pale Ale. English yeast. Brewed for All Four Seasons. Even If Three of Them Are Winter. This low-ABV, Citra-powered pale ale is our session beer of choice. Bursting with Citra hop flavor and tropical, citrusy notes, this incredibly approachable pale ale showcases Surly’s bright side. No, we don’t know where the “e” went. Hops: Citra & Warrior. Malts: 2-Row, Weyermann Acidulate, Gambrinus Honey, Simpsons Golden Naked Oats. Yeast: English Yeast

UPDATED: SEP 11, 2020 Can from Tops in Tempe. Straight from the can so no comments on appearance. The aroma is nice sweet malt and a hint of earthy, citrus hops. Gentle flavor that has medium bitterness that lingers with black tea and a hint of honey sweetness. Very enjoyable.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2020 Surly XTRA 4.5% Citra Pale Ale Opaque gold with a thick white head. On cracking it open I was like “oh yeah, that’s the stuff”. The label says bright, citrusy, hoppy and it delivers on all counts. At first I felt the body was a bit light but as I continued drinking it, I couldn’t perceive that. At times you got notes of dank but this baby is pure Citra goodness. Great.

nearbeer (7085) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - AUG 10, 2020
UPDATED: AUG 10, 2020 4 pack of pints, canned 06/12/20. Slight fog on the brass colored brew with a few enduring islands of creamy foam. Big aroma of lemon, with a bit of cat spray, toast and grapefruit. Flavors of lemon, mildly dank herb, toasted grain, bitter citrus pith and a touch of resin. Nearly into IPA territory with a big dry lean. Light-medium mouthfeel with medium carbonation and lots of hop tingle.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2020 Pale golden pour with a thin white head, very bubbly, barely any lacing .... aroma of citrusy hops, grapefruit, orange and juicy with light pine .... taste is of grapefruit, orange, juicy and a little lively with light pine, malty backbone switching to a light bitter, fizzy bite on the back end .... sweet, juicy and citrusy finish .... sessionable and decent body

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2020 3 week old pint can A: Poured clear gold with a small but lasting head. S: Citrusy scent of lemon and grapefruit with pith and lemon cake. T: Pithy and very bitter with again, lemon and grapefruit dominant. Lemon zest joins light wood for the finish. M: Crisply carbonated, light and clean. Very refreshing. O: Very one dimensional with nothing happening but bitter citrus. Waited a long time to try this. Can't say I'm very impressed.

oobawa (3456) - Tennessee, USA - JUL 6, 2020
UPDATED: JUL 6, 2020 Surly can call it an extra pale ale, or try and sell it as an 'Americanized English-style Bitter', but what they've got is a Citra-bomb Session IPA through and through. Not a bad thing, mind you, but nothing that swerves greatly from the stylistic definition (and limitations) of a low-ABV IPA. Tons of grapefruit, lemon, and passionfruit, backed up by hits of pith and pine, with a crisp, clean finish accented by lingering citrus. I really dig the front half, wind up disappointed as the fade turns indistinct and dull. Summer-day hangin'-with-friends doin'-something-fun beer for sure, but not one I'd seek out otherwise.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2020 Light hazy tan/orange pour, quickly dissipating white head. Aroma is light and has some earthy tones, along with bright citrus, pollen, and pineapple. Average carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, really clean finish. Flavor has strong bright citrus, pollen and pineapple, along with biscuity and slightly nutty malts. Really complex for low ABV IPA. New go-to for sessioning.

NachlamSie (4178) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAR 31, 2020
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2020 6 pack from Downing Liquors. Here's a beer under the wrong category on this site. This is not an English pale ale. There's no British hop character since evidently this is all Citra and so many modern American pale ales/IPAs are using British yeast anyway. This beer is as Surly advertised though. Tons and tons of grapefruit are imparted by the generous usage of Citra. The malt body is pretty light but still noticeably bready. Bitterness is medium low for the style but still a little present. If you like this hop, this is your beer. I had no problem putting down a few of these refreshers.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2019 Can at the Ace Hotel in Chicago

Clear, pale, minimal malt character with a ton of citra up in your face. British style maybe, but swept away by the citra and so unlike anything from Britain that I've ever experienced. Good for a hop blast without enormous ibus or high ABV. But rather one-dimensional.
