We jumped at the chance to do a collaboration with our Belgian brewmaster friend Gunther Bensch, from BIIR. This one combines our fruity sense of humor with his fruit beer-brewing know-how.

Late Spring brings the first of the seasonal crop of cherries to Barcelona. So we heaped kilos of this seductive fruit into a strong Belgian beer. The result is a gorgeous balance of sweet and sour cherries. 19°

Amber-red liquid with lots of pink head. Aroma is mostly cherry. Taste is sour cherry. Alcohol well hidden, easy drinkable. Sour, rather dry, almost no bitterness. Fruit beer it is.

15/VII/17 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk), shared @ post-Billies cool-down at 77ships’ place (Antwerpen) - BB: 22/?/18 (2017-1029)

Clear deep red to ruby purple beer, pretty stable, big aery irregular off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of tannins, hoppy, bit resinous, some chlorine, more tannins. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, hoppy, lots of tannins, fruity, some cherries. Aftertaste: bitter, bit resinous, cherry, fruity, lemony, sourish, some cherry skin, vanilla notes, caramel, sourish, bitter tannins.

Alengrin (5902) - BELGIUM - JUL 19, 2017
Belgian style strong blonde ale turned into a fruit beer with cherries, bottle at 77ships’s place. Thin, light pinkish-tinged head, hazy ruby red colour with fuchsia hue. Aroma of fresh sour cherries, nectarine, grenadine, some red candy, banana, bubblegum, white bread. Sweet onset, lots of bubblegummy banana ester balanced by gently souring sour cherry flavour, bit redcurrant-like too, medium carbo, cereally maltiness with a soapy edge, wry touch of cherry peel and unripe nectarine, sweetish finish with sourish fruit balance, herbal touch with lingering bubblegum effect yet still dryish due to the sour element. Weird to combine sweet and sour cherry into one beer, as this kind of makes it fall between two concepts: not an accessible sweet fruit beer for the masses, but not a complex, tangy sour for the connoisseur either. Not sure what to think of this, but surely not my preference when it comes to modern, crafty fruit beer.

77ships (11482) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JUL 16, 2017
Thank you tderoeck! Late night tasting @ home. 330 ml. bottle sampled. Dark red off-white head, some pink. Nose is rotting fermenting massive cherry syrup. Far too carbonated but not bad thick overripe thick sweet cherry, pits, fermenting, too fizzy, fruit syrup. Not a bad fruit beer but that name!
